This was TERRIBLE
14 January 2001
I can't believe this movie got rated so high by others. 15 minutes into the movie I didn't want to keep watching it was so uninteresting. But, I stuck it out, knowing that it was acclaimed. What a mistake. It only got worse. The plot was stupid, the voices/sound were aweful, and the animation graphics (much raved about) were nothing better than a Disney movie. I really like most asian movies, and anime as well. This movie, however, really sucked. I am completely confused at its extremely high voter rating. Don't waste your time. I'm still bitter that I did.

great music

I love the Muppets (discounting that pig)- I love Jim Henson. The best thing about this movie is the soundtrack. The opening scene with the muppets getting down to "Brickhouse" is hysterical! Its all 60's and 70's funk music, and really promotes the fun and lively mood of the movie. While this is no "Great Muppet Caper", its funny and amusing. If you aren't a muppet fan, this probably won't make you one. If you already are, its a must see. The addition of Pepe to the cast is genius. He's the Cosmo Kramer of the muppets, adding tons of comic relief and spice. I would have given it an 8 if not for a cameo by a professional wrestler that almost made me walk out. Luckily, it was over shortly and quickly forgotten.

If only it were longer...

The Dark Crystal is one of the first DVDs I bought, and one of my proudest purchases. I saw this movie as a kid when it came out, and was in awe. Although a little concerned about the change in perspective in seeing it as an adult, I was even more amazed now than then. Although the plot is not incredibly deep and complex, the world that Henson created certainly is. The characters each have real personalities, even if only seen for a second in passing. I wish The Dark Crystal was four hours longer- I could watch and be enthralled by the world contained within it for a very long time without growing tired. The DVD special edition also has a wonderful making of the movie, that makes me love the characters and setting even more. It is unbelievable considering when this movie was made. I love it!

Das Boot (1981)
Nerve racking
18 April 2000
Das Boot is one of the most emotionally involving movies I have ever seen. The characters are developed richly, without those awkward moments in movies when you realize that the director is doing so. You sympathize with the crew, and FEEL their plight as they struggle, cramped in a rickety U-boat against the odds. At times the movie grows slow and drawn out, but that is intentional- to make you feel like you are trapped in an underwater coffin with nothing to do, no where to go. The directing is great, the sound is fabulous! I've never heard faint noises tell a story like this before.
