Witchblade (2000)
Major disappointment
Let's see. The Witchblade is huge undulating tendrils in the comic. Here it's a wimpy little dagger thing that looks like it's made of plastic. Oooh it's so scary, NOT. And frankly, I don't think Yancy Butler is very pretty, nice figure though. She doesn't really look like Sara. She sort of tries to act like Sara. The guy who plays Ian Nottingham talks just like Ian Nottingham would, it's too bad he's this little guy with brown hair who looks nothing like the huge assassin with long black hair. That might be excusable, but where's the katana? His clothes are all wrong too. The plot goes nowhere fast and the action scenes have no tension whatsoever. This movie is like leftovers from a forgotten Steven Seagal flick. They had a small budget and man, does it show. As an action mystery show Witchblade is cliche and predictable (totally unlike the comic), as a comic book adaptation it's a joke. What makes Witchblade, the comic book, cool, is that weird things happen to seemingly normal people and you never know quite what to expect. Due to budgetary constraints, all that was eviscerated from this version and there isn't much left. In place of eerie paranormal investigations and mortal combat, we get a predictable who-dun-it. Well I think you get the point. It was better than Generation X, but lord, it wasn't good.
New Blood (1999)
Most boring movie I ever saw, a total waste of time
So bland I barely managed to sit through it. A combination of the most dull cliches from every true-crime movie I've ever seen. Predictable plot goes nowhere verrrry slowly. Joe Pantogliano is excellent and barely recognizable. Unfortunately he barely appears in this movie. Carrie-Anne Moss is more feminine and interesting than she was in The Matrix, but she gets about 5 minutes of screen time and less than 10 lines. John Hurt is pretty good in basically the same role he always plays. His character was sort of interesting, for a while. Everything else about the film is breathtakingly average. Even the gunfights are absolutely basic, bare-bones and old hat. Don't waste your time, watch The Matrix or Blade again. And if you just want to see Carrie-Anne naked, go hunt for The Soft Kill, because you won't see that here (the one thing that could have given it SOME value).
Skyggen (1998)
The best thing since The Matrix, see it now!
One of the best cyberpunk movies ever. The story of two people trying to find each other in a shadowy underworld where computers are everywhere. Atmospheric and fascinating. The story is kind of like Strange Days, but better. The music rules. Ignore the stupid box and just rent it, you won't be disappointed. 9 out of 10.
New Rose Hotel (1998)
Very good if you like the short story.
This is basically William Gibson's story on film. It has been expanded, there is more background now, but it is very true to the original short story in the collection "Burning Chrome". Christopher Walken is very entertaining as usual. Asia Argento and Willem Dafoe are well cast. If you never read science fiction this will probably be like 6 out of 10 for you. If you really like the short story it is like 9 or 10. I am not that big a fan of it so I give the movie a 7. Definitely worth renting after you start getting tired of The Matrix.
