Ghosts of Mars (2001)
Entertaining, but bad.
This movie has no plot. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it's unusual to say the least. Nothing is resolved at the end of the movie. Literally. We leave not knowing if the 'ghosts' will be killed, if in fact there is a way to kill them at all. Will our heros ever leave the planet? Will there be a final confrontation? I guess, given the premise, these questions were too hard to answer even for John Carpenter.
Don't get me wrong. The movie itself is quite entertaining in it's "badness". I recommend it, if your theatre often features a cheap night. ;)
The Others (2001)
Genuinely Scary
I am absolutely shocked by the number of people who are claiming this movie is boring. In a world dominated by monstrously uncreative horror flicks (ala 1999's The Haunting), this is the first legitimately scary movie I've seen. I was absolutely terrified.
If you are reading this, and you haven't yet seen the movie, please stop reading all these user reviews and go see it. The only thing you need to know ahead of time is the high user rating (8.2 out of 10 as of this writing). But once again, a warning: There are some reviews posted here that will absolutely ruin the whole experience for you. Close this browser window and head to the theatre. This movie is a chilling classic.
Romeo Must Die (2000)
Very Entertaining
Firstly, this is *not* an adaptation of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. This is instead an extremely entertaining action movie with tremendous fight scenes.
Definitely one of the best movies I've seen recently.
The Ninth Gate (1999)
Excellent suspense film
I was very impressed by this film. The suspense will drive you insane right up until the end. My only complaint is that they should have ended the movie about 7 minutes earlier than they did. They just carried the story a little farther than they needed to.
I suggest that you should definitely go see it if you have the opportunity.
Mission to Mars (2000)
Excellent Middle, Terrible Ending
Unfortunately I saw this movie on opening night, so I had no one to warn me about the horrendous ending. You might actually be better off leaving the movie about 10 minutes early. That being said, the middle was actually quite enjoyable.
In fact, if you exit the theater about 10 minutes before the end of the show, you will probably be quite satisfied. Just don't stay long enough to see the golden alien with a small tear rolling down it's cheek. After that scene, it actually gets worse.
Encounter in the Third Dimension (1999)
An enjoyable documentary about the history of 3D art
This was the first 3D IMAX film I have seen, and I must say I was quite impressed. Not only were the 3D effects spectacular, but the film was quite enjoyable as well.
The roller coaster rides and underwater scenes were quite fun (it really feels like you are there!). The film itself was documentary style, but written in such a way that all ages will find it enjoyable. If it's still playing near you, it's worth seeing.
Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)
Mediocre
I'm not the type of person to give in to hype, so I can see this movie for what it really is. The story and acting are so-so, the special effects are standard, and the movie in whole was mediocre.
I did enjoy myself during various scenes, but other than that, I wouldn't rate it anywhere above the other movies I've seen this year.
The Evil Dead (1981)
A favorite
I rented this movie expecting it to be a thriller, but it ended up being one of the funniest movies I've seen in years. The unintentional humour is enough to bring tears to your eyes.
Join Ash and his friends for the ultimate cheesy/gory horror flick from the early 80's. You will not be disappointed.
