Waking Life (2001)
astonishingly unique and real
i had NO idea what to expect from this film before my friend insisted i see it- and decided i didn't want to hear anything about it. movies are better experienced that way after all, aren't they? the whole time i was awe-struck and laughing, as each sequence slowly proceeded to spell out what my friends and i had discussed at various tines, as well as many things i had though to myself but not actually said aloud to anyone. amazing, amazing movie!! i loved the photography, the "spotting" who was who, the boat-car, the "ants" scene... ever since then, i have made a point to NOT just bump into someone and not say anything, to NOT just sit next to them at the train station, but to interact with them. it's been wonderful and (i'm gushing here aren't i?;), i am encouraging everyone i know to rent this movie- VERY protective of my own copy :) go see it, for the visual pleasure alone, but more importantly, for the dialogue and ponderings about life, dreams, society, and the people we interact with or not in our everyday life.
What Makes a Family (2001)
this touched me
I don't know what words there are to say about this movie that can begin to describe how I felt while watching it. From the brilliant script to the acting done by Brooke Shields, her partner, the adorable little girl, and everyone else, I was moved in a way that no other movie I have seen has affected me. I still cannot stop crying and it ended fifteen minutes ago... everyone, especially those who are cynical of domestic partnerships and their competence as parents, should see this movie. I was so happy to hear that it was based on a true story- how wonderful!! I only wish that I could contact the real Janine, and praise and thank her for being such a role model and pioneer in a controversial area that so desperately needs widespread recognition. Kudos to Barbra Streisand, Whoopi Goldberg, Cis Corman, Brooke Shields, and everyone involved in the production of this movie for their courage and integrity.
The Contender (2000)
surprisingly engaging...
Well me and my boyfriend went to the movies a couple of weeks ago planning to see Lost Souls and of course it being opening night, it was all sold out. Enter The Contender as our second choice. what can I say.. I have a thing for those presidential/White House dramas. I'm glad we saw this instead. it was engaging, with new plot twists coming up all the time and some humorous parts as well. One of our favorite characters was that perfectly annoying but clever special FBI agent (who played her?) who knew just how to get to each person she interrogated. Joan Allen's portrayal of Senator Laine Hansen was excellent (although i can't help it.. did anyone else notice how skeleton-like she looked??) but to say right now that she will win the Oscar is a little premature. There are some instances when you see an outstanding performance and just KNOW that this person is gonna take the award, no problem- like Hilary Swank in Boys Don't Cry, Jodie Foster in Silence of the Lambs, etc. a nomination, sure.. and perhaps some others in the great cast of this movie will be honored.. i hope!! i liked Jeff Bridges as the president- although Michael Douglas' Andrew Shepherd (The American President) will always have a special place in my heart :) ooh now i can't wait to see some other great performances looking for Academy nominations...
