Miami Vice (1984)
Vice is back
After much thought and years of watching all the seasons, I am gonna go against the grain and say that Season 3 is the best of the 5. I liked the darker atmosphere (in plot, music, lighting, clothing and tone). A favorite of mine is"Shadow in the Dark", where Crockett starts to lose it while tracking down a serial killer. Next in line would be season 2, Vice had really found what works from Season one and went with it full throttle. Season one would be third. I don't hate season 4 and 5 as much as everyone else, but it is the season that jumped the shark with Crocketts amnesia...and Tubb's beard, hated that beard. I quite enjoyed the episode "Death and the Lady". Another reviewer thought it was the worst ep ever, but I enjoyed the dark tone and the guest actors were top notch, plus they played not one but TWO Depeche Mode songs (my fave band)!!!! Season 5 is the season that I have seen the least. I need to go back and watch that again. I didn't like how Sonny started wearing jeans and a leather jacket, however that is how Don Johnson initially wanted to portray Crockett when he was cast in 84. It was symbolic though of Crocketts deteriorating state of mind. Also, the tone changed drastically with a new composer for the music, Tim Truman. Not bad, just different.
Coming soon is the film version of Miami Vice with Colin Farrell as Crockett and Jamie Foxx as Tubbs. Bad casting. A great choice for Crocket would be Josh Holloway who plays the bad boy on the island in the new show "Lost". Although, I really would prefer that they keep the original cast, make it 20 years later and just add in a few new characters (and use todays stars). But since they are not doing that, I am curious to see who gets the supporting roles.
Bring on Seasons 2-5 on DVD (with original music) ASAP!!!!
Last Night at Eddie's (1997)
Long Live Tubesteak Charlie
I saw this little Indie in the theaters back in 1997 and was quite impressed actually. Not as bad as one might think. Some surprisingly funny and clever dialogue and some hilarious performances from the supporting cast. Paul K. Bisson as Tubesteak is a holler. Check it out for his performance alone. I hear they have edited much of the in the stock room sex scenes for the official online/video release. Luckily I have the unedited 1997 version. Enjoy!!!
The Battle of Shaker Heights (2003)
Cute, lighthearted fun.
I am not a hard person to please. I enjoy most films to be honest with you. I know a horrible film, and I know a miserable failure. This film is getting to much flick. It was a quick, fun, light hearted, smile inducing film that passed by quicker than intended, but pleases. Many laugh out loud moments, a star making performance by Shia Lebouf, and smart, quickly paced direction. Under the circumstances, limited budget, no time at all for post or pre production, 2 novice directors, a novice writer, a camera crew in your face, and many conflicting ideas, they made a brilliant film. I applaud them.
I was a fan of the show, never missed an episode. And throughout it, I was always routing for the directors. They were passive aggressive, Efram has a giant ego, but they put heart and soul into it and were aiming to please. And hell, they were scared under the pressure. I am a film maker and an actor, and I know how difficult this business is, and in the end, after all the fighting and questions, they have all made a film to be proud of. I hope they all continue to work.
