America's Sweethearts (2001)
tip - take your sense of humour with you
I'm amazed at all the low scores and negative remarks for this movie. If you don't go in expecting Greek tragedy you should be ok: see this! I found the humour absolutely spot on and nigh on continuous.
There are plenty of guides to the plot already here, but look out for the other movie take-offs, especially in the first 5 minutes.
The Man in the Iron Mask (1998)
how do they do that?
Firstly, there are a lot of comments about foreign accents and anachronism and the like, and I'd like to say to those people - this is an adventure story! a damn good yarn! chill out!
However .. don't know why but this movie takes all the ingredients you could possibly require for a Great, fun film and turns them into a Great disappointment. I'd have sent it back to the editors.. the timing is terrible, in the action scenes particularly. Go see this on a rainy day with very low expectations and maybe it'll be ok? I give it a four for taking a book which I had to read from cover to cover in two sittings and some of my favourite actors and letting them all down!
The Story of Us (1999)
Go, with low expectations..
This film held several firsts for me: the first Rob Reiner movie I was disappointed with, the first Michelle Pfeiffer movie I was disappointed with, and the best performance I remember seeing from Bruce Willis- this is his show. I read the rave review on the imdb film page and had high hopes, given also the director and actors.. and felt a little cheated at the end. Also surprised at the repetitive, rather dull music. Hard to avoid comparisons with Harry & Sally and You've Got Mail, and while Story of Us attempts to go, perhaps, a little deeper, it's simply less convincing. Funny and truthful moments and star turn from Willis make this worth seeing.. only don't expect too much.
Plunkett & Macleane (1999)
don't get your hopes up...
... because while I thoroughly enjoyed this film, it seems from other user comments that I'm in the minority. Maybe not one for the philosopher (eek), there are some wonderful scenes here (- particularly the techno), and the great life adventure story originally portrayed. Go see for yourself!
