Trapped in Paradise (1994)
What a disappointment.
I saw the beginning of this movie in Consumer Foundation class, where the teacher showed us some tragic sad type movie every other day. On the last day, she said she had a suprise for us. She said that we were going to watch a movie that had nothing but laughs in it. I was excited, I love comedies. At first it seemed very promising. I read the opening credits in my mind with joy. One of my favorite actors, Nic Cage had the lead role. Then, my favorite comedian, Dana Carvey's name appeared. Jon Lovitz, who is funny at times, also had a leading role. The first scene was watchable, with Nic Cage. Then the movie went completly down hill. I kept waiting and waiting for it to end, finally I jut decided to doze off. When I woke up at the end of class, I asked a friend if I missed anything good. "Nope", he said, "My favorite parts were when the teacher fast forwarded through the parts that were not as important as the rest so we could see it all." I did not know whether to believe him or not. I guess I was still in denial that both Nic Cage and Dana Carvey could accept roles in a movie that bad. A couple days later the movie appeared on Comedy Central. I decided to watch what I missed. My friend was right, it is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. I have lost plenty of respect for my teacher's tastes, too. My overall rating 1/2 star out of 4.
Two of Us (2000)
Surprisingly good!
I still wonder why I watched this movie. Admittedly, before I viewed this film, I knew practicly nothing about the beatles. I didn't even know all their names! All I knew was that they had a ton of fans, they had some albums that some people claim to be the greatest ever, they broke up, John married Yoko Ono, and John was murdered.
Also, VH1 isn't even my favorite music station, MTV is. Still, for some reason or another I decided to watch it, not expecting much. Surprisingly, I enjoyed it very much! The dialogue was written and handled very well with the occasion of a slight accent mess up. This is very important, because John and Paul talking is pretty much the whole film, allthough they are taken outside to explore more possibilities, and to keep you watching. Jared Harris and Adien Quinn give good performaces, overall.
The ending was also very smart. I enjoyed how the movie gets you excited about the SNL performace, and then slaps you over the head and makes you realize that it would be better if they just let it go, and end it on a good note. My favorite moment is probably the touching rooftop scene.
Overall, I recommend this film to almost everyone. It is a very good way of settling your curiosity of what could have happened if 6 years after the break up Paul just showed up on John's doorstep. Which is probably the main reason of my viewing this film, settling my curiosity on who the beatles really were and what could have happened to them after the breakup.
Celebrity Deathmatch (1998)
One of the best shows on television!
This show is great! Clay celebs beating the crap out of each other doesn't sound too intelligent, but I think 75% of this shows jokes are genius! In fact, pretty much all the gags will have you laughing yourself to death. The fights are smart, although they always jab at the celebs movies, it's funny, and it never fails to find a new way to write off one of your favorite (or least favorite) celebrities.
Overall: A laugh out loud, smart, and incredibly entertaining show! 9.5/10
Pulp Fiction (1994)
Although it had some competition, "Pulp Fiction" is my choice for best film of the 90's!
Although it had some competition "Pulp Fiction" is my choice for best film of the 90's! "Forrest Gump", "GoodFellas", and "Fargo", all came close, but none measure up to this Tarantino classic. Everything in this movie is as good as it gets. The screenplay is amazing, winning "Pulp" it's ONLY acadamy award of 1994. Most all of the awards it should have won were stolen away by one of my earlier mentioned, honorable mentions for best 90's film "Forrest Gump" which truly is a classic, but isn't on the level of "Pulp". Overall, the script is marvoulsly written and put together by Tarantino and Avary.
The acting spawned numerous acadamy award nominations, but suprisingly didn't win any. Samuel L. Jackson definetly gives a worthy performance as the bible quoting, "N" word saying hit man Jules that changes his thoughts about his career after what he calls a divine intervention. John Travalto proves he truly is the comeback kid also earning a nomination for his Elvis-Man,Vicent, type hitman who gets blown away in the bathroom, but still appears in the end of the film, because of how the script is written. (For some reason Tarantino makes all of his characters in all of his movies wind up in the bathroom to create interesting situations. Roth and Bushemi in "Dogs". Jackson, Thurman, and Travolta in "Pulp", and, well, I don't remember one in "Jackie Brown". Oh Well, No Matter.) Bruce Willis is particularly fun and powerful as Butch in the seen where he stumbles into the wrong store at the wrong time. Along side him is Ving Rhames in an equally powerful performance as Marcellus Wallace. Uma Thurman plays Mia, Mea, however you spell it, the wife of Marcellas, who, when unable to handle a hit,is ran around all over every where, leading up to a highly intense adrenaline shot seen. Christopher Walken makes a funny cameo, Harvey Kietel does, too. Even Tarantino himself makes a cameo as Jimmy. All in all, all the suprising twists and turns, and breathtaking action/violence make "Pulp Fiction an instant classic!
