Al-massir (1997)
A great film with many facettes
A film which will probably find many emphatic spectators due to its many facettes: * You might like historic films - this one shows you live of Andalusia in the 12th century with rich costumes and great islamic buildings; * you might prefer deep content - this film offers insight in the philosophy of the great muslem thinker Averroes (Ibn-Rushed) and the question why people get seducted by sects; * you might be interested in action, love and happy-end - this film offers as a story the conspiracy against the caliph, and happily ends with two couples that found each other (though very sensitively shown, compared to occidental films); * you might generally be interested how other cultures do films - this is a great example of oriental (Egyptian) cinema, which is close enough to be understood be occidental people; * you might like to follow personal development of the characters shown in the film - this one gives you insight in the development of the caliph's two sons: from "take all easy" to "use your own head to think". *** This film can be highly recommended !!! ***
You've Got Mail (1998)
Easy film, no thinking necessary
This is one of the "low-content" American films, type "nice girl is meeting nice guy": you go to see it and from the very beginning you know how it's going to end. By using e-mail as a new form of getting to know people, the film profits of the publicity Internet currently gets. This is probably the only "new" idea of the whole film.
The whole film is OK, however, if you want to spend 1,5 h thinking about nothing.
La leggenda del pianista sull'oceano (1998)
Great scenes, great music, unfourtunately not much publicity
This film is piece of art considering the camera scenes you see, the music you hear. The dialogues give an insight into the life of a man with limited area of living and the philosophy he derives from this. Though this physically limited, the thoughts of the man reach every part of the world and add lots of phantasy to his music.
The film is a romance, a drama and phycologic insight all at a time. The legend is carefully embedded in the frame story of one of the main actors - and there is no boring moment from the beginning till the very end.
This film is NOT recommendable for people that prefer the style of "sex, crime and happy-end". There is none of this.
