Nunta de piatra (1973)
excellent soundtrack
Stone Wedding (Nunta de piatra) is made of two distinct segments directed by two different directors. The first part (M. Veroiu) depicts the miserable life of a widow in Romania at the beginning of the century. The second part (D. Pita) is about a bride that on the day of her wedding runs away with a singer in the wedding band. It can be very funny from time to time. The best part of both movies is the soundtrack by Dorin Liviu Zaharia, Dan Andrei Aldea and Sfinx.
Het dak van de walvis (1982)
difficult to understand without appropriate background
I found this movie very difficult to watch and understand. Try to watch it together with someone who has enough background on the history and politics of South America, so that they can explain it to you. Otherwise, it will just be an interesting but weird movie.
Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai (1999)
Better than I expected. And I expected a lot from this movie!
This movie is just splendid. I knew, even before watching it, that I would like it a lot. First of all, I was told that it's about a hitman and about his philosophy of life. That aroused my curiosity. Then, I was told that there are two types of comments that viewers make after seeing the movie. Some of them say this is not the fast-paced action movie that they expected. Others say that it's not exactly the typical Jarmush movie because it has too much action. This apparent contradiction made me even more sure that I'll like the film. Finally, I watched it. It is even better than I expected!
Tito i ja (1992)
not too deep, but very funny
"Tito and I" is a very entertaining comedy. Although it touches on some serious issues such as political indoctrination and idolatry of communist leaders, I think the main point of the movie is not to make us think about these serious issues, but to laugh at them. Indeed, the movie gives the viewer plenty of reasons to be amused. It will be difficult not to enjoy it, trust me!
The cast includes two actors the I've seen in other Yugoslav movies: Miki Manojlovic (Underground and Black cat, white cat) and Lazar Ristovski (Underground)
Have fun!
Fantasia (1940)
combined beauty of sound and image
Great movie for classical music lovers. Great movie for anyone who appreciates the combined beauty of sound and image. All seven segments are wonderful. To tell the truth, I was a little disappointed in the segment about the pre-historical Earth. I don't know exactly why.. maybe it was because I have a different (more scientific?) view about those ages. Again, seeing a movie that is almost 60 years old, makes me wonder how much beautiful movies that could to back then.. in the 30's and 40's (I'm also thinking about "Tabu", a great silent movie from 1931)
The Shining (1980)
good movie - too bad it's horror
I generally don't like horror movies, but this one is not too bad. It's of course Kubrik's merit. (Kubrik is also the director of Clockwork Orange - you have to see this one). I did not enjoy the movie, because of the horror scenes, but the artistic part of it is really good.
Solyaris (1972)
be sure you know what you are wishing for..!
This is one of those great slow-paced movies by Tarkovsky. The fact that it's based on a great sci-fi novel by Stanislav Lem makes it even better.
It's not a very complex movie, but it's still worth seeing it. It has some interesting philosophic ideas. And some nice nature/landscape footing.
Be sure you know exactly what your wishes are. You might have a surprise!
Historie milosne (1997)
a definite 9
A movie about taking decisions in life, about love and >duty, about love and professional accomplishments. Stuhr is very successful in combining romance/drama with good humor. And you don't have to be Polish to like or understand this movie. It is addressed to everyone.
Nostalghia (1983)
great movie
Definitely worth seeing. However, you might feel a little depressed after watching it. The water is omnipresent in this movie. There are almost always water drops falling and making the characteristic sound. The final scene with the candle and the water basin is one of the best I've ever seen.
Incubus (1966)
funny
The fight between good and evil is the central idea of the movie. They say it's Fantasy/Horror, but I think the Horror part is not quite obvious (remember, the movie was made in 1965). Actually, there is a scene in which the role terrible monster is played by a live animal, something like a big goat. The 'horror' scene is quite amusing for somebody who has seen what special effects can do at the end of the century. Try to watch the movie with a large number of people, it's more fun.
