Alienator (1990)
Revenge of the large transvestite with a gun
Well, I had to be generous and give this a 2. This was mainly due to the gratuitous holes cut in that lady's shirt where her breasts are. I found that mildly amusing. Other than that, this movie does nothing more than provide a few good laughs with a friend. Funny if you're willing to throw "mystery science theatre" comments at it with someone, but it ain't no better than a 2. And a 2 pretty much sucks.
The Sixth Sense (1999)
Man, it wasn't THAT good. . .
21st best movie ever???????? (that deserves more question marks but I'm too lazy) Okay, fine, it was good, the acting was pretty good, nothing fantastic from Bruce Willis though (although I felt intimated by the kid's acting abilities which are far superior to my own). And yes, the story was OKAY, nothing new, and it was freeky at times. A good solid 7 on ten (which is being generous), but 21st best movie ever???????????? Movies have been in the business for more than 100 years now and this is one of the best flics we've got to show for it? I don't think so.
Now I liked it and I'm not saying I didn't, but in the past century, there have been more than 20 classics that were better than this film. It's good though and worth the money, just not that good.
The Iron Giant (1999)
Definitely a solid animation
The Iron Giant boasts great animation, which incorporates both 2-D and flattened 3-D animation. The story is good, the setting and characters are interesting as well, and yes there are no songs, which is a daring move, but opens this one up to older audiences as well. I really enjoyed this film from start to end and frankly, I can't see why anyone wouldn't.
The Punisher (1989)
4.5/10?????
How can this movie have gotten such a low average?? This is one of the greatest action flics of all time. Sure it's cheesy, but this movie is also just plain fun. Besides, The Punisher was the best Marvel super-hero ever made, and this movie does the comic books justice. Yes, the acting ain't phenomenal, but when action movies were this good, acting wasn't needed. If you're looking to rent a stupid late-80s action, look no further.
Shakespeare in Love (1998)
Can you say. . . Hollywood?
I'm not going to break this down like the last guy did on a profound literary level, I'm simply going to give you my reactions to this film which unfortunatly has been so over-hyped in my ears. When I rented it last night, I forced myself to block out all the "It's a great film" comments I've heard from family and friends and made an attempt to simply enjoy it as a film (despite the Oscars as well). When I sat down to watch it, I found only Hollywood's interpretation of a love story, dressed with Hollywood make-up, and Hollywood music, all of which blowing this story far out of proportion.
Now don't get me wrong, Hollywood has produced many fine films, but Shakespeare in Love is simply too much of a motion-picture story, and not a real, story. It isn't a story that anyone can identify with on a personal level and that is what makes it hard to feel for the characters. It just so happens that I also saw the film "October Sky" yesterday, and although these two films can not be easily contrasted, October Sky tells a truly interesting story, without all the Hollywood dress-up. I'm not comparing these two, I'm simply saying that there are some good, simple stories out there, and then are large blow-out stories, solely aimed at winning the Oscar.
Bowfinger (1999)
Good ol' Steve Martin
This movie brings out the best in both Steve martin and Eddie Murphy (who's been selling out for the last couple of years and forgetting his own crude sense of humour seen on SNL years ago). The idea's new and it's written by one of the best comedians of all time. The cast is solid, but you might not find yourself laughing continuously through the whole movie. Basically, better than most of the "comedies" released this summer.
Star Trek: First Contact (1996)
Best movie of all time!!!!!
If I could give this a 20 on 10 I would. This movie kicks ass! It's far better than any other Star Trek movie, it has the Borg, it has Worf, it has sweet FX, and Zero G combat. This isn't missing anything. Besides, the scene where Picard tells Lillie "The line must be drawn here, this far, no farther!!!! And I will make them pay for what they've done!" is the coolest scene in movie history, period.
The Return of Swamp Thing (1989)
mmmmmm...... swamp thing.....
I was flipping the channels and came across a scene of this big green guy beating the living crap out of a bunch of guys with a baseball bat! I mean come on, what more does a movie need??? All right, fine, it sucked. But the baseball bat scene is great.
