The Captains (2011)
Could have been a lot better.
I love Star Trek and have seen every episode ever made, most of them more than once. I found the pacing of this documentary to be very slow. The music just didn't do it for me either. Most of the questions that were asked seemed irrelevant. There were some questions that were asked which I really wanted to hear more about, but both Shatner and the rest seemed to dance around the answers. For example, about life-after- death.
The absolute worst scenes were those with Avery Brooks. Has he lost his mind? I've never heard somebody speak so many different words without actually saying anything. I did not enjoy listening to him or Shatner sing next to the piano.
I was also disappointed that there were not more guest stars. They did show Robert Picardo and Johnathan Frakes but just for a few lines. They deserved more screen time. I'd rather have listened more to them than to Avery Brooks babbling.
I did gather some insight into the grueling labor that was involved in shooting the series. I do give the documentary credit for explaining that.
Doctor Who: Rise of the Cybermen (2006)
Mostly good. But a few complaints
I really liked the alternate universe. I don't think Doctor Who has ever ventured into this before. However, I didn't care for the "blowing on a crystal" to bring the tardis back to life. I'd have preferred another method. I also don't care for the way the cybermen sound when the talk. I always had trouble understanding the ones in the classic series and these are even more difficult to hear. They should be more clear when they speak.
It is interesting to see Roger Lloyd-Pack and David Tennant in the same movie together again.. (They played Barty Crouch and Barty Crouch Junior in Harry Potter) I have awoken to the fact that Noel Clark can act. I always wondered if it was the character I didn't like or the actor. Now I know it is the character, since I get to see Noel playing Ricky Smith, Mickey's alter-ego.
I remember thinking about 15 minutes into the episode that this was really interesting and suspenseful. So I had wished it didn't have to be cramming into 45 minutes. Well, I got my wish as it was "to be continued" Even though I hate having to wait for the next episode. At least they don't do like Star Trek and have a season cliff-hanger that leaves you waiting a year to find out what happens. I only have to wait a week.
Again we get to see Rose's parents fighting. We saw that in Father's Day. It was obvious in both occasions that Jackie was the main person at fault. Pete seems a lot more like he is always on the defensive, while Jackie is yelling at him. She thought he was incompetent as a door-to-door salesman 20 years before in our universe, and in this universe he is a billionaire and she still thinks he is incompetent. You just can't please some women.
One thing that bothered me was the obvious fact that this universe was more or less like ours. It must have been exactly like ours up until approx. 20 years before, when some things started to go a different course. Yet in this 20 years we have some technology that can't possibly have been developed, like the things in the ears that seem to control people's brains. But I keep waiting to see in the next episode if maybe that is from some alien influence we haven't discovered yet.. After all, Cybermen weren't supposed to be a creation of humans, I don't think.
Over all... very good.
Doctor Who (2005)
We thought it sucked at first.. but now we love it.
Since it isn't on air here in Dallas, my friends and I finally found some downloads on the internet. We watched Rose and were all very disappointed. I mean the episode had little plot, little character development, and the plot it did have seems to have been wrapped up in 5 minutes time at the end. We feared the doctor who we loved as kids was truly gone forever.
A couple of months later a friend of mine downloaded "Dalek." I was skeptical but watched it. Wow! It was one of the best episodes ever and I quickly called all of the rest of my friends to tell them that Doctor Who is still good, just the first episode kind of wasn't. Since then we've watched all of them that have aired (up to Father's Day) and I think only two episodes sucked, which were Rose and Unquiet dead. Which means 2 out of 8 being bad, isn't that bad for modern television. Most shows have a much higher suck ratio. I mean, every show has bad episodes, even the original Doctor Who. Most of the whole season 25 and 26 of the original one sucked. So this is good. I'm very disappointed to hear that Christopher won't be returning for season two. I'm very excited to see the coming episodes and so are all of my whovian friends.
At this point I'm trying to decide between Father's Day or Dalek as being my favorite episode.
Wing Commander (1999)
A lot better than people give it credit
This movie is better than most people give it credit. I think too many people are expecting it to be just like the game. Secondly everybody likes to nag on its visual effects. Personally, I think visual effects compliment a movie, they don't make the movie. This was a low budget film and the effects are great considering. (The Kilrathi look like plastic action figures, but otherwise..) If you can sit and watch Dr. Who, Red Dwarf, or Hitchhiker's Guide and enjoy it despite the terrible effects, you are the type of person who can enjoy Wing Commander. Also, the movie is best if you aren't really all that familiar with the game.
They should have taken this concept and called it something unrelated to Wing Commander and made it a different movie with the same actors. It might have gone over better. Nevertheless, I have the DVD and saw it in the cinema and it is no Star Wars, but certainly deserves better credit.
Wrongfully Accused (1998)
This movie stinks compared to Naked Gun series
I made the mistake of buying this movie thinking it would be similar to the Naked Gun series since it has the same actor. Yes, it is a similar movie but the jokes are boring and not funny. I lost track of what was going on several times in the movie. Partly because I was confused and partly because I got bored. There were definitely some funny parts that made me laugh but if you have to watch a full length comedy movie for about 4 minutes of funny parts what is the point?
Lost in Space (1998)
Great movie for some, not for others.
Seems there are a lot of people who like this movie, and a lot who hate it. I love it, personally. I will admit that I do like the first 60 minutes the best, and the ending gets a little dull for some reason. I don't normally watch movies for their visual effects, but I really love the visual effects in this movie (except for Blarb) and I also love the storyline of how they get lost to begin with.. I like the performances of most of the characters, especially Professor Robinson, and Penny Robinson.
I've found that most people who like this movie weren't fans of the original series and vice-versa. I never saw the original show, so maybe that is why I like the movie.
Armageddon (1998)
Very unrealistic
Sometimes I can't enjoy movies like this because they are so unrealistic that they become unenjoyable.
If you want to see a movie about a bunch of silly morons trying to save the world with a high film budget, see Armageddon. If you want to see a movie about what might really happen on earth if a comet was headed this way, see Deep Impact.
Just a few problems (of the tons) I have to point out are: 1) It takes 2 to 3 days to reach the moon, not minutes. 2) When creating gravity in space by spinning an object, the forces are outward!!! 3) The US government does dumb things, but would never be dumb enough to send these morons into space. 4) If there is almost no gravity, what holds the drills down so that they can be pressed into the ground? There are a few for you, believe me there are more.
