The Krofft Supershow (1976)
Ahh Yes...Those Were The Days!
My fascination with Sid And Marty Krofft go back to when I was just 3 years old(1976).I was born and raised in Atlanta during the time that Sid and Marty took up space inside the now defunct Omni center(Now CNN Center).Their theme attraction was"The World Of Sid And Marty Krofft".During part of the opening sequence you can see the city where I grew up and became a man during its funkiest period in time. The highway that Captain Kool and The Kongs are leading the kids down is the off/on ramp from I-78/85 that leads to the Presidential Parkway(Jimmy Carter). It was probably chosen since it is one of the best spots to see the main skyscrapers. The last part shows the band performing inside the Omni on the main floor level. It was a fun time to grow up and it was during a time when people(meaning parents) where not overly sensitive.Kids were allowed to think for themselves vs being spoon fed what they should or should not like. Also TV was way less retarded.True,The glam rock look dates this program quite a bit but it was relevant during the times. The Vietnam war was one year over,Gerald Ford was president(defeated by Jimmy Carter in 77),kid cereal could rot your teeth if not carefull and cars were large flotation devices on for wheels(my parents had a 66 ford galaxie and 74 pontiac catalina.Given a chance ,I would like to see that time period again if just to remember more of what I saw at 3 years old.
Villa Alegre (1973)
Fond Rememberance
For about 20 years no one I talked to could tell me the name of this spanish show that came on PBS untill I posted the question at The Toonarific Archive.Within a day ,a fellow user gave me a link to Yesterdayland that told about the show and how it was railroaded off the air by THE CHILDRENS TELEVISION WORK SHOP OF ALL COMPANIES!! Turns out, they didnt want ANY competition for the spanish speaking public so they sought to have their funding removed.Eventually they won in 1980 and the show was cancelled. There was also some bickering as to which of the spanish speaking comunities would have the greatest influence(Cuban,Mexican,S.American,Spanish,).It really bothered me to hear about the troubles behind the scenes that the show had.Shame on you Big Bird!
Drumline (2002)
Brings Back Good Memories
Anyone who will attempt to critique this movie as a MOVIE needs their head examined cause its not that kind of film folks. This is basicly a thinly(and i do say thinly) disguised hourplus show down of how many black college bands do their thing during halftime at the football game.No one actually comes to see the game. Its the halftime show everyones waiting to see.As a former High School band sax player at Northside(North Atlanta) High,we always looked up to the local and out of state college bands for inspiration like Jackson State,FamU, TSU and many others. The movie plot was just thrown in their to get it classified as a film a bit more entertaining that the old fashioned style documentary. So if you come to see this film to see the bands shake their thang, you are in the right place. If you came to pick it apart as a film, you have just wasted your money. I was also pleased to see a couple of my friends from high school involved in the film Mr Aaron Bentley And Mr Miguel Gaetan. So,to all uptight in the rearend folks .STAY AWAY and to all the FUNKY PEOPLE check this out folks.
Chain Reaction (1996)
enjoyable
After viewing this film on homevideo,i decided for myself that this fugitive style film was worth adding into my personal collection of fun films. All action nuts should get a kick out of chain reaction mainly because this is what the film was made for and not to be correct in all of what goes on.Keanu reaves is a student machinist at a chicago university who is working with a genius of a professor that is finding a way to extract energy from plain water thru process of hydrogen.Keanu finds the frequency that makes the process work by mistake one night at home. After having a small celebration back at the university,he escorts his tipsy assistant Rachel Weise back to her apartment, but like the gentleman he is,he dosent take advantage of her and puts her to bed.Once he returns back to the building where the experiments were conducted,he finds utter chaos with the professor dead(suffocated) and the hydrogen machine going haywire. He finds a explosive device ready to go off at any minute,so keanu bolts away and heads for his motocycle. After only getting a few miles away, the bomb is detonated and takes out five city blocks in the process.Naturally, since he was the last one at the scene,Keanu is the prime suspect in the sabotage case. His only allies are now Rachel Weise and the mysterious business man portrayed by Morgan Freeman who no one can figure out which side he is really on Purist and filmstudents could pick this film apart as they usually do by noting a few continuity glitches and questioning how keanu could survive the explosion that took out five city blocks, but if he were to perish then and there folks, there could be no further development and the film ends there.Keep in mind this was made for the action buff and you wont mind the few glitches that occur in this film which i deem quite enjoyable by all but the picky few who dont really watch films for enjoyment and escapism.
