Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023)
Can a CGI raccoon get a best actor Oscar?
First of all I want to give a huge shoutout to Bradley Cooper and his big voice acting scene that made me WEEP and haunted me for the rest of the film. It was honestly some of the best acting I've ever experienced from anyone-ever.
The film as a whole has some issues but I enjoyed it very much and want to see it again. What we see of Adam Warlock was entertaining and I can't comment on what others have said as I've not read any of the comics, but in the context of the film I thought he was fine. The villain is arguably the most crazed evil villain of all, played to perfection.
The ending gave me mixed emotions but I understand why they did it that way. I appreciate the acting and emotional scenes of this film and thought it was well-done with MUCH less clunky dialogue than Thor: Love & Thunder.
Disenchantment (2018)
Matt's Sleeper Show
I love all of Matt's shows and this is possibly his best work yet. I agree it might not be for everyone, but it really speaks to me personally. Not only do I find it funny, it's also dark and tragic. Bean is a young feisty and intelligent girl who is tired of being treated like crap and she's had enough. She is like Leela in that way but Bean also has young innocence and selflessness, she has risked it all for her friends more than once without hesitation. Futurama always had a special place in my heart and it always will, but I love pretty much everything about this show. The main trio-Bean, Elfo, and Luci-are very lovable and they have great chemistry. The narrative doesn't shy away from the fact these are all flawed people but it also shows their good qualities. Even the secondary characters are memorable and enjoyable, from Oona and Derek to Leavo and Pig Merkimer to Old Man Touchy and Jerry. Futurama made us all cry over Seymour but Bean's heart to heart with her dad near the end of Season 3 made me *sob*... I think a lot of the negative reviews just haven't bonded with the characters and don't care enough to try. I can't fathom my life without this show now, I'm SO glad I gave it a shot!
Babylon 5: The Lost Tales (2007)
Better than I expected!
The second part I really enjoyed. I love the "chatty" think pieces like this, one of my favorite episodes of Babylon 5 is the one with just Sheridan and his interrogator ("Intersections in Real Time"). Bruce and Peter carry this 2nd part effortlessly, and I enjoyed their acting + their characters' banter.
Sheridan's choice in the end was a hard choice but was honestly the most Sheridan choice ever and not very surprising-but it was satisfying. I'm a huge fan of compassion winning in the end, proving to be the life-changing element needed in one's life to be better instead of death = the easy way out of problems.
The Island of Dr. Moreau (1996)
Not as terrible as it could have been...
I remember watching this film in dreamlike states a couple times on TV in the late 90's as a teenager and I didn't really "like" it but there was just something so strange about it, some underlying aura that made me keep watching.
To me David looked like he could unravel into an anxiety attack at any moment, my heart ached for him somehow. Val Kilmer (in the middle of his divorce) looked like he wanted to kill everyone there and then himself, and Brando was the beyond creepy crazy weirdo that they wanted to be 1000 miles away from. It was so bizarre... the tone of the movie from the actors *in* it was just as unsettling as the story. I don't get why they couldn't just fire Kilmer if he was causing most of the trouble, but it seems like the studio made him stay or made the team "work it out" or both.
I graduated from film school years ago and this nightmare of a production is one example why I'm not pursuing that career any longer. I have the utmost respect for directors and writers and crew members to go through the suffering they do. Congrats to everyone who got this film made-it's an absolute miracle.
Green Book (2018)
Go see this now!
I was pleasantly surprised by this film... and I cried. I already knew both these actors are very talented but holy WOW they blew me away in this. Their chemistry is so good and I hope they both win their Oscars. I really hated Viggo's character Tony at first but he redeemed himself by the end, and what a positive message to send: fight hate and prejudice with love and loyalty. Tony became loyal to this man because of experiences he never realized could affect him. His face when he hears Doc play for the first time... priceless. He decides to respect his friend's humanity first and foremost because we ALL have a choice to be decent human beings. It's a really wonderful change for anyone to make. I can't wait to purchase this movie and watch it again!
The Village (2004)
M. Knight Shyamalan's Best Film
Many have failed to understand the brilliance and true twists of this film and why they are significant-much more significant than any presence of monsters.
The acting from Howard and Phoenix is exquisite, their characters are both courageous and compassionate and are a real delight. We never find out what his "color" is, the way she sees him, but I can only imagine it is bright gold like his soul or a piercing green like his eyes. The other standout is Brody. Neither a villain nor a hero, we sympathize and demonize equally, he is a very tragic character.
The usage of color, slow-motion, and music is amazing. While many critics panned this film, it really spoke to me in many ways and don't want this to deter potential viewers... there is nothing quite like this film you have ever seen before or will again. Despite its flaws it is unique and deserves to be seen. Give it a shot!
Kung Pow: Enter the Fist (2002)
Surprisingly very funny!
I went to this movie because my friends were obsessing over it, and because...I was the driver. From the very beginning, I soon found out that this movie was going to surprise me. You have to like Steve Odekerk's humor to like this movie. If you liked Thumb Wars, you will love this. I had tears streaming down my face during a certain "face in the clouds" scene. Give this movie a chance if you like very, very wrong parodies. My grade: 8/10 for the humor.
Great Performances: Swan Lake (1998)
One word. Wow.
This is truly a masterpiece. I remember the EXACT day the first and only time (so far) I ever saw this beautiful thing. It was June 4th, 1998....I had just gotten back from summer theater practice and my mother was having a Candlelite party. I'm not an extremely sociable person, so I took to my room, turned on the TV, and started flipping through the channels. Then I heard some familiar music on the PBS channel and so I stopped and watched. It was Swan Lake...and I must say...a very different Swan Lake. I was only 16 when I saw it...and I begged my PBS station to play it again for me--and I NEVER do that. Trust me. You'll like it too.
The first second I started watching it, I was mesmerized. I wanted to turn it because it was kinda weird...but I just couldn't. It was Tchaikovsky--the best composer ever...and I'm his #1 fan...so I just had to keep watching. I'm VERY glad I did. The Swan and the Prince...they're not gay, folks...it's something very different that I just can't explain. Boyhood tenderness? An old friend who was loved too much? Call it what you will. The dancing was gorgeous...every song was choreographed with beauty and passion and how I feel Tchaikovsky would have wanted it. THIS version of Swan Lake is what Tchaikovsky wanted but could never make because of the "honorable" status one had to uphold in the 19th century...because Tchaikovsky himself was homosexual--a "bad" thing.
If you're into modernized classics, wonderful stories, beautiful dancers/dancing, gorgeous music, and weepy finales, this is for you. To all the guys who hate this mushy stuff: I REALLY think you might like Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake. It's definitely not your typical ballet.
The Shining (1997)
A very good adaptation
Hey, I know I'll get lots of hateful replies after I say this, but I don't care. This mini-series was at LEAST twice as good as the Jack Nicholson film. It is so much closer to the real novel, and is not only scary, but makes you cry and cry and cry at the end (at least I did). Good acting also, especially by Steven Weber and the other principals. I can't really say anything more except I really liked it. My mom is an avid Stephen King lover/reader and she loved it also. So if you have 5 hours free, you should go rent it and watch this great story thrill, sadden, and suspend you.
