Reviews
The Love Letter (1998)
A believable fantasy love story.
A good almost believable story, with excellent sets particularly the Civil War section. First rate acting, especially from the ever-wonderful Jennifer Jason Leigh.
The end though not unexpected was very satisfactory, a very enjoyable 90 minutes or so.
Riders of the Purple Sage (1996)
Harris and Madigan are superb as usual
The best version based on Zane Gray's novel, in fact it surpasses the book, Amy Madigan and real life husband Ed Harris perform well together. A good feel of the true west and some of the religious fanatics and bigots that lived then. I think in some respects it was similar to Clint Eastwood's "Unforgiven" and in passing "Pale Rider"
Merlin (1998)
This production was a feast for the eye, and a treat for the heart.
Good performances from Sam Neill, Rutger Hauer, an excellent Martin Short, and a wonderful over-the-top performance from Miranda Richardson. In many respects this film mirrors John Boorman's classic 1981 film Excalibur. In the end this was enjoyable three hours of escapism.
Some Kind of Wonderful (1987)
This film introduced me to the wonderful Mary Stuart Masterson, and I have been a fan ever since.
I thought the film had a well constructed story-line, with a set of first-rate young actors, notably Mary Stuart Masterson, Lea Thompson, Molly Hagan and Elias Koteas. Maybe the struggle to find one's identity was a bit simplistic, never-the-less a good movie.
