Biggest Disaster on Film. Period.
29 June 1999
This film may very well be a big disaster film, but more likely it's just a big disaster. The Airport series and even Earthquake were all better than this.

A stiffer performance from Steve McQueen or Paul Newman I've never seen. They could have had cardboard delivering the lines and it would have been better. The only person in the whole film who acted at all was William Holden. God bless him for trying.

The special effects weren't bad. In fact, they were just about the only thing in the whole movie worth seeing.

Towards the end I was cheering for people to die. Drop that one off the side of the building..please! Somehow I don't think that was what they had in mind.

As for the action sequences "directed by Irwin Allen".. there was not much action to them. They were dull, dry, boring.. words fail to describe.

Finally as the film wound a plodding path to the conclusion, I found myself laughing out loud at bits of ridiculous dialogue and even more ridiculous scripting. How they supposedly manage to put out the fire is absolutely preposterous.

I'm all for suspended belief, but the script of this film was every bit as bad as the performances elicited from some great actors. There's a reason nobody won an Oscar for acting in this one.

Hokey Disney 'packaging' at it's absolute 80's best
8 June 1999
Except for the Brady Variety Hour, this was some of the hokiest television I've seen in a while. The video production qualities weren't too bad, but the overall look and feel were unmistakeably early 80's. And Marie Osmond looks like she did battle with the Avon Lady.. and lost big time. WAY too much eyeliner.

It was kind of embarrassing to watch veterans Danny Kaye and Eric Severeid take part in this. Even more interesting was watching Alex Haley talk about the African Pavillion in World Showcase that would be opening 'in about a year.'

As of this writing it is 17 years later and it hasn't opened yet (Unless you count Disney's Animal Kingdom.) All in all though, for all the shortcomings, this still an interesting visual piece of Disney history.

Classic TV characters prepare for Erin's wedding.
2 June 1999
Many of the familiar characters from the TV series reprise their roles in this TV movie surrounding the marriage of Erin Walton. It's comfort food for those who enjoyed the series and sheer torture for those who didn't. As a child who grew up on weekly doses of the Waltons and Little House, this is basically a trip back to my youth.. no matter how sacchrine.
