The Rundown (2003)
Big Flaws
There are 2 big flaws in this movie. First, there are no baboons in South America, except in zoos. There are hundreds of species of primates living in Amazon Rainforest and they chose one that is found only in Africa and Asia. And second, the Brazilian characters have American accent. They pronounced the words correctly but it is obvious they are not from Brazil because of the accent. They could have used Brazilian actors to play the Brazilian roles. There is also a lot of bullshit in the plot that I won't talk about because, well, it's only an action movie, not an Oscar nominee. Considering this, it's pretty watchable. What could I expect from a movie starring "The Rock"?
Cidade de Deus (2002)
Finally, a good Latin American movie
This is undoubtedly the best Brazilian movie ever. I give it 9 out of 10. It is totally different of previous Brazilian movies and worths to be seen even by those who have hated all Brazilian movies that have watched.
Fernando Meirelles' masterpiece depicts with extreme realism the sad situation of millions of people who live in constant terror in brazilian slums. People grow learning not to give any value to life. They are under the barbaric rule of drug lords and do not have much chance to change their situation.
This movie shows the battle between two factions for the control of the traffic in the slum and the fight of one inhabitant of the slum to leave this nightmare.
Ken Park (2002)
Just a porn with a plot
In my opinion, this film is nothing more than a hardcore porn movie with a plot. It is clear that it was not written by someone who works in porn industry but the result was even worse.
If the intention is to criticize the decadence of morale in modern society - and supposedly it is - there isn't any reason to exhibit scenes so sexually explicit. They do not improve the movie in any way.
On the other hand, if the intention was to make a porn movie - and of course it wasn't - it was a big failure because the only attractive actress is Maeve Quinlan and some of sex scenes would be better described as "disgusting" than as "sensual".
Mannequin: On the Move (1991)
Waste of Beauty
The only thing that might have saved this movie was Kristy Swanson. I think she is only a median actress but she is one of the most beautiful woman I have ever seen in the big screen. So she was the real reason why I decided to watch this flick. I already suspected the plot was ridiculous but I thought Kristy Swanson's face would worth it.
I was totally wrong. Everything in it is so stupid that even her fantastic beauty was not enough to save this crap movie.
I give this movie a 2 + 100% "beauty bonus" = 4 (out of 10). I recommend it only for those who want to appreciate her beauty and haven't anything better to do.
Central do Brasil (1998)
Implausible story full of cheap sentimentalism
"Central do Brasil" is really idiot. Imagine the following situation.
You are a common person, you have your private life, your job, your responsibilities etc. You are working when suddenly you see a child crying. You don't know this boy, you had never seen him. He tells you his mother has just died and ask you to find his father, who lives in a city far from about a thousand miles. Then you spontaneously forgot your obligations, your work, your life and travel with the child in search of his father.
You or someone you know would do it? Don't you agree it's a nonsense? Because this is the beginning of "Central do Brasil". And the movie goes on with a lot of slush. How can somebody be so stupid on the verge of write this implausible script? But the most impressive aspect of this silly movie is its nomination to the Oscar of Best Movie in Foreign Language. Fortunately the Oscar went to Roberto Benigni's "La vita è bella".
Como Ser Solteiro (1998)
Disappointing movie
The decade of 1990 was the rebirth of Brazilian Cinema. Some good movies were made in this period (Guerra de Canudos, Mauá: o Imperador e o Rei, O Auto da Compadecida, O que é isso companheiro?, etc). But it's not the case of Como ser Solteiro. Some main characters are totally burlesque and the movie treats promiscuity like a commonplace. Como ser Solteiro is neither interesting nor funny. Don't spend your time watching this. I advertised you.
The Sixth Sense (1999)
Mediocre
I can´t understand why this movie has been so praised. It´s hard to believe that, in the twentieth first century, people yet write and make movies about ghosts and other supernatural things. This interest about stupid movies like Sixth Sense is lamentable. We need more intelligent movies to tempt people to think rationally. Not this small-brained rubbish. The script is a nonsense and despite of what is usually said, I think the end wasn´t so unforeseeable.
