Gold Diggers of 1935 (1935)
Busby Berkeley's finest hour
While the stars of this film Dick Powell,Gloria Stuart,Adolphe Menjou And the vocal by Wini Shaw all were very good, it was Busby Berkeley's film. Many say it was his finest effort, and stands alone today. His production number "Lullaby of Broadway" will never be duplicated again. There were over 100 dancers that took part in it with absolute precision, none of them ever missed a step.Hollywood could not produce such a film today, the talent is just not there. And Dick Powell and Gloria Stuart had a cute little number, in "I'm going shopping with you". The other production number "The words are in my heart" with 56 miniature pianos also great.
The Man Who Came to Dinner (1941)
Great, One of the good ones
I believe Monty Woolley stole the show as Sheridan Whiteside, I can't imagine any one else doing justice to the role he portrayed, as well. As usual. Bette Davis was in fine form, one of her lighter roles. Ann Sheridan, one of my favorites, an old Hollywood hand, was also very good. One of the better comedies to come out of Hollywood, it still stands the test of time.
A Walk in the Sun (1945)
Wartime Classic
There were many films made during the war years, Wake Island, Bataan,Air Force, Sahara,Gualacanal Diary etc.A walk in the sun has to rate with the best of them. It's a down to earth movie about the infantry.I was in the infantry during the war but I was in the pacific theater. They are the "backbone" of the army Great Film
All About Eve (1950)
Betty Davis at her finest
Hollywood of today, might take a good look at this film, they might learn what a good film, story line, directing and acting is all about. Betty Davis was the epitome of an actress, she and Joan Crawford were the tops. There aren't many of today's crowd that could hold a candle to either one of them. She and Joan were products of the Hollywood Studio system, during the Hollywood "Golden Years", that was when they made good films.
The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938)
Swash-buckling at it best
Errol Flynn was at his best in this one - the role was almost created for him. No one could touch him in this type of a film. The high point in Robin Hood was the duel between Flynn and Basil Rathbone (Sir Guy of Gisborne) in the palace, up and down the stairs, shadows, candles, with Maid Marian watching in the background. This dueling scene has to be one of the classics
Gold Diggers of 1933 (1933)
Good light fluffy musical
The country was in the depths of a depression, thank God for Warner Bros. Busby Berkley, and Hollywood. For a little while people could forget their problems. The story lines were secondary, it was the production numbers that made the film, Ginger Rogers(We're in the money), Joan Blondell (The forgotten man) and the chorus girls (Shadow Waltz) I was very young when I saw this movie, I guess I remember Joan Blondell and the "Forgotten Man" number the most. And lets not forget Dick Powell and his tenor voice
Gunga Din (1939)
One of Hollywood's finest
1939 was the golden year of Hollywood,it produced many memorable films. This was the golden age for many of the studio's I think what stands out in my memory, is the scene were Cary Grant is fighting with someone holding him by his tunic. They were on a second floor balcony, leaning out over a railing. A command came down, "Take your hands off of that man', Grant did just that and the unfortunate fellow fell to the ground. I was fourteen years old when I first saw this movie. It's one of Hollywood's classic's
