Jet Lag (2002)

Just a great little movie
7 February 2006
Please don't try to compare this to anything from Hollywood. They stopped making good movies a long time ago. Here in New Zealand we don't have a lot of contact with the French character but I have just had the pleasure of hosting a young French lady who is a top line hairdresser. While I was watching this movie I only had to close my eyes and I could see Cèline, my guest. In other hands this would have been a minor movie but in the hands of the two principals it was to say the least delightful. The story was very simple and at every turn I knew what was to come but in every way I was wrong. I have not seen very much of Luliette Binoche but now I'm a fan. In the beginning Jean Reno was a most unlikely partner but by the finish you could actually like him. Beilliant.

Chu Chin Chow (1934)
8/10
Very enjoyable

This film would have been shown in New Zealand when I was about 7 or 8 I'm now 78. There are some films from that era that stand out in my mind and this is one of them. I must have seen thousands of films since, 95% now forgotten but I always remembered Chu Chin Chow and have waited for it in vain on TCM. Checked it out on Amazon and there it was on DVD, it arrived this morning and I have watched it in full. I'm not disappointed. It is hard to believe that this was a British production because it is way up there with the best of the Americans of the era. George Robey is great and Anna May Wong a gem. It is a DVD I'll watch more than once.

Walkabout (1971)
Intriguing movie
23 March 2004
I first saw this film several years ago on TV in England and for some reason the nude bits were cut out. I saw it again in its entirety on TV in New Zealand and that made it complete. The nude scenes are necessary as they give a sort of innocence to the character and are entirely believable. The scenery is superb and true to life. The story is hard to believe but truth is really often stranger than fiction. I really couldn't see where the scientists with the balloon came into the story and it was as though they had edited it from another film. The whole scenario is very simple but I had no trouble believing it. I have just rented it again on DVD and enjoyed it as much as I have done in the past.

Tortilla Soup (2001)
My sort of movie.
3 February 2004
I have never seen nor heard of, Eat, Drink, Man, Women and just caught the start of this one on Sky Movies. As I didn't have time to watch the film at that time I looked up when it would be repeated and taped it. As I'm a passionate amateur cook I was blown away with the food preparation. As for the film, I found it sensitive, interesting and very well acted. I've watched it right through and will watch it again more than once. So there!!

Found it fascinating

It took a little while for me to figure what was going on but once I got into the story I was hooked. I think it is a very well made story and I also think that the depictions of sex were necessary to the whole theme. As in the title, sex is what it was all about. I think very well acted and directed. 9/10.

Citizen Kane (1941)
Boring, boring
22 December 2001
I have never known a Rosebud to smell as bad. I really think that this was the worst film I have ever seen. I never saw it originally at the cinema and a couple of years ago hired the video and enjoyed quite a good sleep. After seeing it praised at the millennium as the number 1 film of all time I re hired it and forced myself to sit through it. I can think of more than 100 films that leave it for dead.
