Before and After (1996)
frustrating
you know those mystery movies where everyone seems to do one dumb thing after another? this is one of those the acting was good, the basic plot premise was good, the family dynamics felt real, but there were enough screw-ups thrown in that it was frustrating to watch
home sick & nothing better is on? watch it otherwise, give it a miss
Far from Heaven (2002)
subtext subtext subtext - 10 stars
acting directing writing shooting - this film has it all the schtick here, as you probably know, is a 21st cent take on sirk's film, particularly all that heaven allows which could make this just that - all schtick but it's not
the shooting & the dialogue give this film major deja vu, but the acting pulls it above just schtick - this film could have been heavy as a sirk film or a dark comedy - instead it walks the razor's edge to be something amazing in between
dennis haysbert's study on rock hudson is amazing, yet (like everything else in the film) his performance surpasses homage to become his own
moore & quaid make us angry, make us laugh, make us cringe & make us feel for their bad choices & inappropriately timed courage & cowardice
this is haynes' best film ever - see this film even if you don't like his other work - see this film if you appreciate acting & directing in the least
Legally Blonde (2001)
compare & contrast
if you liked freeway, you'll like this in a different but similar way
check out her i-wanna-be-a-senator boyfriend do a drive-by homage to kiefer southerland in freeway
even the state of her mascara in that scene is an homage to freeway!
The Chris Isaak Show (2001)
the chris isaak show rocks
have a sense of humor? urban single & hip (or can remember being that way)? are you intelligent, cynical about human behaviour but not a fatallist?
then you'll like the show.
just remember that in real life he's not at bimbo's all the time.
did i misspell fatalist???
Dream for an Insomniac (1996)
this cutesy movie proves that debartolo knows nothing about having to pull lattes for a living...
this film is kinda cute. but not wonderful. any movie that refers to eddie veder as a kind of a rock god will soon become dated & laughable.
also, i'm bitter because i worked on this film & my name was misspelled in the credits. this is a rich girl's film about being poor.
go pull some decaf double lattes with low foam, tifanie with an ie & get back to me.
