Jack Ryan: Blue Gold (2019)
Jack Ryan faces the Terminator and is saved by a zombie
An episode of wonders! The baddie killer Max loses an eye and never bats an eyelid (bad pun intended), running around rooftops with the confidence and grace of an Olympic gymnast! The mysterious Harry gets shot in the abdomen and the foot while in London but manages to show up in the nick of time at Egham 22 miles / 30 kilometers away to save the day! The brilliant analyst Jack trustingly faces Max, the indestructible assassin who has been after him, fully exposed and is caught off guard when Max shoots him! The elite commando Marcus is surprised and disarmed by a 10-year old boy who just happens to be wandering in the jungle! The writing of this episode is so appalingly sloppy and far-fetched that it may have killed Season 2 for me - I do not have the amazing resilience of Max and Harry, nor the naivete of Jack and Marcus...
The Wonder Years (1988)
Please, release Wonder Years on DVD!
I will not retread the ecstatic reviews of thousands of people like me who consider this show to be the best, most touching TV series ever.
Indeed, it was funny, resonant, nostalgic without being too bittersweet or manipulative to the audience.
I have been looking for years to get it on DVD but I have read that copyright issues over its soundrtack have prevented such an eagerly-awaited release. Is there any way to start an internet movement to convince the powers-that-be to get over their differences and get the DVD out? I (and, I am certain, a myriad others) would be willing to even pay a higher-than-normal price, if that is what it would take.
Wing Commander (1999)
A disgrace to a great game
I did not expect to watch a masterpiece, but, still, this movie was a bad shock for me. After having experienced the depth of the plot of the Wing Commander games and the attention to the production of the games' cutscenes, I cannot understand how the same person who was the mind and the soul behind the games could violate his own brainchild to such degree. The plot covered the events of only the first game (if they expected the audience to look forward to a sequel, they should have tried much harder), the story is full of holes and scientific inaccuracies of the greatest magnitude, the actors are worse than those in the game and it is evident that the creators of the film simply copied cliches from war movies in order to make their own (you get all kinds of anachronistic deja vus: a depth charge attack - in deep space!, a destroyed starfighter being pushed off the deck of a carrier - in zero gravity, etc.). Actually, the only reason I've spent five minutes of my life to write about this disaster is because I hated it so much.
Sub Down (1997)
Unacceptably unrealistic
The filmmakers apparently made no effort to maintain even the lowest acceptable level of technical/scientific/logical consistency. It was never explained convincingly why the crew abandoned the conn (was it the gas leak? if so, why didn't they put their gas masks on?) effectively losing all control over their boat and fate, the procedures presented are way off the mark, the exhausted, asphyxiated crewmen find the energy (and the oxygen!) to cheer at the end, the conning tower diving planes have miraculously broken through the ice without leaving any trace (they are much wider than the trough opened by the sub), etc., etc. A waste of time and money, both for the makers and the viewers. Only thing worth it is Gabrielle Anwar (mainly because she is very agreeable to look at).
