Alpha Girls (2013)

A Lot of Fun
15 August 2013
Alpha Girls is a fun throwback flick that dishes out a good time on a Saturday night. I prefer to use "cheeky" rather than "campy" to describe the horror film's undertones. It has a fun mix of 'The Craft' Meets 'Mean Girls' that really works in the movie's favor. All of the actresses put 100% into their performances and bring individual life to their characters. Zito and Trov have designed a movie that nods to everything from 'The Amityville Horror' to 'Revenge of the Nerds' and it works. When used, the special make-up effects are successful and throw a nice amount of gore onto some pretty pictures.

Definitely fun with a group of people. Don't miss this one.

Still a gut-buster

I first saw this when I was about ten. Granted, I may not have matured much, but it's still just as funny. There is nothing socially redeeming or smart about the flick. I take that back... it does have some clever moments. Very tongue-in-cheek. They knew what kind of movie they were making at the time and, I think, hit the mark. Chevy Chase plays a pre-Fletch CIA guy whose job is protect a dopey ambassador and his wife while being chased by Nazis in the same hotel where the Munchkin cast of "The Wizard of Oz" are staying. Wow, that was a long sentence. Anyway, at the end of the day it's about drunken little people. That should be enough. Drunk. Little. People.

Cold Hearts (1999)

"Dawson's Creek" Meets "The Lost Boys"
21 September 1999
I guess this can serve as a double review since we screened the film twice. The first was at Planet Hollywood in Beverly Hills about this time last year. It was the same version that was shown at Temple University. It was made clear that we were screening was the Rough Cut. Yes, the sound was off and the picture was dark in some places. That is because the film hadn't been finished. It even had all of the time codes and the such running across the bottom. Then a few months later... at the Paramount Screening last November we showed the finished film. The colors are fantastic and the surround sound was amazing. The actors did a great job; Amy Jo Johnson was fantastic as the troubled friend and Robert Floyd turned in a good performance as the awkward "mystery man". One thing this film is not is a straight horror movie. It's almost secondary that some of the characters are vampires.
