Public Enemies (2009)
too high expectations
It's difficult to tell why such a good and well shot film like this leaves the wrong mouth taste... but this happens. When you look too many times at your watch, the usual reason is you are not immersed in the movie.
And this is a pity. Specially when a superb Depp makes you believe you are looking at the very eyes of John Dillinger, when Bale's face is so deeply involved in his Purvis pose, and specially when production design and cinematography (a great job by Dante Spinotti) sometimes make you think you are watching a documentary instead of 'just' a movie.
Maybe the problem is that 'sometimes'. Or maybe a script that doesn't tie the spectator to the cinema chair.
A good film that could have been a great film.
Mamma Mia! (2008)
What an enjoyable film!
Leaving aside that Meryl Streep is the kind of actress that elevates the level of any film she is in, "Mamma Mia" is the ideal movie you need when you're down.
Its rhythm, its light (curiously, a Greek photography director for shooting in Greece), its freshness, everything... makes this film a celebration of life.
It was about time to have a movie with no special effects or similar tricks. Just plain cinema.
Specially indicated for those who want to leave the cinema with a smile.
Scorchers (1991)
Free falling
I remember this film as one of the most engaging beginnings in a long time... but then it gets terribly boring. What a pity. Faye Dunaway and James Earl Jones are great, as usual, but the script gets lost. The same ideas with a different script would have made a better film.
¿Qué he hecho YO para merecer esto!! (1984)
The best Almodovar condensed in just one film
Perhaps the most intelligent film ever made by Almodovar. Keen, sarcastic, ironic, plenty of details to discover every time, well acted, very well directed... It is a compendium of the new filming from Spain. And, of course, much better than his more commercial "Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios".
