I was rooting for the earthquake
the acting was only as bad as the bad script and I found myself hoping the earthquake would hit and take them all out.... one of the worst mini-series I've ever seen from that aspect.... Special Effects were fabulous and deserved a more believable script. The people were, for the most part, unlikeable and directed in a very over-the-top style. I really have a hard time knowing who to blame for this debacle... the script was bad, the casting was bad, the story was unbelievable and I know I stayed for all 4 hours to see the special effects. minor trivia goof: On the screen when the President called in the national Guard et al; it's Martial Law not Marshal Law!!!
Mary Poppins (1964)
Best of all Disney...
A teacher of mine handed me a play one day called "My Fair Lady" and opened a new life for me... I saved until I could buy the Orig Broadway Cast recording of "My Fair Lady" and could soon sing along w/Rex Harrison & Julie Andrews so I was crushed when I heard she was not chosen for the movie... as she commented when she picked up the Oscar for best actress in "Mary Poppins" instead "Thank you Jack Warner"... Mary Poppins was for me the best of all Disney movies. Living in a small Minnesota town where the biggest excitement of the week was "What's on Disney this Sunday Night?" and the second biggest was "What movie is Disney promoting after the 'Wonderful World of Disney'" ... Mary Poppins helped this then-12-year-old-kid who was hurting from the recent death of his mother fly off to a kind of "Mental Neverland" and cope... The only thing I never understood was the casting of the (normally) very funny Dick Van Dyke as a cockney ??? but he made up for it with "I Love to Laugh" & playing the elderly banker
Dinner at Eight (1933)
Greatest Double-Take in Film History...
When Carlotta Vance (Marie Dressler)is walking in to dinner with Kitty Packard (Jean Harlow) she is stopped dead in her tracks when Kitty says "I was reading a book the other day..." ... It made the movie for me (although I thought it was a great movie before that happened)Made in 1932 and released in 1933 it may seem that there is a lot of "overacting"... You must remember the sound recording equipment was pretty new stuff then and most of these actors were trained for the stage so there is a lot of "loud" line delivery and quite a bit of mugging but view it with the knowledge of the age of the piece (70+ years as I write this) ... If you enjoy this work of Marie Dressler be sure to see "Min & Bill" with Wallace Beery
Rat Race (2001)
Very Funny & sometimes Unpredictable
Being a lover of "Airplane", "Police Squad" & "It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" I was hoping for the best. And I was pleasantly surprised! This is going to be a keeper & if you decide to watch it, pay attention! This story moves fast and like most outrageous comedies, leave your disbelief at the door. The movie takes many cliches and freshens them. I was disappointed with Jon Lovitz and Whoopi Goldberg (She needs a good script really bad!)
See How They Run (1964)
Billed originally as the 1st ever "Made For TV" Movie
Billed originally as the 1st ever "Made For TV" Movie. I remember my family was pretty excited in a small Minnesota town to see a "new" movie. At the local theater (KEE Theater in Kiester MN)a "new" movie was one that had finished running on the major circuit and finally been affordable for a MN theater owner (Usually 1-3 years after the movie came out: Sound of Music showed up in my hometown for it's 1st run in 1967 or 68 I think.
I enjoyed the movie "See How They Run" but I'm remembering it from 38 years ago!!!
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street in Concert (2001)
Fabulous Production
I was fortunate to get really lousy seats for the Saturday evening taping in SF. I was also at the earlier taping in LA with Angela Lansbury & Hearn. Both productions were exceptional and both for different reasons. If you are a Sondheim fan either of these productions will thrill you. If you are just a Sondheim beginner start with "A Little Night Music" or "Into the Woods" as the music in this show is close to impossible to "sing-along" with
