The Battle of Love's Return (1971)
Before there was Troma there was "The Battle!"
Lloyd Kaufman (the creator of "Toxie" and Troma) wrote, directed, produced, wrote the music, edited and stars in this film about a poor guy who is troubled by life and love in the big city. The film is very different from most in that it incorporates both fictional and (could be fictional) interview footage into the narative. I walked away with the feeling that the city (New York) is a cold place and so is the modern world! But that's just one man's opinion!
Pink Flamingos (1972)
The King of Trash's #1 magnum opus
Pink Flamingos is by far one of the funniest films I have ever seen, ever! It is a mix of over the top camp, shock and it is just ahead of it's time! Divine and the Marbles fight over who is the filthiest people alive. Huh? What does that remind you of? Daytime tv? American's culture and love of fame is exposed to the highest degree of satire. This belongs as one of the greatest social satires of all time! HOW FAR WILL YOU GO FOR FAME? I think Divine answers that question with the final scene in the film!
This is not for everyone but it is for those who are a little off kilter themselves! I enjoyed it when I saw the release in the theater. I own a copy for myself too (autographed by John Waters too!!)! Not an everyday film and not for the kids!
