- Justin walks to a fence around a field or horses and watches them run. He calls to Farmer Frank, saying that he's looking for a gallant white steed and victory in his heart, and he's lost his. Frank tells Justin to stay away from his horse, calls him crazy, and threatens to call the cops. Justin says that his wounds bestowed in battle can't be taken away, and walks off down the highway. He stops to look at a windmill, and remembers fighting Shiv in the school gymnasium. Justin remembers holding his mop as a lance, and holding the Staff. He wonders why he can't remember his past, and when he sees a flag on a nearby tractor, briefly remembers Stripesy as Starman's "squire".
A bus passes by, and the people inside look briefly at Justin. Among them is Sam Kurtis, heading to Blue Valley, who is holding an old locket. The bus pulls over in town, and Sam gets off and goes to the Dugan house.
In the basement, Barbara wonders who they can call since Henry Sr. killed Henry. Pat says that if they make the wrong move, they could get someone else killed or lead the ISA there. He tells Barbara to leave with Courtney like she said she was, but Barbara refuses to leave town with ISA threatening lives. Pat tells Barbara and Courtney to go about their normal lives, because if Jordan suspects they know something he'll come after them.
Mike comes down and says that there's someone at the door looking for Courtney. Sam is inside, looking around the living room. Pat and Barbara come in, and Barbara stares at her ex-husband in surprise. Sam says that he got Barbara's email, and Pat introduces himself. Sam says that he's Courtney's father, and Courtney comes in. Her biological father says that she's really grown up, and Courtney says that Sam isn't her father. She asks what he's doing there, and Sam says that if Barbara came back to Blue Valley when she said she'd never came back, it must be serious. Sam explains that he replied to Barbara's email but never heard back, and was worried.
Courtney whispers to Barbara that Sam isn't her dad. Barbara tells her daughter that she's sorry it's happening at that moment, and Sam holds up the locket and shows it to Courtney. Courtney asks where he got it, and Sam says that he used to have the one she's wearing and then gave it to her a long time ago. The girl says that she doesn't believe him and wants to talk to Pat, and goes upstairs with her stepfather.
In Courtney's room, Courtney tells Pat that Sam can't be her father, and she notes that the Staff wouldn't work for her if she wasn't Starman's daughter. She wonders what she's been doing if she isn't Starman's daughter, and blames herself for getting Joey and Henry killed. Pat assures her that she didn't kill anyone. Mike comes in and asks what's going on, and if Sam is Courtney's father. He also wonders if Pat and Barbara are breaking up. When Pat tells him to get out, Mike wonders why his father doesn't tell him anything and wonders what he did wrong. Pat assures him that he didn't do anything wrong and everything is going to be fine, but Mike clearly doesn't believe him and leaves.
Down in the living room, Barbara says that she never heard back from Sam after Christmas Eve ten years ago, and looked for him for Courtney's sake. Barbara finally gave up looking, and wonders why Sam is really there after a decade. Sam tells Barbara that he's been thinking about reaching out to her for months, and he's there to get to know Courtney before it's too late... if it's not already too late.
Courtney comes in and says that she wants to talk, no matter why she has to appear at school. Sam says that he'll just go for a quick walk with Courtney, and Barbara agrees.
At the school, Justin goes to his office and moans in pain at the voices in his head. He looks at himself in the mirror and recoils in shock, imagining Dragon King looking back at him. After a moment the hallucination fades and Justin vows to find his mind. The white horse is on the nearby calendar hanging on the wall, and Justin hears whinnying in his head. Justin vows to find his steed, sees a poster of Pat's garage that he's picked up, and figures that Pat can help him. He grabs his sword that is leaning against the wall and leaves.
As they walk down the street, Courtney asks Sam where he's been, and demands the truth. Sam says that he understands why she resents him, and his mother gave him the lockets and he gave one to Courtney. He talks about the Christmas carols they sung together when Courtney was 4, and Courtney remembers it. Sam says that saying sorry will never be enough, and he wishes he could go back in time and do things differently. Courtney walks away and Sam offers to buy her breakfast and provide an explanation. The girl agrees to 30 minutes.
Pat arrives at his garage, and finds Rick and Beth there. He wonders where Yolanda is, and Beth says that she wanted to go to church before school to pray because of Henry. Beth wonders where Courtney is, and Pat tells her that she's with Sam and Sam isn't Starman. Justin comes in carrying his sword and calls Pat "Stripesy", saying that he needs his help. He imagines the trio as Dragon King and two of his drones, and he unlimbers his sword.
Pat tries to get through to Justin, and Pat realizes who Justin is. The hallucination fades for Justin as Pat calms him down, and Justin draws his sword and falls to his knees, sobbing. He says that he's not well, and Pat tells Rick and Beth that Justin is strongest, bravest man he's ever known.
At Jordan's office in the American Dream, Henry Sr. looks at a mounted globe of the world. Jordan comes in and says that he's sorry. Henry says that Ito has restored his memories, and he remembers that Stargirl is Courtney, and Pat is Stripesy. He says that he's going to go kill them, and Jordan tells him no. Henry asks why not, and reads Jordan's mind and learns that he's hesitating because of Barbara. Jordan tells Henry to stay out of his head, then says that Courtney's death would devastate Barbara.
Henry points out that he killed his wife and son for Jordan's American Dream Project, and offers to erase Barbara's memory of Pat and Courtney. Jordan says that he doesn't want Henry inside of Barbara's head, either, and Henry points out that he'll soon be in the heads of millions. When Henry Jr. died, Henry's mental powers grew as if he absorbed his son's powers into him. Now he can control half the country, and everything Jordan and his wife wanted is going to come to pass. Henry tells Jordan to make up his mind or he'll make it up for him, and leaves.
At the diner, Sam and Courtney have breakfast. Sam says that he traveled a lot on work, chasing business opportunities that never panned out. He says that he'd like to be more than a stranger to Courtney, and hopes that they can spend some time together in California. Courtney finally agrees, and Sam says that they'll figure it out.
Rick looks at an old photo of the Seven Soldiers, including Stripesy and Shining Knight, and Pat tells Rick and Beth that he'll explain to them about the Soldiers later. Pat shows the photos to Justin, and asks if he remembers who he is. When Rick comes over, Justin says that his sword is Excalibur and grabs it. Pat asks Justin to tell him the story of where he got Excalibur, and Justin describes how he was once a lowly boy cleaning the horses' stables. King Arthur bestowed Excalibur to Justin on the king's deathbed, and said heroes could come from anywhere.
Beth realizes that Justin is from the past, and Pat says that he believes it. He takes the sword and asks Justin to tell him the story of how he got to Blue Valley. Justin says that he was following "the dragon" by himself, because the Soldiers were scattered and gone. The Dragon still needed slaying, and Justin was captured and "they" stole his identity from him. He fears that they'll steal all their identities, and Pat calms him down. Justin says that none of them are safe and looks at STRIPE. Justin figures that Pat built a fine suit of armor.
Back at the house, Pat tells Barbara that Courtney is on her way back. He says that Courtney is safe, and that the ISA did something to Justin. Pat figures that the ISA is planning a mass brainwashing of some sort, and Barbara says that she made up a bed so that Justin could get some rest. Sam and Courtney arrive, and Pat sees them coming through the kitchen window. Outside, Sam asks Courtney to sit for a second and she agrees. Courtney thanks Sam for visiting her, and he takes out his mother's locket and says that the pair of them are special. He explains that the lockets were made by a jeweler to the stars and they're really valuable. Sam suggests that if he sold them, he could put a deposit down on his own place and that's where Courtney can come visit. He suggests that they go shopping together in LA, and Courtney gives Sam her locket and says he can have it. Sam pockets it and says that he'll be back, and when he is he wants to hear all about Courtney's life.
Courtney goes into the house and finds Pat waiting for her. He realizes that Sam is gone, and says that he's there if Courtney needs to let it out. Pat says that he's there for Courtney, and she breaks into tears and hugs him. Barbara comes down and sees them together,.
Pat goes after Sam and asks him what the hell he's thinking. Sam says that he's heading home, and Pat tells him that Courtney loves the locket. When Sam says that he'll make it up to Courtney, Pat tells him to never come back. Sam chuckles and says that he wasn't planning to, and asks Pat to tell Barbara that she still looks good but not as goo d as when he "had her". Pat knocks Sam down with a punch and tells him that he's lucky he's busy, and then walks away.
Courtney goes to the basement and opens the crate with the Staff. Barbara comes up behind her daughter and says that she shouldn't have reached out to Sam. Courtney tells her that it's okay and she needed to know, and she put everyone in danger by believing in a fairy tale. Barbara says that she wants to leave with Courtney, but there are families in Blue Valley that need protecting. She wonders what to do, because if she lets Courtney stay and fight she might die.
Kneeling, Courtney picks up the Staff , but it doesn't respond to her. She then tells Barbara that it doesn't matter because the Staff isn't meant for her anymore. Courtney says that she's ready to leave Blue Valley when Barbara is and leaves.
In his office, Jordan calls Steven and tells him to hack Barbara's computer for him. Steven does by remote as Jordan looks on. Barbara's browsing history has been deleted, and Steven restores it at Jordan's order. A newspaper article about Icicle murdering Starman comes up, and after seeing it Jordan turns off the lights and leaves.
At the high school in the cafeteria, Beth, Rick, and Yolanda are sitting together at one table. Courtney joins them and finally says that she's not Stargirl. Beth insists that she is, but Courtney tells her that her father was just some jerk. Yolanda and Beth don't think it makes a difference, and Courtney tells them that the Staff won't work for her because it knows she's not Starman's daughter. Rick tells her that the Staff is stupid, but Courtney figures that she shouldn't have used it. Because of that, it's her fault that Joey and Henry are dead. She doesn't want anyone else to get hurt because she thinks she's someone she's not.
Later, the students gather in the auditorium to commemorate Henry's death. The JSA are among the students, and Henry comes up to speak about his son. Henry says that Henry Jr. loved them all, and no one is to blame. The man sends a telepathic message to Courtney saying she's to blame, and asks her to come back after the ISA. Continuing, Henry says that they can honor Henry Jr.'s loss by living better lives, and leaves the stage.
Courtney goes to the basement and Pat, seeing her, follows her. She picks up the Staff and tells it to activate, and tells Pat that Brainwave remembers that she's Stargirl. The Staff doesn't activate, and Courtney figures that it doesn't want her anymore because she's not Starman's daughter. Pat tells her that isn't true, and the Staff chose her because it believed in her. Now it's waiting for her to believe in herself. He leaves to give her some time to think about the fact heroes can come from anywhere, and says that he'll be outside the door.
Upstairs, Barbara asks Pat what's going on. Courtney comes upstairs and says the Staff isn't working, and she needs both of them with her. They all go downstairs and Courtney takes a deep breath, then grasps the Staff. A wind blows up as power flows through the Staff, and then it glows with energy. The lights in the basement burn out from the energy, and Justin comes watches them from the stairs. Courtney sees him, and Justin says that their queen has risen.
Brainwave is standing in the ISA chamber looking at the painting of the members. Jordan comes in and Brainwave reads his mind, and says that he's glad Jordan made the right decision. Henry tells him that they'll take care of Stargirl, Pat, and Barbara. Jordan tells him that they'll kill Mike as well, because they can't leave a legacy running around. Brainwave agrees and walks out, and Jordan looks at the computer screen counting down to his project's execution... with twelve hours left.
