The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Thursday revealed the 366 feature films that are eligible for consideration at the 93rd Oscars, which are set to air April 25 live on ABC.
The total number of films is up from last year’s 344 films in contention.
This year’s list was compiled based on tweaked eligibility rules implemented because of the coronavirus pandemic, which has pushed the ceremony to its latest date ever. For this year, feature films had to open by February 28 in a commercial motion picture theater for a seven-day qualifying run in at least one of six metro areas: Los Angeles County, New York City, the Bay Area, Chicago, Miami and Atlanta. Drive-in theaters open nightly were included as qualifying venues, as were films intended for theatrical release but because of the lockdown made available first via streaming, VOD service or other broadcast.

Well, it’s official: Thanks to the coronavirus — and the kind of real-world disaster-movie mayhem that even Hollywood couldn’t invent — summer movie season is canceled. Now that “Tenet” and “Mulan” have both scrapped their summer U.S. theatrical release plans, there’s nothing even remotely resembling a blockbuster on the horizon.
The good news — and there is good news — is that we’re deep enough into this pandemic that distributors have figured out how to release their films virtually, and in some cases, to drive-ins and those few hardtop venues safe (or stubborn) enough to remain open. That means moviegoers can see thrillers “The Rental” and “Amulet,” as well as Vinnie Jones starrer “The Big Ugly,” in select theaters this week, while movie-stayers — those living under lockdown, or simply too cautious to return to cinemas — can order the same movies on demand.
Meanwhile, the streaming services continue to thrive.

UK and Ireland, opening Friday July 24
Without major studio tentpoles driving audiences to cinemas, takings in the UK and Ireland remain low compared to pre-lockdown and were up just 1.8% last weekend despite a 27% increase in reopened sites.
But a raft of independent features and the re-release of a fantasy blockbuster may translate into a stronger weekend, as exhibitors hope to see audience confidence grow in returning to cinemas.

Few actors can boast a career quite like Malcolm McDowell, and he’s still working, prolifically, in the present day. His latest is the Anglo-American gangster flick The Big Ugly, written and director by Scott Wiper. We had the immense pleasure of speaking to them both, on seperate occasions, to discuss this collaboration.
“I’m only involved because of Vinnie,” McDowell said of co-star Vinnie Jones, when as asked what attracted him to this project. “I love Vinnie. He’s a great guy. I knew him a bit because of golf, and he came up to play in my tournament, and he’s such a fun character and I’ve always liked his work and I know that he’s the cockney heavy, the gangster, but when he explained to me that this was his chance to do something more interesting and not just be the heavy, I brought into...

Malcolm McDowell is awesome. Primarily known for the iconic role of Alex DeLarge in Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange, he’s also appeared in over 300 films across his long and varied career. For me, he’s the epitome of the British actor who doesn’t attach a huge amount of ego to his work: just give him a paycheque and he’ll turn up and deliver the goods (see also Ben Kingsley).
Across the years, McDowell has appeared in everything from critical darlings like if…, The Artist and The Player, to fun B-movie trash like Cyborg 3: The Recycler, I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead, Doomsday (I would highly recommend that last one if you want a really weird movie) and even 2007’s Halloween. And apparently, the moment he leaves the set and collects his cheque, he forgets all about them.

"I'm not leaving 'till I find her." Vertical Ent. has released an official trailer for a crime thriller titled The Big Ugly, the latest from American filmmaker Scott Wiper. This revenge film is about a career criminal named Neeyln, who travels to West Virginia from London alongside his boss in order to strike a deal with an American oilman. But once the initial joy subsides, Neeyln is upset to discover that his girlfriend has mysteriously vanished. When he tries to figure out what happened to her, "it become clear that the people he originally thought were his business associates might have more to hide than originally believed." The film stars Vinnie Jones, Ron Perlman, Malcolm McDowell, Nicholas Braun, and Leven Rambin. Looks solid - more of an intense character study than just an action thriller. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Scott Wiper's The Big Ugly, direct from Vertical's...

Vertical Entertainment has released a new trailer for Scott Wiper’s ‘The Big Ugly’ starring Vinnie Jones and Ron Perlman.

When Harris strikes a deal with an old friend – American oilman Preston (Ron Perlman) – they find themselves in the wild hills of West Virginia.
Contracts are signed and the whiskey flows in celebration, but overnight Neelyn’s girlfriend disappears, last seen with Preston’s wayward son Junior. Lines are drawn between family and friends, but nothing will stop Neelyn from getting answers — and retribution.
The film is written, directed, and produced by Scott Wiper & stars Vinnie Jones (Snatch, Gone in 60 Seconds), Ron Perlman (Hellboy, Sons of Anarchy), and Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange, Halloween).

This morning Vertical Entertainment reports a company VOD record for the release of Bron Studios Josh Trank Tom Hardy gangster pic Capone with a 10-day gross of $2.5M-plus.
Capone was released on May 12 via on-demand platforms including, but not limited to, iTunes, where it soared to #1 on the charts within its first 3 days of release. VOD figures aren’t always readily reported, but perhaps with more movies going to the platform during Covid-19, distributors will make them more transparent. Reports last had Universal/DreamWorks Animation’s Trolls World Tour at close to $100M off Pvod, but Warner Bros. never reported anything last weekend on their in-home release of Scoob which was available both for 48-hour rental and digital purchase.
To give you some idea of the momentum of Capone: The pic’s first 10 days rep close to 40% of what Radius’ Bong Joon Ho 2014 movie Snowpiercer made over its first...

About seven years ago, stories about “Bob Dylan’s Rapping Grandson” flooded the internet. Pablo Dylan — the child of Bob’s oldest son, Jesse — was just 15 at the time and he was trying to promote his new mixtape. “My grandfather, I consider him the Jay-z of his time,” he said, in comments that ricocheted all over the web. “I love him to death.” It was a rare breach of the unofficial Dylan family code of silence, and the first time a member of the clan tried to make a go...
