One of the first American TV programs about the African National Congress, filmed at a time of rising protests and violence in South Africa. Portions of the documentary first aired as news reports on the PBS MacNeil/Lehrer Newshour.
"South Africa Under Siege" aired nationally on PBS stations in April 1986. When it first aired on KQED, the presenting station, it was followed by an additional half-hour film, "Voices of the ANC," also produced by Stephen Talbot and his team. "Voices" included an ANC choir and comments from ANC activists in exile in southern Africa's "frontline states."
Stephen Talbot of KQED-TV won the World Affairs Council of Northern California's annual Thomas M. Stroke International Journalism Television Award in 1986 for his documentary "South Africa Under Siege."
