Akira is not only famous in the anime and manga sphere but also pop-culture in general. Critics and movie directors alike refer to Akira as one of the greatest and most influential films of the past 30 years. So it’s no wonder fans discredited Stephen Spielberg and George Lucas for turning the film down because it wouldn’t suit western audiences.
According to Manga Entertainment co-creator Andy Frain, Akira shaped modern sci-fi as people know it today. Films like Midnight Special, Looper, The Matrix, Chronicle, Inception, and even the TV show Stranger Things, all borrowed thematically and stylistically from Akira. In fact, two of those five movies even feature a child with destructive telekinetic powers as one of the main plot points.

Suicide Squad Isekai has proven the potential of superhero franchise adaptions to the anime genre to be a great success. While Deadpool and Wolverine’s recent blockbuster movie has taken the Marvel franchise to new heights, DC fans are also enjoying their fair share of amusement seeing their beloved character explore new mysteries in an Isekai universe.

Suicide Squad Isekai perfectly highlights each DC character’s traits before starting their adventure tale in another universe. Indeed, the series receives tons of praise from the fandom for perfectly blending the DC universe with the concept of the Isekai. The anime Suicide Squad Isekai has brought beloved characters into the series, such as Harley Quinn, Deadshot, and many more DC Comics icons as well.

One of the most popular sources for anime adaptations today is the website Shousetsuka ni Naru, translated as “Let’s Become a Novelist.” Anybody may publish their work there for free. Stories that win a devoted readership are scouted to become light novels and anime series. These include isekai titles like Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation , Ascendance of a Bookworm and My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! But there are also court mysteries ( The Apothecary Diaries ), romance ( My Happy Marriage ) and self-contained novels ( I Want to Eat Your Pancreas ). China and Korea have their own vibrant web fiction scenes. Stories published on sites like Qidan and KakaoPage have been adapted into comics, television series and even Japanese anime. What you may not know, though, is that there is a growing English language web fiction community. It does not yet compare in scale or prestige to its counterparts in East Asia.

Filming is underway on The Possession of Gladstone Manor, the latest film from director K. Levin wrote The Possession of Gladstone Manor with Danny Matier (The Unborn), working from a story by Addam Bramich. One of my favorite "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" characters is Anya Jenkins (Emma Caulfield), the Vengeance Demon turned human. She's introduced as the villain of the season 3 episode "The Wish," in which Cordelia (Charisma Carpenter) wishes for a world where Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) never came to Sunnydale. When Anya makes Cordelia's wish come true, vampires end up ruling the town in the Slayer's absence.
Restoring the proper timeline robbed Anya of her powers; she's stuck as just another teenager attending Sunnydale High (and flunking math). Initially resentful of her new life, she eventually falls for Xander (Nicholas Brendon), and by season 4, she's part of the Scooby gang, sharing duties with her boyfriend as the show's comic relief.
Anya is hilarious; much of the humor in "Buffy" is sardonic, but she's oblivious. Having spent centuries as a vengeance demon, modern socialization skills escape her. Anya can be just as cutting or rude as the others,...

The world of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" returned last week — but it looks a lot different than the last time fans saw it. Or, rather, it sounds different: the show's revival comes not in the form of another TV season, but an Audible exclusive audio series called "Slayers." It's a clever way to get the monster-fighting band back together, all while side-stepping issues that might arise with revisiting this world — like supposedly immortal monsters aging with their actors.
"Slayers" also gives fan favorite "Buffy" castmates a chance to reinvent their characters, as it features a wild, universe-hopping plot that sees dead characters revived, scripts from Tara actress Amber Benson and novelist Christopher Golden (original series creator Joss Whedon is not involved with the project), and, most thrilling of all: Cordelia Chase, vampire slayer. Yep, Charisma Carpenter is returning to the Buffyverse after two decades away, and she's taking on an...

"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" might have left TV screens 20 years ago, but the exploits of the slayer and her compatriots didn't end in 2003. Take for instance how many of the events from the much-derided "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" movie were re-written back into Buffy lore, so to speak, in a 1999 comic book series by Dan Brereton and Christopher Golden entitled "The Origin." Co-signed by "Buffy" creator and showrunner Joss Whedon, "The Origin" basically retold the 1992 film in a way that fit Whedon's original vision and the show's tone. And that's just one of many Buffy tales that have been told outside of the show proper.
Now, Golden has teamed up with actress Amber Benson, who played Tara in "Buffy," for the new Audible original, "Slayers: A Buffyverse Story." This audio series further expands the Buffyverse by telling a story set 10 years after the events of the original series finale. "Slayers...

"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" was once the most progressive show on television, so how is it possible that someone with a long history of mistreating women could create a long-standing feminist masterpiece? Series creator Joss Whedon was once at the top of the world of superhero fans and comic book nerds, many of whom fell in love with his beautiful blonde avatar, Buffy, a demon-fighting highschooler with superhuman strength and agility. The show's heroine was a uniquely powerful depiction of a ditzy Valley girl, turning the then-contemporary damsel-in-distress archetype on its head. But we've since learned that, behind the scenes, Whedon was doing everything he could to make the women of the show feel powerless.

The cast of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” is ready to reclaim the narrative. Through the new Audible original, “Slayers: A Buffyverse Story,” several actors from the acclaimed drama series are back together to play their beloved characters once again — this time in an audio original podcast.
“Slayers” is co-written by Amber Benson, who portrayed Tara in “Buffy,” and Christopher Golden, who has penned multiple books in the “Buffyverse.” Before the Covid pandemic, Benson began calling her former costars to see who might want to be involved, focusing on the characters she felt weren’t serviced enough in the original show. She also wanted to find a way to highlight what it means to be a slayer who is also a woman of color.
That’s where Laya DeLeon Hayes came in, portraying 16-year-old Slayer Indira Nunnally in the new series, which takes place in 2013, 10 years after “Buffy” ended. James Marsters returns as Spike,...

Since "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" staked its last monster 20 years ago, the franchise hasn't exactly rested peacefully. Continuation comics, novels, and planned reboots have kept the Buffyverse alive, but its legacy has also been complicated by allegations of workplace misconduct and bullying made against series creator Joss Whedon.
The latest installment of the world of Buffy, the Audible series "Slayers: A Buffyverse Story," aims to course-correct that, reuniting key cast members for the first time ever to tell a story Whedon plays no part in. To say the writer is nowhere to be found here would be inaccurate, though, as "Slayers" -- an intermittently charming, sometimes forced new chapter -- is all about overcoming the toxic influence of the past.
The story takes place roughly 12 years after Buffy Summers instilled all potential slayers with their full power, breaking a cycle of pain and isolation that afflicted centuries worth of chosen teen girls.

Twenty years have gone by since the Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series reached the end of its seven season run – but on October 12th, Audible will be releasing the original audio drama Slayers: A Buffyverse Story, which features the voices of several Buffy cast members and continues the story of the show, picking up ten years after the events of the series finale.

In every generation, there is a chosen one… who inspires hours upon hours of entertainment. Twenty years after the series finale of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the Buffyverse is still expanding, with the franchise’s first-ever audio drama on the way. The upcoming Audible production Slayers: A Buffyverse Story reunites Buffy stars James Marsters, Charisma Carpenter, Anthony Stewart Head, Emma Caulfield, Amber Benson, Danny Strong, James Charles Leary, and Juliet Landau for “a fresh story and a new world, filled with horror, heart, humor, and surprises at every turn,” as Audible said in a press release. Written by Benson and Christopher Golden — more on him later — Slayers follows vampire Spike (Marsters) into a parallel reality where Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Buffy Summers never existed and Cordelia (Carpenter) is the one and only Slayer. And Cordelia needs Spike’s help with a big problem named Drusilla (Landau)… That audio drama premieres...

Twenty years after audiences watched Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar) slay her last demon, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" is set to return with a multiverse-style sequel. The new story won't be a TV show, but an audio series called "Slayers: A Buffyverse Story" -- a format switch that, while perhaps less common than a straightforward revival series, has been done successfully before by at least one other big fandom genre show, "Orphan Black."
There are a lot of reasons worth getting excited about "Slayers." Eight original series cast members are returning for the new project, including Emma Caulfield Ford (Anya), Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia), Anthony Head (Giles), James Marsters (Spike), and more. Amber Benson is also returning despite her character Tara's controversial death in season 6 of the original show -- apparently the new series will play with alternate realities, allowing her character's reappearance. Scottish actor Gerard Butler has been headlining some of Hollywood's biggest, most successful, and most talked-about blockbuster releases for three decades. If any 2000s action star has a claim to A-list status, it's him. However, it still feels like not enough people discuss his acting talents.
For most of his career, Butler has prioritized a kind of unapologetically corny and popular cinema that often skews ... controversial, to say the least. Good and campy fun is Butler's bread-and-butter -- whether it's action, romance, adventure, or a musical. The key to appreciating him as a performer is to understand this fact and fall in love with the easy-watching pleasure these movies provide. However, it's also worth noting what deeper dimensions Butler brings to these roles, too. So here's an appraisal of the 12 best Gerard Butler movies. For the unacquainted, these picks will help viewers fall in love with the man's unique brand of crowd-pleasing entertainment.

It feels just like last month we were complimenting Hulu on its true crime offerings. Well, with its list of new releases for February 2023, Hulu is staying in the true crime lane. Suppose that’ll happen when you push back the release date of a series or two.
February sees the arrival of three notable true crime series on Hulu. Taiwan Crime Stories premieres on Feb. 1 and presents four true tales from Taiwan’s criminal “dark underbelly.” That will be followed by ABC News Studios’ Killing County on Feb. 3. That three-episode series ponders the question “what happens when police kill?” The most interesting true crime offering premieres on Feb. 9. That’s when Stolen Youth: Inside the Cult at Sarah Lawrence College shares its four-episode saga of Larry Ray and the young college students he victimized.
As far as non true crime offerings go, the third and final season of Hulu...

Congratulations are in order for Abigail Breslin and businessman Ira Kunyansky. On Jan. 29, the 26-year-old "Little Miss Sunshine" actor broke the news on her Instagram. "ya girl got married y'all," she captioned a photo of her left hand, which featured a wedding band in addition to her engagement ring. Reps for Breslin declined to comment further on the announcement.
A day later, Breslin, who most recently starred in the comedy-horror film "Slayers," shared a blissful picture of the newlyweds from their Jan. 28 ceremony, revealing her striking bridal dress by Simin Couture. "married my bestest friend," she wrote, promising more details about her dress, hair, and makeup were coming soon. Kunyansky also offered a glimpse of their big day on his Instagram, posting a photo of the two lifted in the air during the hora, with his now-wife hilariously looking terrified. "Love my other second half," he simply captioned.

Exclusive: Walk Like A Duck Entertainment and Renegade Entertainment have entered into a two-picture financing and co-production deal, tapping veteran second unit director, stunt choreographer and fight coordinator Chris Brewster as the director for the first film under the deal, titled Relentless. The deal follows Wlad’s participation in Renegade’s recently released features Dig and Slayers, starring Renegade principal Thomas Jane.
Chris Brewster, Thomas Jane
Relentless is a Taken-style action-thriller in which Jane will play Charlie Thorne, a former U.S. Army Green Beret living off the grid who is forced back into action when smugglers steal his boat, leaving him for dead and attempting to kill a young girl he has befriended. In the cross-fire of warring crime gangs, Thorne re-enters battle, fighting to rescue the young girl, while combatting his own internal demons.

From Zeph in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Frank Castle in The Punisher to David Drayton in The Mist (based on the Stephen King novella of the same name) and Baxley in The Predator, Thomas Jane is no stranger to bringing compelling characters to life on screen in multiple genres. His role in the recent horror comedy Slayers is certainly no exception, as he plays Elliot Jones, a modern vampire hunter who lives in an Rv, researches bloodsucker conspiracy theories, and eventually teams up with video game influencer Flynn (Kara Hayward) to help take down a nefarious vampire empire.
With Slayers now on Digital and On Demand, we recently caught up with Thomas Jane to discuss acting in and executive producing the new vampire movie, and he also reflected on filming his memorable fight scene with Kevin Nash in The Punisher and being a part of the gut-punch ending of The Mist.

Photo: ‘Slayers’ For anyone needing to lower their blood pressure from their horror movie binge this spooky season, ‘Slayers’ is the unserious horror-comedy that'll provide you some respite. Directed by K. Asher Levin, who has producer credits on ‘Cougars Inc.’ and ‘Dig’, ‘Slayers’ entertains with its exaggerated interpretation of how the media-obsessed today would handle a spontaneous battle for their lives against a vampire syndicate. Although the film’s humor strikes as a long-running “dad-joke” attempting a little too hard to blend with gen-z culture, the film offers some amusing beats and a talented cast that were notably having fun with their roles. My suggestion in digesting this film would be to grab some friends, maybe some drinks, and go into this expecting a witty slasher. I was lucky enough to chat with both Thomas Jane and Malin Akerman about their upcoming Vampire comedy, Slayers. In this day and age, vampire stories have been told time and time again and rarely do they have any kind of originality. Thankfully, Slayers has a new take on them that makes the rules around them much more interesting. Then there’s Thomas Jane’s Elliot Jones character who may just be my favorite vampire hunter of the last decade and we’ve got the recipe for a fun time at the movies. So join me for my fun conversation with the two actors where we dive into the film.

The recent release of television shows like Let the Right One In and Interview with the Vampire, as well as movies like Day Shift and The Invitation, prove that stories about vampires will always be in style. Our obsession with social media like Instagram and TikTok has made it possible for almost anyone with a camera and a platform to become a celebrity, so Influencer culture is also very much in style right now. When you take a group of influencers and force them to battle a vampire syndicate, you have the recipe for a modern horror comedy.
Written by Zack Imbrogno (The Shadow Diaries) and K. Asher Levin, and directed by Levin, Slayers tells the story of a self-proclaimed vampire hunter named Elliot Jones, played by Thomas Jane, who teams up with a clueless, spoiled group of YouTube celebrities who are being targeted by what Elliot describes as the vampire illuminati.

Plot: A vampire slayer targets billionaire bloodsuckers who have lured a group of social media influencers to their remote compound.
Review: Just one month after the theatrical and VOD release of the thriller Dig, which was directed by K. Asher Levin and starred Thomas Jane, we’re getting the theatrical and VOD release of another Levin / Jane collaboration… and this one is quite different from their previous one. The new(er) movie is a horror comedy called Slayers, which finds Jane taking on the role of experienced vampire slayer Elliot Jones. The narration from Jones informs us that vampires have existed since the dawn of time – and humans have been secretly warring against them for thousands of centuries. While Jones has been in the slayer game for a couple decades at this point, he’s just one of the latest slayers in a long line of them, including some major historical figures.

"It's vamp time." The Avenue has unveiled an official trailer for a film titled Slayers, yet another vampire hunters film out this year (to go along with Day Shift and V for Vengeance). In the indie horror comedy film, a kick ass vampire slayer is out to avenge his daughter, killed viciously by a vampire, and must team up with a superstar influencer content house called 'The Street Team' that will help him take his revenge before the vamp scum can take their necks and bodies. This is a tame red band trailer but they say: "Warning! Not for the faint of heart of those who faint at the sight of blood." This vampire slayers film stars Thomas Jane, Kara Hayward, Jack Donnelly, Lydia Hearst, Malin Akerman, Abigail Breslin. It all looks like a mashup of streaming keywords and every bad idea from the worst movies nowadays thrown into a basket of forgettable vampire fun.

Melvins will reinterpret their own catalog and showcase some new covers on the grunge giant’s massive new Five Legged Dog, a 36-track LP that doubles as the group’s first-ever acoustic album.
“I knew I wanted to do something ridiculously big. Thirty-six songs reimagined by us acoustically is certainly ridiculous but it works! The magic of the songs is still there regardless of it being acoustic,” Buzz Osbourne said in a statement of the pandemic-recorded album.
“Since we weren’t touring we had the time to do something of this size.

Sammie would not win mother of the year. At various points in With Teeth (out June 1), she takes to imbibing at her son Samson's school swim practice, smashing his creepy-but-prized childhood doll on purpose, and generally failing to connect with him in any meaningful way.
