Ken Jeong appears in this episode as Mike's co-worker, Grover. Showrunner Tim Doyle and show writers Paul O'Toole, Andy St. Clair and Mary Fitzgerald all wrote episodes for Jeong's ABC sitcom "Dr. Ken."
According to show-runner Tim Doyle, one of most difficult things he tried to depict on the show was the truth about chemistry sets - a box of dangerous toxic chemicals sold widely as a learning toy for children back in the day. These kits would be unimaginable now but they were everywhere in the 1970s and - as the show tried to demonstrate - contained ingredients with which you could easily make poisons and explosives. Of course any effort to accurately depict this reality was resisted by the bosses at ABC, always worried about the portrayal of "dangerous replicable behavior" which might result in some kid somehow losing a finger. Their position was sensible but frustrating. After various rewrites they ended up with a version of Timmy and Joey trying to make a bomb which was silly but okay - but not nearly doing justice to the wonderful reality of actual childhood chemistry sets.
