I was looking for the magical musical moments and finally found them here
What made watching the original anime such a euphoric experience was the feeling that the storytelling encapsulated, that is the editing. But most of all the intentional and slick weaving of the music into the scenes/dialogue/story - the magical musical moments - as well as the quiet details and visuals that add depth to the characters. The first two episodes made me veeery skeptical of this live action adaptation, the first one more than the second - i found that they brought in cowboy bebop elements but with a lack of caution that made them cheap and soulless, and the use of jazz often feel arbitrary/generic!!! (see: the way they used "See you space cowboy' as a sort of 'to be continued' in the first episode whereas the anime demonstrated its power as a seal to respect the taste of each episode, hello?!)(however, the scene in ep2 shared with Teddy in that bluish light did successfully capture the cowboy bebop feeling so that's an exception). In this episode though, there were finally moments that gave me the euphoria that is so particular to cowboy bebop, the show that claims to be a genre in itself. The directing, I'd argue, is much more in tune with the feeling of cowboy bebop - not the anime, but the genre! The shots really captured the feeling (and not just the angular ones) instead of making the settings seem clunky or weirdly realistic, there WERE perfect magical musical moments and the use of music was smoother and felt more deliberate, the fighting choreography was way more natural, there were slick/exciting editing moments that weren't at all excessive, there was sufficient space(!) given for those VITAL quiet/mellow and witty moments where cowboy bebop really breathes (see: when spike was hanging off the ledge and took a smoke break). I think a test that episodes of the live adaptation would have to pass is if it would make any sense with Seatbelt's music, not necessarily to be more like the anime, but just to make sure there's soul in them. (Also, why is the whole syndicate narrative in the forefront? But that's another matter that I hope plays out eventually.) Anyways. Deliberate musical moments and witty quiet ones, that's the way to go! In other words, the next episodes better tell the story with feeling.
