- Debra Choi's life hasn't turned out the way she had either hoped or envisioned. With a head for numbers, she wanted to be an accountant, but life circumstances led her into working as a stripper and sex worker. She believed one of the club's customers, called Sarge for being in the military when she met him, would be her savior, especially being excited about the prospect of being a father when she became pregnant with his child. But ten years later, Sarge, a gambler, has only been a sporadic presence in Debra and their daughter Mona's lives. Mona idolizes Sarge in being the fun parent whenever he is around, and while Debra probably knows that Sarge will never come through with any of his promises of a better life for the three of them, she is still emotionally attached to him in that rose-colored glasses view of what their lives could be. Debra taking online courses in bookkeeping is the first step in trying to eke out a better life for herself and Mona. But pressures, such as reliance on Sarge for money to pay the rent, that money which never materializes placing Debra at the near point of eviction, and often having no child care options for Mona leading to Mona needing to fend for herself and in the process often doing what children do when they have minimal supervision, which is to get into trouble, threaten Debra and Mona's lives in Debra looking like she may not be able to make the transition as she deals with the consequences of those pressures.—Huggo
