Laysla De Oliveira will star alongside Zoe Saldaña in the upcoming Paramount Plus series “Lioness” from Taylor Sheridan, Variety has learned exclusively.
The series is based on a real-life CIA program and follows Cruz Manuelos (De Oliveira), described as a rough-around-the-edges but passionate young Marine, who is recruited to join the CIA’s Lioness Engagement Team to help bring down a terrorist organization from within. Saldaña will play Joe, the station chief of the Lioness program tasked with training, managing and leading her female undercover operatives. The series is set to go into production in June.
De Oliveira currently stars in the Netflix series “Locke & Key,” with the third season of that series set to debut later in 2022. She has also previously starred in films such as “In the Tall Grass,” “Guest of Honour,” “Needle in a Timestack,” and “Code 8.”
She is repped by Gersh, Wright Entertainment Inc.

The actor on his new novel about an irascible director, his faux-feud with Christopher Eccleston and his ‘secret’ marriage
Blackpool-born David Thewlis, 58, studied acting at Guildhall school of music and drama. His breakout role was the lead in Mike Leigh’s 1993 film Naked, for which he won the best actor award at Cannes. Subsequent film credits include The Big Lebowski, Wonder Woman and I’m Thinking of Ending Things. He played Professor Remus Lupin in five Harry Potter films and, on TV, was Emmy-nominated for Fargo. His second novel is now being published.

Principal photography will commence in March across the U.S. Highland Film Group is handling international rights and introducing the project to buyers at the virtual European Film Market.
“Gasoline Alley” centers on Jimmy Jayne (Sawa), a bruised-fisted rockabilly boss-type sucked into a triple murder of three Hollywood starlets drowned in a luxury hotel pool. As the prime suspect for homicide detectives Freeman (Willis) and Vargas (Wilson), Jimmy takes up his own rogue investigation, bending the law in ways the police can’t in order to clear his name. With the killer skating through Jimmy’s shadow, he bands together with the two detectives to dangerously expose a truth much bigger than they had imagined.

David Thewlis as health inspector Jim Davis in Atom Egoyan’s absorbing Guest Of Honour
Guest Of Honour is the story of restaurant health inspector Jim Davis (David Thewlis) and his daughter Veronica (Laysla De Oliveira), a high school music teacher who finds herself in prison. Anything but linear, the film touches on many aspects of social interactions that a year ago seemed normal. Restaurants in Atom Egoyan’s movie are fighting not to be shut down, because for some that would mean the end of their existence.
Anne-Katrin Titze: Guest of Honour leaves many gaps so that I in the audience felt a bit like the child Veronica [Isabelle Franca, as an adult played by Laysla De Oliveira] trying to figure out what is going on with the adults. How can I put these puzzle pieces together? Am I missing something? Am I making things up? Which is great...

Throughout his sixteen feature films, prolific Toronto-based, Egyptian-born filmmaker Atom Egoyan has explored obsession, modern technology, fragmented families, the unreliability of memory, and multicultural tensions embodied within Canada. His latest film, Guest of Honour, recalls his earlier films––including Family Viewing, Speaking Parts, The Adjuster, and Exotica––in a story featuring David Thewlis as a food inspector and Laysla De Oliveria as his adult child, wrongfully convicted of a crime she did not commit but agrees to serve the time for, in order to atone for other sins.
An intimate thriller told through the unreliable memories of its protagonist’s daughter, Guest of Honour is now available via Kino Marquee, supporting Virtual Cinemas. We spoke to Egoyan about the inspirations behind hiis latest film, launching at Venice and TIFF last year, and its place in his career spanning three and a half decades since his first feature, 1984’s Next of Kin.

The Beach House (Jeffrey A. Brown)
There’s a lot to like about Jeffrey A. Brown’s feature directorial debut The Beach House, from its gorgeous production design to its ruminations on mankind’s fragility when compared with Mother Nature’s hardier offerings (despite our penchant for believing we hold dominion over Her). It’s therefore easy to appreciate the reason Emily (Liana Liberato), Randall (Noah Le Gros), Mitch (Jake Weber), and Jane (Maryanne Nagel) have arrived at a site that may end up being their tomb because we’re quick to ignore the baked-in irony too. This was supposed to be an escape from life’s struggles—a...

One of the conversation points in our lengthy, enjoyable chat with David Thewlis, is hoping not to be let down when you meet one of your idols (referring to a time he met The Jam frontman Paul Weller). Incidentally, this was also true of this very interview, for we’re very big fans of the actor, and we certainly weren’t left disappointed after this engaging, entertaining conversation.
Thewlis is promoting his latest film Guest of Honour, where he plays an introverted food hygiene officer who becomes hellbent on securing his daughter’s release from prison. We discuss the character, his research visiting restaurants, and how he’s adapted to life in lockdown. We also ask for an update on Avatar 2 – which he has already shot – as he gives us a little information on his time spent, and whether we may be expecting him back for even more.

Only David Thewlis’s committed portrayal of a father haunted by the past saves Atom Egoyan’s strained tale of poisoned lives
David Thewlis stars here, and it is only the absolute conviction of his performance that saves this from being an utter misfire – a misfire of the sort that, sadly, the once great film-maker Atom Egoyan keeps on giving us. As it is, Guest of Honour is merely a bafflingly strained and unconvincing melodrama with some awful acting. It also has to be said that this has worrying echoes of Egoyan’s excruciating 2008 film Adoration in that both feature a teacher who gets her pupils into a really dangerous situation but never shows the smallest guilt, and behaves as if she is sorrowingly pained by other people’s moral failings.

It’s difficult to explain the premise of “Guest of Honour” without getting too much into spoiler-y territory. Suffice it to say, the new film is a complicated, emotional family drama that follows the lives of a father and his daughter, a music teacher that finds herself on the wrong side of the law due to hoax. And judging by the new trailer, the film should be one that you make sure to see as soon as it hits a theater or digital avenue near you.

Atom Egoyan (Exotica and The Sweet Hereafter) is back after five years with the thriller Guest of Honour starring David Thewlis (Naked), Laysla De Oliveria (Locke & Key), and Luke Wilson (The Royal Tenenbaums). While Kino Lorber recently picked up the film, which premiered on the fall festival circuit last year, for a North American release, the first international trailer has now arrived.
In the story, Veronica (De Oliveria) has been wrongfully convicted of sexually abusing a seventeen-year-old student and she has been sentenced to prison. However, she convinced she deserves the punishment as penance for an earlier crime in her youth and refuses to fight the charges. Jim (Thewlis), Veronica’s father, refuses to accept this course of action and utilizes his power as a food inspector to right certain wrongs.

As a life-long appreciator of Atom Egoyan–trust me on this one–Guest of Honour is one of his stranger pictures veering occasionally into the territory of dark comedy. While his later works (especially Remember and Captive) have yet to reach a return to the emotional resonance of his back-to-back masterpieces Exotica and The Sweet Hererafter, his latest film is a scrappy Southern Ontario indie that actually harkens back to his earliest work that kicked off the so-called Toronto New Wave, including Next of Kin, The Adjuster, and Speaking Parts. The film itself is a mystery buried deeper than it ought to be in a confessional as Veronica (Laysla De Oliveira) sits down with Father Greg (Luke Wilson) to discuss the passing of her father Jim (David Thewlis). She notes his motivations were often very strange–as if we’d come to expect anything else in an Atom Egoyan picture.

Luke Wilson is embarking on a completely new character for his latest movie.
The actor, 47, stars as the priest Father Greg in the upcoming drama Guest of Honour, which screened at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Wilson admitted the role was a departure for him in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
“Putting on the clothes of a priest doesn’t necessarily feel that natural to me, but you kind of turn around and look in the mirror and get kind of startled,” he said, laughing.
He continued, “I feel like I’ve definitely met people like that, actual priests, very...

What a strange, strange film this is. Egyptian-Canadian filmmaker Atom Egoyan has returned the festival circuit again with another peculiar feature film, this new one titled Guest of Honour (the extra "u" still included because this is the Canadian title and they use British English up there) which premiered at the Venice Film Festival. The film focuses on a father-daughter relationship and the various events that have lead them to the situation they're currently in - the daughter is in prison, the father is lonely and frustrated. And despite his attempts to secure her early release, she isn't interested and intends to stay in prison. It's an odd study in guilt, various layers of it and different characters that must deal with it, but it never amounts to much. And the filmmaking feels so slight and unexciting that it's just more puzzling than satisfying to watch. The two main characters...

Atom Egoyan’s cryptic drama about a man and his imprisoned daughter is a frustrating reminder of the director’s talents
Atom Egoyan and David Thewlis, two wayward stars of the 90s, make a valiant effort to stoke the embers of past glories in Guest of Honour, an elaborate, time-slipping thriller about the sins of the past and the moral quandaries of the present. I’m not convinced it amounts to any more than the sum of its parts, but the parts are intriguing – and some are possessed of real power.
Thewlis plays Jim Davis, a health inspector whose soft-spoken, unsmiling demeanour is either indicative of intense professionalism or creeping depression. He’s travelling between the restaurants of Toronto, identifying a hair in the food here, a rat dropping there, all the while pondering the crimes of his adult daughter Veronica (Laysla De Oliveira), who has landed in jail after...

It would take more explaining than the film merits to articulate why deep-fried rabbit ears are briefly a plot point in “Guest of Honour,” but so they are: The camera grazes over a platter of the oval-shaped delicacies, looking invitingly golden-crumbed and crunchy, and for a second any reservations you might have about the unusual menu item fall away. , in which a frayed father-daughter bond yields all manner of secondary indiscretions and traumas over a wildly careering 15-year timeframe. Incorporating stray narrative and thematic elements from Egoyan’s earlier (and far better) films into an odd kind of self-pastiche, this unwelcome “Guest” serves only to remind viewers how the director’s gifts have withered.
An Atom bomb even by his unreliable recent standards, “Guest of Honour” does, however, extend Egoyan’s mystifying run of major European competition berths for shaky genre pieces of limited artistic ambition. While the combination of...

, Atom Egoyan’s “Guest of Honour” layers one absurd turn on top of another with the confidence of a veteran architect, and yet — even at its most perversely entertaining — this very unpredictable movie only feels as if it’s working in spite of itself.
Egoyan, a Canadian filmmaker who found success at a young age with hits like “Speaking Parts” and “The Sweet Hereafter,” has long been fascinated by intimate stories about how painful truths come to light — but he’s never followed that process down such a bizarre path before. Few people have. After all, it takes a special kind of auteur to piece together a plot that starts with some illegal sexting, contains several different montages of David Thewlis using a meat thermometer, and splinters a tale of guilt and shame into so many parallel timelines that the whole thing feels like a soap opera directed by Christopher Nolan.

At some point or another, children come to realize that their parents are merely human beings, and there are things in their lives that these adults have hidden from them. In “Guest of Honour,” director Atom Egoyan tells the story of a father and daughter who discover that they don’t know as much about each other that they think they do.
Sitting across from a priest, Veronica Davis (Laysla de Oliveira) is asked to remember her difficult relationship with her recently deceased father (David Thewlis).

His family dynamic begins to impact his work, as he makes weekly prison visits to see his daughter Veronica (Laysla De Oliveira), a high-school music teacher who was punished for a hoax on the school bus driver that went too far.

Over the last few days, many of the upcoming film festivals in the fall have announced which titles will be playing within their respective showcases. Two in question have specifically revealed what they’re packing. The first is the Toronto International Film Festival, while the other is the Venice Film Festival. Interestingly, these revelations actually inform which movies are likely to play at the Telluride Film Festival, and in turn, that helps fill in some possible blanks for the New York Film Festival. Suffice it to say, there are a lot of moving parts right now. Moves are being made, that’s for sure. The highlights of the recent announcements include a number of crossovers, as well as some exclusives. You can see which are which below, but just a sampling of the films include Ad Astra, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, Dolemite Is My Name, Ford v Ferrari,...

Over the past few years, the Venice Film Festival has become a magnet for awards-season hopefuls, having hosted world premieres of three of the past five Best Picture Oscar winners. This year again, there is no shortage of big-ticket titles that we’re likely to be talking about for the next six months. In what’s beginning to look like another recurring theme, fest chief Alberto Barbera has shown he is not one to shy away from controversy.
After becoming the first major fest boss to embrace Netflix back in 2015, he is already facing criticism from European cinema groups for putting three of the streamer’s movies in the lineup that was announced today. The fest also has a pretty lousy track record with female directors. While Barbera did increase the number of women in competition by 100%, that means there are two this year versus one last year. Roman Polanski’s “J’Accuse,” Todd Phillips’ “Joker,” Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story” and Steven Soderbergh’s “The Laundromat” are among the films that will screen at the 2019 Venice International Film Festival, Venice organizers announced at a press conference in Rome on Thursday.
This will mark Polanski’s first appearance at a major festival since his May 2018 expulsion from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, with the decision by the AMPAS Board of Governors referencing his 1978 guilty plea to a charge of statutory rape.
“J’Accuse,” which had been screening for buyers under the title “An Officer and a Spy,” is his dramatization of the Alfred Dreyfus scandal in 19th century France, and has been considered by some, sight unseen, as a comment of sorts on the #MeToo movement.

We’re just a few weeks away from the annual unveiling of the Cannes Film Festival lineup, and, as ever, speculation is running high about what will and won’t strut down the Croisette from May 14-25. Also as usual, nothing is set in stone until fest chief Thierry Frémaux makes the announcement. However, we’ve been able to glean some intel into what’s likely to be in store for the official selection — and what is not.
Regarding the big-ticket titles, the one on everyone’s lips is Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.
