One For My Baby

Here's. "Why can't a woman make up her mind" to music. Well, that's a question that's not going to be satisfied soon, not with the bars closed and no sympathetic bartender drying shot glasses at 3AM to listen. I'm sure the Internet has the answer, lost in a zillion loud and angry opinions.

This is a picture with sound from 1908. That will astonish those of you who think that Al Jolson invented sound a couple of decades later, but in truth not only had theyre been tests of sound-and-film recordings more than a decade earlier, Edison had speculated on the subject before his labs had gotten a moving picture. He foresaw a recording -- an Edison cylinder, naturally --synchronized to a film. That -- using a disc, rather than a cylinder -- was how these sound films were produced, from several companies, from about 1906 until 1914.Then they vanished due to technical problems, for another ten years, although people kept working on them.
