Two new Australian films, both enjoying their world premiere, are among the first titles confirmed to play at the Sydney Film Festival in June.
“In Vitro,” a sci-fi mystery thriller set on a remote cattle farm in the near future, hails from directors Will Howarth and Tom McKeith (“Beast”) and stars Ashley Zukerman (“Succession”).
With “The Pool,” director Ian Darling (“The Final Quarter”) paints a cinematic portrait of a year in the life of the iconic Bondi Icebergs, the pool and the people who cherish it.
They will be joined by New Zealand actor Rachel House (“Hunt for the Wilderpeople”), who makes her feature directorial debut with “The Mountain,” which centers on three children discovering friendship’s healing power through the spirit of adventure as they trek through spectacular New Zealand landscapes. It is executive produced by Taika Waititi and will be eligible for Sydney’s recently announced First Nations Award,...

“This documentary is just to try and get some of the information down on film somewhere, before it’ll scatters away,” admits Devo’s Mark Mothersbaugh of the documentary about the band that premieres at the Sundance Film Festival tonight. “I just like the idea that this information is being collected,” the front man adds.
In a festival full of music documentaries this year on legends like Luther Vandross, Brian Eno and the star studded 1985 recording of “We Are the World,” the Chris Smith directed Devo may hit even a little bit closer to home. After all, the film represents a return to Park City for the band. Back in 1996, Devo was the off-screen closing act of sorts to that year’s Sundance Film Festival. Goodbye, Christmas and New Year’s. Hello, awards season!
The Golden Globes are upon us, and that means the festivities kick off with W Magazine’s annual Friday night soiree toasting its Best Performances Issue. Expect to see well-heeled, A-List celebrities mix and mingle elbow-to-elbow in the penthouse suite of the Chateau Marmont.
That same evening, Jon Hamm, Willem Dafoe and Wilmer Valderrama will be among the celebs at the Golden Globes Foundation Dinner helping to present $5 million in grant awards to 96 non-profits.
In the past, studios and networks threw lavish affairs in separate ballrooms at the Beverly Hilton immediately following the Globes, but things have slowed down in recent years due to the Covid pandemic and controversies that rocked the HFPA. Instead, there are smaller affairs being thrown at venues throughout Los Angeles in the nights leading up to the Globes and immediately following the big show.

Veteran actor Nana Patekar was offered a role in Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio-starrer ‘Body Of Lies’. However, he declined it because he did not like the role that was offered to him. ‘Body of Lies’ is a 2008 American spy action thriller film directed and produced by Ridley Scott starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe in the lead roles.
Set in the Middle East, it follows the attempts of the CIA and the Gid of Jordan to catch “al-Saleem”, a terrorist. Frustrated by their target’s elusiveness, differences in their approaches strain relations between a CIA operative, his superior, and the head of Jordanian Intelligence.
Asked in a media chat why he said no to Hollywood movies even though offers kept coming his way, Nana said: “It was because I did not have confidence about delivering the dialogues in English. I don’t have that fluency. I could have memorised that and done that anyway.

It’s only delightful to witness the attention Linda Evangelista receives when she arrives at any event these days: The legendary supermodel and breast cancer survivor has been enjoying a public comeback that began to roll out slowly when she appeared on the cover of British Vogue in 2022, but ramped up to klieg light level when she was joined by Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington and Naomi Campbell on the September 2023 cover of American Vogue. What does Evangelista think about this sudden burst of attention and adulation? “That I should’ve left the house sooner!” she exclaimed with a laugh to The Hollywood Reporter at Tuesday night’s Kering’s Second Annual Caring for Women Dinner at The Pool in New York City.
The annual fundraiser, produced by the Kering Group to benefit a trio of women-focused causes, was more than enough reason to venture out, she added. “I have felt so much love this week,...

While Germany wasn’t a significant contributor during the first revival of slasher movies, its few offerings are an interesting time capsule. These movies show how the country interpreted the subgenre during its postmodern era. Of all the homegrown German efforts from the early 2000s, The Pool (also known as Swimming Pool: Der Tod feiert mit) perhaps brings up the most nostalgia despite its vanishing act over the years. Boris von Sychowski’s vaguely remembered slasher didn’t make a huge splash back then, although that wasn’t from a lack of trying.
German slasher The Pool is openly set in Prague, yet the English dialogue, the rampant Hollywood movie clichés, and the generic pop-rock soundtrack all make American audiences feel more at home. The glaring Czech architecture and various accents, however, are constant reminders that the characters themselves are far from home. The adults and authority figures are either...

This month’s installment of Deep Cuts Rising features a variety of horror movies. Some selections reflect a specific day or event in July, and others were chosen at random.
Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s offerings feature a giant monster bug, home invaders, a zombie boy, a killer videographer, and a water spirit.
Blue Monkey (1987)
Directed by William Fruet.
As its name suggests, Pandemonium Day (July 14) is all about bedlam. And William Fruet’s Canadian tax-shelter movie Blue Monkey (a.k.a. Insect!) is as chaotic as they come. Originally called “Green Monkey” at one point, this movie’s final title is still a misnomer; there are no monkeys here. Instead, the characters battle a deadly parasite inside a quarantined hospital.

Best Play is always a crowded field thanks to a slew of limited engagements that pepper the Broadway calendar, and this season is no different. 18 new works will attempt to be singled out as one of the five nominees.

Screen Australia has announced more than $2.5 million in production funding for 12 documentaries; five through the commissioned program, six through the Producer program and one via the Indigenous department.
The agency also re-confirmed today that the existing documentary guidelines, including Pep, will remain in place until the end of 2020-21.
Despite consulting widely with the sector as to how to revamp the programs back in 2019, Screen Australia made the decision back in April to delay changes given the disruption of Covid-19 on the sector. A timeline for rolling out the new guidelines is expected in due course.
Among the projects announced today include a number exploring the recent devastating bushfire season, including ABC series Rebuilding Mallacoota, online doco Black Summer, and feature The Front from director Eddie Martin, which will weave user-generated first hand footage with news coverage.
The project funded via the Indigenous department is the recently announced Nitv feature documentary Incarceration Nation.

Stars: Theeradej Wongpuapan, Ratnamon Ratchiratham | Written and Directed by Ping Lumpraploeng
I have been very excited about seeing The Pool for a long time. The poster and initial images I saw were impressive and I have always loved the idea of movies set in one small location. Whether it be Phone Booth, Man On A Ledge, Ryan Reynold’s in Buried or genre movies like Pontypool and Exam. Even my favourite movie, The Breakfast Club, could be included in the same niche genre.
So a guy stuck in an emptied swimming pool with a crocodile had me jumping for joy…
That sounds like a pretty small idea for an hour and a half movie but do not worry, writer and director Ping Lumpraploeng has a lot of ideas to fill the time. Almost every one of these ideas are ways to torture the lead character Day, played by Theeradej Wongpuapan.

Films which feature characters trapped in simple but wildly unlucky situations go one of two ways. Either the characters are so relentlessly stupid that one wishes they would just hurry up and die, or they're so ingenious and determined that they become fascinating to watch - especially as the film then has to work extra hard to keep them trapped despite that. Happily, The Pool is the latter type of film. Though conceptually slight, it has an appealing put-upon hero in Day (Theeradej Wongpuapan) and a constant flow of ideas to keep up the pace.
We first meet Day when he's working on a film set - a production based around a swimming pool, in which his trained dog Lucky is also a participant. Through a series of complicated circumstances - more convincingly played out than you might expect - he and his girlfriend Koi (Ratnamon Ratchiratham) become trapped in the.

I’d never heard of this gem of a British production; now it goes on my list of highly recommended titles. A dock area on the Thames is ‘the pool,’ and the sailors that disembark from the cargo ships are susceptible to the temptations of black market trade. A single eventful weekend traces the fates of a half-dozen young people, the women that like the sailors, and the sailor that gets mixed up in a deadly serious crime. Director Basil Dearden’s excellent cast is mostly unfamiliar to us Yanks, but we get really tied up in their problems. This picture should be much better known. It’s the first English movie to depict an interracial romance, and it does so without sensationalism or special pleading. The best new extra is an interview with actor Earl Cameron, who at 103 years of age has his act (and his memories) totally together.

Occasionally, artists experience a creative low point in their careers, usually linked to a personal crisis or a feeling of being stuck. In an interview with HollywoodChicago Thai director and actor Ping Lumpraploeng states it was this kind of crisis which inspired his script for “The Pool”, a blend of drama and thriller. He considers the situation of the characters, while certainly exaggerated, a reflection of his feelings ten years ago, but also his drive to escape this emotional dead end. Given the personal connection of the story, Lumpraploeng decided, as with many of his other films, to focus on a minimal setting and the internal struggles of his characters faced with an extreme situation.
Even though he has been working for many years within the film industry, the job of art director Day (Theeradej Wongpuapan) has not become less demanding. Indeed, the opposite is true, since,...

Chicago – Season Nine of Chicago’s Asian Pop-Up Cinema (Apuc) celebrates Thailand and the Philippines this week, and starts off with the tense thriller “The Pool” (Thailand), on Wednesday, October 2nd, 2019 (7pm) at the AMC River East 21 Theatre. Director Ping Lumpraloeng will appear on behalf of the film. For more info and tickets, click here.
“The Pool” involves a couple stuck in the desolated title location that is twenty feet (six meters) deep … they’re stuck without food/water, a ladder or a way out, and somehow need to survive. To make matters more challenging, an unfriendly amphibian is teetering on the brink of joining them. “The Pool” is Ping Lumpraplerng’s fourth film, and features Thai superstar Ken Theeradeth Wonpuapan, who returns to big screen for the first time in nine years. It won the Critic’s Prize at the 2019 Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival.

Is there anything more sneakily heartbreaking than the passage of time?
There’s a sequence at the end of this week’s This Is Us that I found suddenly, devastatingly heartbreaking. Before you worry too much: No one died. No one broke up. No one revealed a terrible diagnosis or anything of the sort. The visual simply showed us The Big Three as little kids, curled up for a nap with their dad during Season 1’s “The Pool.” Then it juxtaposed that with a shot of the kids as preteens, each sitting on his or her own lounger, completely disinterested...

The festival has already announced that Extraordinary, Sword of God and Something Else will play at the festival. Today they announced three more, another tease of what is to come this year. Lee Won-tae's Korean horror thriller The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil will thrill audiences. A dose of Canadian content arrives with Audrey Cummings' She Never Died, the sequel to He Never Died. And rounding of this new trio is an action-horror from Thailand called The Pool that sounds so silly it might just work. A couple gets...
