- Quotes
[Korvo and Terry burst into their replicants' bedroom as they're performing a vivisection on their school classmate/bully, Lydia]
Korvo: Have you guys seen the shrink ray? It's usually in the cupboard with the ice cream maker we never use.
Terry: Hey, I use it to freeze and eat yogurt.
Korvo: *scoffs*
Jesse: This is so embarrassing.
Terry: Why are you dissecting your classmate?
Yumyulack: Despite having been examined by countless scientists over hundreds of years, the human brain is still a mystery.
Jesse: Plus, she was being mean to us at school.
Lydia: Everyone is mean to them. I didn't invent it.
Yumyulack: School sucks, okay? We don't like it.
Korvo: It doesn't matter if you like it. We're on a mission. When things don't go your way, you can't just give in to emotion and do whatever you want like make a new Funbucket.
Yumyulack: What?
Korvo: Uh, you can't shrink people.
Jesse: We weren't going to kill her. We were just reprogramming her a little.
Yumyulack: Are we in trouble?
Korvo: We will discuss your grounding later. Sew her up and let her go.
Lydia: Your grounding is going to be prison for the rest of your lives. And let me tell you, being a weird alien in jail is not going to be pretty.
[Terry comes over and pours diet cola over Lydia's exposed brain]
Lydia: . *groans* Whose ass was I gonna kick again?
Terry: [to replicants] Just keep doing that until she's cool.
Lydia: Someone's going to prison!
[more diet cola is poured on her brain]
Lydia: . Someone's - I'm a sunflower.
Jesse: Wow, it really is making her dumber. I can't believe humans drink this stuff.
[pours more on Lydia's brain]
Yumyulack: This would be going a lot faster if we had some Mountain Dew.
- ConnectionsReferences The Outer Limits (1963)
Going in, I feared that Roiland's humor, without Dan Harmon's strong sense of story to guide it, may have resulted in a somewhat senselessly ridiculous experience that's funny, but nothing else (think an Interdimensional Cable skit). and while this shows appeal mostly begins and ends with its humor, the situations of each episode is zany and interesting enough, with some smart writing to keep it engaging and substantial.
This show is inevitably going to be unfairly compared to Rick & Morty (hell, I've already done it in this review), and for that reason, I fear people may be disappointed that this isn't as conceptual or philosophical as Roiland's other show.
The thing is, Solar Opposites is its own beast and while it may not be life-changing, Roiland's style of zany humor will probably more than enough to keep you thoroughly entertained each episode.
