The streaming gods have smiled on Percy Jackson and the Olympians.
The Disney+ series based on author Rick Riordan’s best-selling books opened to a good-sized audience in the week before Christmas. The first two episodes, which debuted the evening of Dec. 19, drew about 572 million minutes of watch time, according to Nielsen’s streaming ratings. With a combined run time of 80 minutes, that works out to about 7.15 million complete runs (or “views” as currently defined by much of the industry) of the two episodes in the United States.
Disney had earlier said that the first episode had earned 13.3 million views worldwide — equivalent to a little more than 505 million minutes — over its first six days. The Nielsen figures for the premiere put Percy Jackson ahead of Disney+’s last two Marvel premieres, Secret Invasion (461 million minutes) and season two of Loki (446 million), in total viewing time.
Prime Video’s Reacher moved up to the overall No.

Netflix has taken peak TV to a new peak.
In a data point sure to fuel more quantity-versus-quality debate, Netflix broke its own record for number of original episodes released in a single quarter — with 1,026 in the third quarter of 2022, according to a tally by Wall Street firm MoffettNathanson.
That’s more than five times any other streaming rival: Amazon Prime Video and Hulu released 223 and 194 episodes, respectively, and Disney+ debuted 140 original episodes, per the report. HBO Max, now owned by Warner Bros. Discovery, released 114 episodes in the third quarter — significantly fewer episodes than usual and comprising the lightest slate for the service since Q2 2020, the second quarter after launch. Wbd has been paring back HBO Max’s content slate in recent months as it looks to cut costs.
All told, Netflix premiered 159 original and exclusive shows in Q3, topping its previous high-water mark of 143 in Q4 2021 (which totaled nearly...

President Trump has retreated from his claim that the country could return to something like normal by Easter, and extended social distancing recommendations through the end of April. With cases and deaths very much on the rise, it seems reasonable to believe that social distancing will continue until those numbers are in real decline. So while Warner Bros. switched the highly anticipated “Wonder Woman 1984” from June 5 to August 14, it remains to be seen if that will represent foresight or wishful thinking.
