Jasper Basch, director of sales and distribution for IFC Films, is leaving at week’s end to become Variance Films’ new head of distribution, marking the third high-profile departure for the indie studio in two weeks.
Basch began his career at Variance, eventually becoming manager of distribution. His exit follows those of former president Arianna Bacco and former SVP and Gm of IFC Center John Vanco.
Basch joined IFC in 2020, where he oversaw 30 releases per year. This included a slew of overperforming titles in the summer of 2020, where mostly-closed theaters and mostly delayed tentpoles left the box office dominated by drive-in flicks like “The Wretched” and “The Rental.” During this time, he also handled theatrical distribution for Shudder and Rlje Films. As recently as January of 2023, he helped push the microbudget horror sleeper “‘Skinamarink” to $1.5 million in domestic earnings.

Bob Dylan and David Crosby met early in The Byrd’s career, and the two men remained friendly for years. Both men are known for their eccentric personalities and overall spikiness. They also recognized these traits in one another. Crosby described Dylan as “weird” and “crazy,” but he said it didn’t matter because he was a talented musician.

Crosby rose to success in The Byrds, but his bandmates cut his time with the group short, firing him in 1967. Some believe that this was due to disagreements over what songs to record, but Crosby set the record straight.
“Ladies and gentlemen, that’s not why they threw me out of The Byrds,” he said in the documentary Echo in the Canyon. “They threw me out of The Byrds because I was an a**hole.

Greenwich Entertainment has taken North American rights to dark comedy-drama “Concerned Citizen,” which had its world premiere in the Panorama section of the Berlinale. Salzgeber has taken the rights for Germany and Austria. Berlin-based sales outfit M-Appeal is selling the film.
Idan Haguel’s film, a satirical parable on the insidious ways in which privilege can unleash the prejudice within, centers on Ben, who thinks of himself as a liberal and enlightened gay man, living in the perfect apartment with his boyfriend Raz. All that’s missing to complete the picture is a baby, which the couple are trying to make a reality.
Meanwhile, Ben decides to improve his up-and-coming neighborhood in gritty south Tel Aviv by planting a new tree on his street. But his good deed soon triggers a sequence of events that leads to the brutal police arrest of an Eritrean immigrant. The guilt trip that ensues...

Questlove’s Summer of Soul is up to 753 theaters as the doc about the 1969 ‘Black Woodstock’ concert in Harlem that debuted in two locations last weekend crossed into arthouse, commercial and urban venues.
Not that it was easy, said Frank Rodriguez, SVP General Sales Manager, Searchlight Pictures. “Exhibitors are eager to get back on track,” he said. “We had to push very hard in a crowded marketplace” that includes The Boss Baby: Family Business, The Forever Purge and week two of the first true post-Covid blockbuster, F9.
Rodriguez cited notable performances in Brooklyn, San Francisco and Georgetown in D.C. after what was basically an extended promo in NY and LA. Deadline is hearing from industry estimates that Thursday night came in north of $78K.

On Tuesday, David Crosby declared to Howard Stern’s listeners that filmmaker Robert Zemeckis would be directing a documentary on Crosby, Stills & Nash, making possible use of “10,000 hours” of existing footage as well as fresh interviews. On Wednesday, that announcement got walked back a bit, with word that the tantalizing prospect of a full-on Csn doc is still only under discussion.
“They’re gonna do a huge documentary on Csn. You know about that, right?” Crosby asked Stern during their extensive SiriusXM interview, after the host had asked a number of questions about strained relations in the currently off-again supergroup. Crosby elaborated that the doc would be directed by Zemeckis and produced by Nigel Sinclair and Tim Sexton.
Asked Stern, “David, how can they do that without the three of you guys getting in the same room together?” — the near-impossibility of that having been just established.

Exclusive: All the Streets Are Silent, a documentary portrait of the skateboarding and hip-hop scenes in New York in the late 1980s and early ’90s, has been acquired by Greenwich Entertainment.
The U.S. rights deal precedes the film’s world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in June. The film will be released in theaters on July 23.
Jeremy Elkin is making his feature directing debut with All the Streets Are Silent, which is described as “a love letter to New York” blending elements of Paris Is Burning and Larry Clark’s Kids.
Between the city’s rebound from near-ruin in the 1970s and the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, Lower Manhattan was home to the thriving subcultures of skateboarding and hip-hop. Their convergence would give rise to modern street style. Eli Gesner, founder of skateboard gear and fashion brand Zoo York, will narrate the film. Hip-hop producer Large Professor, known...

“We think that if we have the right amount of money, we have the right amount of recognition, you’ll find perfect human happiness,” Moby says in the trailer. “But I tried, and it didn’t work.”
“My life as a musician has taken me to a lot of very odd places,” Moby added. “Sounds like hyperbole, but music saved me.”

Exclusive: Greenwich Entertainment announced Thursday it has acquired North American distribution rights to The Big Scary “S” Word, a feature documentary that “explores the rich history of the American socialist movement.”
The company plans a theatrical release on Friday, September 3—Labor Day Weekend—an auspicious date given the holiday’s historical ties to workers’ rights. The documentary marks the feature directorial debut of Yael Bridge, whose credits include producing the Emmy-nominated Saving Capitalism (2017).
“I feel so lucky to team up with Greenwich Entertainment with their incredible track record of bringing powerful films to the public,” Bridge remarked. “The timing of this release couldn’t be better, as we’re seeing a fundamental realignment in political thinking about the role of government and the need to work collectively, not just in order to thrive but literally to survive.”
Democratic socialism as a political philosophy has gained traction in the U.S.

Occasionally a high-profile film or TV documentary arrives at just the right time to appear as if it were created to address the frustrations created by another high-profile documentary, however coincidental the timing. That’s certainly the case with Alison Ellwood’s “Laurel Canyon,” a feature-length doc about the Los Angeles rock scene of the ‘60s and ‘70s that’s airing as a two-parter on Epix on May 31 and June 7. It’s not exactly an “answer song” to “Echo in the Canyon,” a much-debated 2018 theatrical release that covered a lot of the same ground, but it does address a few important questions left hanging by its predecessor. Like: “Where the hell was Joni Mitchell?” She’s in this one — there are two shots of her within the first minute of the credit sequence, to immediately reassure us there will be ladies of, and in, the canyon this time around.

Widely acknowledged as one of the greatest and most influential hard rock vocalists of all time, Dio fronted Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Elf, Heaven & Hell and his own eponymous band over the course of a 40-plus year-long career. He died from cancer in 2010 at the age of 67.

The Cinema Audio Society Awards gave a boost to the Oscar hopes of “Ford v Ferrari” on Saturday. This film about auto racing took top honors at these precursor prizes over two of its Oscar rivals for Best Sound Mixing — “Joker” and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” — as well as “Rocketman” and “The Irishman.” The sound branch of the academy snubbed those latter two films in favor of “1917” and “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.” Historically, about half of the Csa champs go on to claim victory at the Academy Awards.
“Toy Story 4″ won for best sound mixing in an animated feature over “Abominable,” “Frozen II,” “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” and “The Lion King.” And the documentary feature prize went to “Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound” over “Apollo 11,” “Echo in the Canyon,” “Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool” and “Woodstock: 3 Days That Changed Everything.

“Ford v Ferrari ” won the top prize, Sound Editing (Effects and Foley), at the Golden Reel Awards bestowed by the Motion Picture Sound Editors (Mpse) on Sunday. One of its Oscar rivals for Best Sound Editing, “1917,” picked up Dialogue & Adr.
“Parasite” continued its winning ways with the guild and claimed the Foreign language prize. “Rocketman” won the musical race, “Jojo Rabbit” nabbed the musical underscore award and “Toy Story” took animation.
Fans of the other three Oscar nominees for Best Sound Editing– “Joker,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” should not be too disheartened. This guild’s track record at predicting the eventual winner at the Academy Awards is spotty. Last year, all five of the Oscar nominees for Best Sound Editing numbered among the Mpse contenders. Eventual Oscar winner “Bohemian Rhapsody” did not contend in the category equivalent — Sound Effects and Foley.

“1917” and “Ford v Ferrari” split the top sound editing prizes Sunday night at the 67th annual Mpse Golden Reel Awards at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel. “1917” took Dialogue/Adr and “Ford v Ferrari” scored for Effects/Foley. The Elton John musical fantasy, “Rocketman,” earned Musical honors and “Jojo Rabbit” topped Music Underscore.
The other Feature awards went to “Parasite” (Foreign Language), “Toy Story 4” (Animation), and “Echo in the Canyon” (Documentary).
This sets up a competitive sound editing Oscar race between Sam Mendes’ innovative, continuous-shot World War I drama and James Mangold’s thrilling race car biopic. “The absence of visible edits meant it would have been easy to be overwhelmed with sound at times, never being able to cut to a different location to reset,” said Oliver Tarney, supervising sound editor of “1917.” “We worked hard at making sure there were always multiple layers of detail in the work we were doing.

All five of our predicted Oscar nominees for Best Sound Editing number among the contenders for the Golden Reel Awards bestowed by the Motion Picture Sound Editors (Mpse). Oscar frontrunner “1917” reaped two bids across the seven film categories as did two of its closest Oscar rivals — “Avengers: Endgame” and “Ford v Ferrari.” The other two expected Oscar nominees — “Ad Astra” and and “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” — are single nominees.
However, we might be underestimating “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “Joker,” which we have in eighth and nine place respectively at the Academy Awards; they earned a leading three nominations from these precursor prizes. Winners of the 67th annual Golden Reel Awards will be revealed on January 17, 2020
Last year, all five of the Oscar nominees for Best Sound Editing numbered among the Mpse contenders. Eventual Oscar winner “Bohemian Rhapsody” did not contend in the category equivalent — Sound Effects and Foley.

Two years ago, the Academy documentary branch had to grapple with a record 170 documentary feature submissions for the Best Documentary Feature Oscar. This year, it’s not so bad: only 159 were entered. The short list of 15 will be announced, along with eight others, on December 16.
All year, branch members have been getting lists of secure online screeners available to watch on the Academy website, increasing in volume, with more to come. Each voter is assigned a list of about 22-23 films to screen, so they all get covered. But it’s a burden to see them all, so the ones with the most attention move to the top of the much-watch list.
Give the advantage to box-office hits that were made available earlier in the year such as Neon’s “The Biggest Little Farm” and “Apollo 11,” as well as high-profile titles from HBO (“Diego Maradona” and “The Apollo”), Netflix,...

A total of 159 documentary features have qualified in the Oscars’ Best Documentary Feature category, the Academy announced on Tuesday.
Last year, 166 documentaries qualified. In 2017, a record 170 made the cut.
All of the films are now available to members of the Documentary Branch to stream on the Academy’s secure members website. The films have been placed there over the last six months, with 23 added to the site in June, 24 in July, 26 in August, 19 in September and 62 in October and only five in November.

Each member is randomly assigned 20% of the films as mandatory viewing but is free to see any additional films beyond those that are assigned. A preliminary round of voting will produce a 15-film shortlist, with a second-round narrowing those 15 to the five nominees.

Shia Labeouf flexed his star power at the weekend box office, as his personal drama “Honey Boy” launched bigger than expected in limited theaters. Streaming giant Amazon reported better results than the estimated numbers for Netflix’s well-reviewed festival hit “Marriage Story,” starring Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson. It’s tough to gauge what this means in the long haul.
But theaters will note the head-to-head triumph for Amazon, which is giving the film a conventional 90-day exclusive theatrical window, delaying home viewing, unlike Netflix. These grosses are strong enough for theaters to pursue the film for wider release, rewarding Amazon for that decision alone.
On the other hand, Netflix has opened its two top awards contenders in limited runs in indie theaters because the streamer couldn’t make a deal with the top theater chains. “The Irishman” expanded its initial runs, with limited shows and seats, to continued interest.

While the arthouse world is focused on Toronto and Venice this weekend, the indie box office did have some business thanks to Greenwich/1091’s “Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice,” which was released on seven screens this weekend.
The music documentary about the famed singer grossed $115,500 for a per screen average of $16,500. It’s another solid opening for Greenwich, which released “Echo in the Canyon” earlier this summer with $3.3 million from a maximum of 147 screens. Directed by Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman — makers of last year’s Oscar-nominated short doc “End Game” — “The Sound of My Voice” has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 88%.

In what is normally down time among specialized films, a few bright spots show that even off weeks can have their highlights. With three limited openings this week, the best came from the three-city debut of “Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice” (Greenwich), another documentary with a musician tie that tapped into the same audience that appreciated “Echo in the Canyon.” Meanwhile, “Ms. Purple” (Oscilloscope) had a strong single theater in Los Angeles to start. And a revival, the Alain Delon-starring 1970s “Mr. Klein” (Rialto) has one of the best classic reissue results of the year.
Meantime “The Peanut Butter Falcon” (Roadside Attractions) and “Brittany Runs a Marathon” (Amazon) both continue to find interest, rare this year among narrative features. With so many similar showing at festivals right now, this is a positive sign in a troubled market.
