Last night saw the broadcast of the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards. However, it would not be a usual broadcast with a live taping. Due to the current unrest of the Writer’s Guild strike, many attendees had chosen not to participate in solidarity with the ongoing protest. This prompted the once music-centric channel to air a pre-taped special.
Bruce Gillmer, the President of programming at Paramount Global and EP on the award show, stated, “As we carefully navigate how best to deliver the fan first awards’ show we envisioned that our team has worked so hard to create, we’re pivoting away from a live event that still enables us to produce a memorable night full of exclusive sneak peeks, irreverent categories our audience has come to expect, and countless moments that will both surprise and delight as we honor the best of film and TV over the past year.

While the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards weren't held live on May 7, some of Hollywood's biggest stars still got their moment during the prerecorded show. In the lead-up to Sunday, the ceremony planned for Barker Hangar in Los Angeles was scrapped amid the Writers Guild of America strike. Host Drew Barrymore stepped back from the gig in support of the striking writers, and the decision to do without a red carpet closely followed. Heading into the weekend, it was confirmed that the event would not be held in its original form.
Still, big names accepted their popcorn trophies through video clips, including Tom Cruise, who was piloting a plane while expressing his gratitude for his win for best performance in a movie for "Top Gun: Maverick."

Whiskey Myers seem made for the part of laser-wielding deputies in the riotous new video for “John Wayne.” The groove-driven country-rock tune appears on the Texas band’s new album Tornillo, which is out today.
With its message of resilience and southern-fried disco boogie rhythm, “John Wayne” is a nice accompaniment for a battle between the forces of good and evil. The clip, which opens with a cheeky, Star Wars-type crawl, portrays the sextet as tough lawmen in some future-past Wild West, charged with taking on a dastardly villain...

The hunt for an elusive South American flower is at the heart of the latest addition to the Peacock streaming service, but the creators of the new show aren’t from the typical Hollywood studio.
“Unlocked,” a short film that debuts Friday on the NBCUniversal broadband outlet, is the creation of tech giant Hewlett-Packard and the agency Giant Spoon. The mini-movie tells the story of data scientists hoping to track down a rare plant that might just offer a cure to a mysterious neurological disease that ails the world, but it might solve some other problems as well, like how to get ad messages in front of consumers who are increasingly accustomed to avoid such things when they hunker down for a new bingeworthy session.
The mission in the film is critical, but so too is the one mentioned above. “Streaming continues to grow in terms of audience,” says Laura Correnti,...

The Universal Monsters have been rebooted, reinvented and remade countless times over the last 90 years since Bela Lugosi first showed up as Dracula back in 1931, but no matter how hard they try, the studio have never been able to recapture the magic of those glory days. The likes of Dracula, Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, The Wolf Man and the various sequels and spinoffs were massively popular throughout the 1930s and 40s, so much so that they still arguably remain the definitive interpretations of the characters to this day.
Of course, with such marketable commodities at their disposal, Universal are constantly trying to relaunch the brand for modern audiences. But up until Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man scored widespread critical acclaim and bumper box office last year, the monsters had become increasingly irrelevant after the decades of disappointment that followed in the wake of Stephen Sommers’ 1999 camp cult classic The Mummy.

A quarter of this year’s Cartoon Forum pitches are derived from existing IP and “The Upside Down River” – a high concept mini-series – is a fine example.
Based on the book “La rivière à l’envers” by award-winning French children’s author Jean-Claude Mourlevat, the 10-part fantasy adventure comes from the 10-year-old Paris-based producer-distributor Dandelooo, whose animation credits include the International Emmy-winning “The Treehouse Stories” and France 3 special “Houdini”.
Comprising 26-minute episodes and aimed at an audience of eight-to-12 year olds, “The Upside Down River” follows the adventures of Hannah, a spoiled girl mourning the death of her father who needs a drop of water from a fabled river to give her beloved pet bird eternal life.
She’s joined in her quest by a shy boy called Tomek, in an epic fantasy adventure that Dandelooo’s joint founders, Jean-Baptiste Wéry and Emmanuèle Petry describe as having “life and death...

With the help of real-life attorney and author, Marcia Clark, The Fix Season 1 Episode 1 takes on the case of the century and adds just enough fictional twists to keep us guessing.
For those of us who lived through the Oj Simpson case, the similarities are strikingly obvious. Instead of a famed football player, we have a movie star and swap out the dead wife and boyfriend for a dead wife and girlfriend.
We keep the by the book female Ada and charismatic defense attorney but there's no mention of a low-speed chase on the 405...yet.
All jokes and comparisons aside, The Fix is a compelling murder mystery and legal show with a stellar cast.
Robin Tunney (The Mentalist) plays Maya Travis, the Ada who is swamped by guilt after movie star and possible double murderer, Sevvy Johnson walks free.
