Exclusive: Anonymous Content is developing Ryan La Sala’s bestselling social horror novel The Honeys for film.
The Honeys follows a queer teen, Mars, who is investigating the connection between his twin sister Caroline’s violent death and the Honeys, a group of beautiful, otherworldly girls who she boarded with at her exclusive summer camp. As Mars probes into who — or what — the Honeys really are, he’s surprised to find them inviting him into their world. He discovers they’re guarding a dark and sickeningly sweet secret in the meadows behind their cabin that could cost him everything.
David Levine and Garrett Kemble will oversee the project for Anonymous Content’s AC Studios. La Sala will serve as EP.
La Sala’s bestselling and award-winning novels center around surreal things happening to queer people, including Reverie and Be Dazzled, both published by Sourcebooks, and The Honeys (Scholastic). His next...

Banijay Rights, the distribution arm of French production company Banijay Group, has acquired Funwood Media, the producer of Spanish crime thriller La Sala (The Room).
Banijay has taken a majority stake in the Spain and Italy-based company for an undisclosed fee, marking another acquisition after it agreed to buy Endemol Shine Group for $2.2Bn in October.
As well as producing shows like The Room — which is being adapted by BBC Studios-backed producer Firebird Pictures — and Disney Channel Italia’s Monica Chef, Funwood Media also works as a distributor and agent.
Banijay Rights chief Tim Mutimer will work closely with Funwood Media’s founder Aldo Spagnoli to integrate the company and exploit its expertise across Europe.
Mutimer said: “Aldo is incredibly well-established across Spain and Italy, and with a growing presence in France, he is perfectly positioned to add value to our activities.”...

Until recently, when a Spanish TV operator put up 100% finance, it retained nearly 100% of rights. Now, no one size fits all. Variety analyzes two projects that break the mold in Spain.
“La Sala”
Police TV thriller “La Sala” (The Room) shows three production companies greenlighting a TV project without TV network support — unthinkable until recently. Madrid-based Isla Audiovisual, creator of the CW’s “Star Crossed,” and Canary Islands’ CanCan and Funwood Media teamed to develop the series with their own creative and executive resources.
Producers pitched the script to TF1’s Newen, who put up financing against the series’ future international distribution. They pre-sold Spanish Svod to HBO España, and free-to-air TV rights to the regional pubcasters association Forta.
Directed by César Arriero and Manuel Sanabria, “La Sala” shot entirely in Gran Canaria, tapping into Canary Islands’ 45% tax credits for private investment in Spanish productions.
That helped cut the episodes...
