20th Century Studios’ much-anticipated Escape from New York reboot has encountered a significant setback. The directing duo, Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, known as Radio Silence, have confirmed they are no longer involved in the project. Speaking with ComicBook.com, Radio Silence discussed their recent project, Abigail, along with the status of the Escape from New York reboot. Gillett noted, We are not, unfortunately. I think titles like that bounce around for a while and I think they’ve tried to get that out of the blocks a few times. I think it’s just ultimately a tricky rights issue thing. There’s a

It was announced two years ago that filmmaking team Radio Silence were working on bringing Snake Plissken back to the screen for a brand new movie based on John Carpenter’s Escape from New York for 20th Century Studios, with John Carpenter himself on board as an executive producer of the upcoming movie.
The project had originally been described as a “reboot,” but filmmakers Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett had described it as more of a “requel.” Unfortunately, the pair revealed to Comicbook.com that they’re no longer developing the requel and have parted ways with the project.
Gillett told the outlet, “We are not, unfortunately. I think titles like that bounce around for a while and I think they’ve tried to get that out of the blocks a few times. I think it’s just ultimately a tricky rights issue thing. There’s a clock on it and...

Less than one month after releasing in theaters, Universal has announced that their vampire ballerina horror movie Abigail will be headed home to “Premium VOD” this week.
We’ve learned this morning that you’ll be able to buy ($24.99) or rent ($19.99) Abigail at home beginning tomorrow, May 7, 2024, from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.
Abigail is the third vampire movie from the Universal Monsters brand in the past year, the film scaring up $34.7 million at the worldwide box office these past few weeks. That gives it a higher worldwide gross than both The Last Voyage of the Demeter ($21.7 million) and Renfield ($26.4 million), and it’s also the most critically successful of the three vampire movies.

While the big-screen adaptation of The Fall Guy was never expected to open to mega-blockbuster numbers, no one thought the well-reviewed Ryan Gosling movie would stumble out of the gate to this extent. Indeed, Hollywood insiders assumed this had a shot at a $40 million plus opening (we expected about $35 million). Now it looks like David Leitch’s film will only make $28.5 million over what’s widely considered the first weekend of the summer movie season. Last year, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 made $110 million in the same frame.
The Fall Guy was never expected to open anywhere near that number. Indeed, it was originally planned as a March release, only to be moved thanks to how empty the release calendar is due to the SAG/WGA strikes from last year. Still, given how well it was reviewed (we loved it) and the fact that stars Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt...

In 2022, Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media revived the Scream franchise with a new entry (the fifth) that was a box office hit, earning almost $139 million at the global box office. Fourteen months later, Scream VI came along – and became an even bigger hit, pulling in almost $169 million at the global box office, a number that was up there with the series’ heyday, when the first Scream and Scream 2 made just over $170 million. (Scream 3 also made over $160 million – only Scream 4 failed to crack $100 million.) So, of course, the companies are moving full steam ahead with Scream 7. While the movie seemed, initially, to be on the fast-track to success, the track it’s on has turned out to be a shockingly bumpy ride.

A fiercely capable woman with ice water in her veins finds herself in a creepy-looking mansion, where she has to survive a supernatural threat over the course of one endless night and eventually ends up covered in gore and viscera? If I had a nickel for every time a horror movie directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (aka Radio Silence) came out in the last five years with that exact same premise, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but you know how the rest of the meme goes. If this past weekend's "Abigail" triggered a nagging feeling of déjà vu, well, that's probably because the vampire movie packing a nasty bite (you can read /Film's review by Bj Colangelo here) shares quite a bit of DNA with the directing duo's previous movie, 2019's "Ready or Not."
Apparently, the creative team decided to lean into those similarities even more.

Things had been going so well at the box office over the past few weeks, so it was disappointing that none of the week’s three new wide releases made much of an impact. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Although Universal’s vampire thriller “Abigail,” directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (aka “Radio Silence”), had the best hopes of breaking out due to its cool horror premise and ensemble cast, Alex Garland‘s future shock thriller “Civil War,” starring Kirsten Dunst and Wagner Moura, was able to hold onto first place with $11.1 million, a drop of 57% from its record-setting opening for A24. The movie has grossed $44.9 million domestically so far, which already puts it in the top 10 all-time grossers for the studio after just 10 days.

And staying true to what horror fans have come to expect from their previous efforts, Abigail is a high-octane, high-energy horror film that pulls no punches or fangs, making for another scary good time at the cinema.

Radio Silence Talk ‘Abigail,’ Their ‘Scream’ Exit and Trying to Make ‘The Shining’ Elevators Jealous
Abigail has been a long time coming for Radio Silence, the filmmaking collective consisting of co-directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin/Tyler Gillett and producer Chad Villella.
Coming off of their successful relaunch of the Scream franchise in 2022, the team strived to make another film before they returned to Ghostface. One idea was a feature now known as Abigail, but they ultimately ended up shooting Scream VI instead, as Scream rights holder Spyglass Media was eager to keep the momentum going. And together, they did just that, as Scream VI went on to set domestic box office records for the franchise.
Still, Abigail never left Radio Silence’s minds. As they were making Scream VI, the team was also preparing to do the ballerina vampire pic immediately after they finished promoting Scream VI’s March 2023 release. After all, they’d just put out two Scream movies within a 14-month period, so it’s...

In the wake of Leigh Whannell’s Invisible Man back in 2020, Universal has been struggling to achieve further box office success with their Universal Monsters brand. It's a juggling act to get an entertaining horror film - one that's fun, funny, yet still scary, with a good share of violence and gore, a decent story with snappy dialogue, and a monster that an audience can root for, maybe more than the heros. Radio Silence - directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, and producer Chad Villella - have been (mostly) pulling this off, with a particular formula that has worked with slasher and pseudo-slasher films such as Ready or Not and Scream (2022). If it isn't broken, don't fix it, and hence we have Abigail. A solid piece of horror action comedy, a story that moves from crime caper to pseudo-slasher with an engaging monster, it's not without its flaws, but it's...

Two highly anticipated films are released this weekend: Radio Silence’s Abigail and Guy Ritchie’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. However, the release pattern for the latter is highly unusual, with Ritchie’s big-budget war epic only getting a theatrical release in the United States, skipping theaters in Canada and the UK in favor of an exclusive run on Prime Video later. As such, it’s not expected to make much of a dent at the weekend box office, with it looking like Abigail will pull off an easy win.
Currently, we’re predicting Abigail will make about $20 million. That’s much less than what Radio Silence pulled off with the Scream films. Remember, though, that this is an original horror title with a twist on classic vampire folklore. So far, the reviews have been mixed, with our man, Mike Conway, loving it, while others have accused it of being a tad goofy.

Radio Silence follow up Ready Or Not and two Scream films with the bloody and very 18-rated Abigail. Here’s our review.
It was only after walking out of a screening of Abigail that I appreciated just how much of it had been let out of the bag via its promotion. Not the ending or anything, but more the way the film turns from being the kidnap heist thriller it starts off as into, well, something else. I mention this not by way of criticism, but more to explain why this review isn’t going anywhere near stuff even shown in the trailer. I saw this cold and had an absolute blast. I can’t give you an honest reading as to how I’d feel had I known what was around the corner.
Still. I’m hardly playing surprises to suggest that there’s a horror tinge to this,...

Talk about nepotism. “Abigail,” a blood-sucking thriller about the daughter of Dracula, arguably the most famous vampire in history, is poised to lead at the domestic box office.
The R-rated movie, from Universal Pictures, is aiming for $12 million to $15 million from 3,300 North American theaters in its first weekend of release. But “Abigail” first has to fend off last weekend’s champion, A24’s “Civil War,” before taking the box office crown. The provocative thriller debuted last weekend with $25.8 million and looks to bring in $10 million to $12 million in its sophomore outing.
Based on projections, “Abigail” will, however, dance circles around two fellow newcomers, director Guy Ritchie’s “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare” and Crunchyroll’s anime adventure “Spy x Family Code: White.” Those films are targeting $5 million to $6 million, though rivals have pegged ticket sales ever-so-slightly higher at $8 million.

Filmmaking collective Radio Silence says a script for Ready Or Not 2 has been written, and that it’s “an absolute f—ing banger.”

Out this week in theaters is Radio Silence’s Abigail, a heist-turned-bloodbath when kidnappers realize the child ballerina they’ve snatched isn’t quite human. That the petite vampire is a ballerina feels apt. After all, the deceptive art form has a reputation for dainty elegance that belies the sheer grueling dedication of its performers, both physically and mentally.
Ballet requires a high level of dedication to practice and performance and frequently spills over into body horror through broken toenails, stress fractures, and overuse injuries. In other words, ballet is often a mix of pain and beauty, which means it pairs well with horror.

The combo of director duo Radio Silence and star Andy Samberg is said to have piqued the interest of studios, with the battle commencing to sign up their untitled robot comedy project.
Here’s a story that caught our eye this morning, not least because it looks like it could have potential to offer a really fun time. Andy Samberg, the comedian and actor, is said to have teamed up with Radio Silence, the directorial duo of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, for an unnamed project that is being pitched to a number of studios as a ‘robot comedy’.
As well as featuring regularly on popular TV shows such as Saturday Night Live and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Samberg has added his comedic talents to plenty of films, not to mention doing lots of voice work too. As a leading man, he’s starred in some excellent comedies over the years, with...

Under $5 million; no first time directors (unless there’s a named producer); actually good. These used to be the tenets by which Blumhouse built its name. But oh how things have changed. It’s looking increasingly like the little studio that could is making a land grab for virtually every property in horror-dom.
The latest trailer to drop from Blumhouse is for Speak No Evil, a remake of the 2022 Danish film of the same name which caused a big buzz when it hit Shudder for being so utterly and depressingly grim. Blumhouse snapped it up and cast James McAvoy, star of Blumhouse movies Split and Glass, as the central psycho. James Waktins who made similarly nasty and misanthropic horror Eden Lake has directed and the film is set to release in September. That is a pretty speedy turnaround as these things go, but Blumhouse always was agile. McAvoy is good...

Elevated horror can be wonderful. Packed with subtext, visually stunning, often emotionally devastating with standout performances across the board, the subgenre is full of greats. But sometimes you just want exploding bodies.
If this is you, with Abigail you have come to the right place. From directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett who are part of the collective called Radio Silence, this is a genre mashup which begins with an Oceans 11-style set up where the loot is a little girl our gang of professional criminals will be holding for ransom. But when they get to the vast mansion where she is to spend the night, something is very off, and things head into Dusk Til Dawn territory. This lot have very definitely come to the wrong place.
Radio Silence have been occupied with the last two Scream movies of late, but Abigail is much closer in tone to 2019s Ready or Not.

Universal has a long history with vampire films, going back to the 1930s. Their latest, Abigail, offers a reboot of 1936’s Dracula’s Daughter, a hypnotizing work that still stands as one of the best follow-ups to 1931’s Dracula. Now, fresh from its premiere at the Overlook Film Festival, it looks like Universal has marked a successful return to their vampire lineup.
Many reactions from Abigail’s premiere praise the movie for being nearly endlessly entertaining, bringing something fresh to the genre while also giving off the vibe of some of our favorite vampire flicks from decades past:
Abigail is expertly choreographed insanity from Radio Silence that injects new blood into the vampire horror game. You'll be yelling until the very last plié.

A cute little girl in a tutu turns out to be a bloodsucking monster. Here’s the new Abigail trailer.
In Abigail, the new horror film from directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (aka Radio Silence), the kid’s not alright.
The duo behind the two latest Scream films are reuniting with Melissa Barrera for a vampire film with a delicious twist.
Take a look at the brand new Abigail trailer below, and the first trailer from back at the start of the year just below that…
Dan Stevens, Kathryn Newton, Angus Cloud and Kevin Durand also star in the film alongside Barrera. Matilda and Night Swim star Alisha Weir plays the titular Abigail.
This will be one of two projects released in 2024 involving Cloud, who died tragically in 2023. Abigail is heading to cinemas in April, but Cloud also stars in Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s next film, Freaky Tales with Pedro Pascal,...

Were you worried that the one-two-three punch of "Morbius," "Renfield," and "The Last Voyage of the Demeter" misfiring at the box office would spell the death of vampire horror for the foreseeable future? If so, rest assured, it takes more than a few random stabs to slay this blood-thirsty genre. 2024 will see the Og cinematic creature of the night, Count Orlok, return to show everyone how it's done when Robert Eggers' "Nosferatu" remake attacks theaters next winter. Luckily, in the meantime, horror aficionados can satiate their bloodlust by checking out "Abigail," the latest from directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett and producer Chad Villella (the trio also known as Radio Silence).

In a brand new behind-the-scenes featurette, actor Kathryn Newton gives a brief tour of the set for the Radio Silence-directed Abigail. That includes a swimming pool filled not with water, but decomposing corpses.
Releasing April 19, Abigail has been rated “R” for “Strong bloody violence and gore throughout, pervasive language and brief drug use.” And it’s not hard to see why, either.
Watch the featurette below to get a peek at some of the gore, courtesy of a deep indoor swimming pool.
In the film, “After a group of would-be criminals kidnap the 12-year-old ballerina daughter of a powerful underworld figure, all they have to do to collect a $50 million ransom is watch the girl overnight. In an isolated mansion, the captors start to dwindle, one by one, and they discover, to their mounting horror, that they’re locked inside with no normal little girl.”

After teaming on forthcoming Uni monster thriller Abigail, both of the newest films in the Scream franchise, and Searchlight horror comedy Ready or Not, Project X and Radio Silence have entered into a new joint venture with MRC for the production and financing of modestly budgeted genre features.
Under the pact, the companies will pool their resources, expertise, and creativity, with an eye toward producing 2-3 new films per year. Levering both original scripts and untapped IP, the collaboration will allow the companies to move toward generating inventive and engaging horror and thriller projects, from both up-and-coming and established writers and directors. They’re currently sourcing and developing projects to kickstart the initiative and will be announcing their initial slate soon.

Jenna Ortega’s commitments to the TV show Wednesday mean she’s the second person this week to depart the Scream franchise.
Commercially at least, 2023 has been a banner year for the Scream franchise. No matter what you thought of Scream VI, that landed at the start of the year, it certainly brought in the cash. A $44m opening weekend marked a highpoint for the series, and it didn’t take long for Spyglass Media and Paramount Pictures to crack on with the idea of Scream 7.
A slight change of personnel was originally announced, with the directorial debut Radio Silence – who helmed the last two films – moving on to other projects. In their place came Christopher Landon, he of Happy Death Day and Freaky fame. A fine replacement.
But if all was going swimmingly where Scream 7 was concerned, it’s all been a bit upended this year.

‘Heartstopper‘ is a British coming of age rom-com-drama series streaming on Netflix. It is written and created by Alice Oseman, and is based on her webcomic and graphic novel of the same name. Season 1 was released on Netflix April 2022, and fans will be happy to know that season 2 is now available too.
‘Heartstopper’ Season 2 brings us another 8 episodes following the good “old” characters: Charlie, Nick, Elle and Tao. Together, or apart (no spoilers here), they are still confronting the challenges ahead of them as they are growing up.
Season 1 was received with critical acclaim, particularly for its tone and pacing, as well as its portrayal of LGBT people. It was nominated nine times and won innumerable awards, among them 3 Children’s and Family Emmy Awards; 1 for Best Musical Moment at the 2022 MTV Movie & TV Awards. The soundtrack deserves a mention, as it became rather popular.

The filmmaking team known as Radio Silence brought Ghostface back to life with hit sequel Scream back in 2022, and this year they returned to the director’s chairs to continue the saga with Scream VI. The franchise’s sixth installment was another hit at the box office, ensuring that a seventh movie won’t be far behind.
While Scream VII hasn’t yet been officially announced by Paramount and Spyglass, we can confirm that it’s definitely in the works. We’ve also been paying close attention to the recent rumors that Radio Silence’s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett won’t be back to direct Scream VII, and that Christopher Landon may take over.
How true are those rumors? We’re told Radio Silence was very interested in directing Scream VII but unfortunately they’ve been busy with their upcoming Universal Studios monster movie, which was recently filming under a shroud of secrecy.

The cast for Radio Silence‘s (V/H/S, Southbound, Scream, Scream VI) mysterious “Untitled Monster Thriller” for Universal is shaping up to be monstrous in size and talent. Hot on the heels of announcing Dan Stevens among the lineup, Deadline reports that Kevin Durand has joined the cast as well.
While details of course remain under lock and key for this project, Durand is no stranger to the realm of horror, especially when it comes to playing villains or morally dubious characters. The actor was more recently seen in Netflix’s “Locke & Key” and the James Wan-produced “Swamp Thing” series. Durand will next appear in Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.
Update: Kathryn Newton, Angus Cloud, and Will Catlett will also star.

Melissa Barrera, who of course plays a pivotal role in Radio Silence’s two Scream movies, recently signed on to lead the cast of the mysterious untitled horror movie.

Melissa Barrera is stepping back into the world of Radio Silence, the filmmakers who directed her in Scream (2022) and Scream VI. The actor will star in Radio Silence’s upcoming monster thriller for Universal, which was just announced earlier this week.
Details are wrapped up as tight as a mummy, but it is described as being akin to The Invisible Man and this week’s Renfield in that it will re-imagine one of Universal’s classic monsters. The title for the new project was at one point Dracula’s Daughter, which centered on a group of kidnappers who abduct a group of young people, among them, Dracula’s daughter.
Radio Silence’s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett will direct, with the filmmaking collective’s Chad Villella producing with William Sherak, Paul Neinstein and James Vanderbilt at Project X Entertainment. Stephen Sheilds penned the script with Guy Busick revising a draft.

[This story contains spoilers for Scream VI.]
Scream VI filmmakers Radio Silence, the collective that consists of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett and Chad Villella, have set a new franchise record with a $44.5 million opening weekend.
Just 14 months after their legacy sequel Scream (2022) reinvigorated Kevin Williamson and Wes Craven’s slasher franchise by introducing it to a whole new generation of horror fans, co-directors Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett, alongside producer Villella, are now opening up about the choices they did and didn’t make. For starters, the persistent rumor that Stu Macher (Mathew Lillard) would reprise his co-Ghostface role from the original 1996 film and serve as Scream VI’s Ghostface mastermind may or may not have been started by their co-screenwriter Guy Busick.
“We love that … It’s cool to be a part of a franchise where who lives and who dies is so meaningful to people. And who knows, with Guy at the keyboard, anything is possible with Stu Macher,...
