In addition to Bambi: The Reckoning, which is part of the Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey universe, another upcoming Bambi horror movie has been announced this week.
A gory horror-comedy that pays tribute to the slasher movies of the ’80s and ’90s, Bambi horror movie Bampire was just launched on Indiegogo, and we’ve got your first look.
Directed by Taylor Morden (The Last Blockbuster) and written by Zoë Wassman, the indie film is said to feature “heart-wrenching live action performances, hand-drawn animation by Josh Stifter (A24 and Kevin Smith’s Tusk), practical gore by award-winning fx artist Trysta Kelley, a claymation sequence from effects supervisor Webster Colcord, and even diegetic VHS footage from an in-world camera.”
Writer Zoë Wassman teases, “Picture Evil Dead 2 meets Who Framed Roger Rabbit.”

One of TV’s most prolific network hits is ringing in a major milestone in 2024 as Lost marks its 20th anniversary. In celebration of the show’s legacy, filmmaker Taylor Morden, who helmed The Last Blockbuster, the documentary about the last Blockbuster rental store has been putting together a new documentary, Getting Lost. The independent feature-length documentary has been a crowd-funded fan endeavor via Indiegogo, where Morden and team have been sharing updates about the film, which is set to premiere later this year, timed to the exact 20th anniversary of Lost’s pilot, which aired September 22, 2004. No network or streamer is currently attached to run the title as of now. https://t.co/cs58vNgYs7 pic.twitter.com/5ch0YQmjQc — Getting Lost (@gettinglostdoc) February 5, 2024 The project aims to make it the definitive story of Lost and its dedicated fandom. Is Blockbuster Video about to come back from the dead? While it's unclear precisely what is going on, something is happening with the once mighty video chain that has been more or less deceased for the better part of a decade. Blockbuster.com is now live once more and when you visit the website a message reads, "We are working on rewinding your movie." That is certainly ominous but it does suggest that something is going to happen -- and likely soon.
Unfortunately, for the time being, there is very little information to go on. Dish still owns Blockbuster, having purchased the company out of bankruptcy back in 2011. They have done some stuff with the license, including board games and merchandise, but there has been no indication of attempting to revive the actual chain of retail stores. As it stands, there is one lone Blockbuster store located in Bend, Oregon,...

Blockbuster Video has sprung back to life online with a sole page featuring the brand’s iconic logo and the text, “We are working on rewinding your movie,” giving hope to many fans.
It’s been 19 years since the chain of video stores hit its peak with 9,000 locations worldwide — and subsequently came crashing down. But Blockbuster has seen a resurgence in pop culture relevance in recent years after Netflix produced and released one season of a Randall Park-starring sitcom based on its last location a year after a popular documentary, “The Last Blockbuster,” played on the streamer. The last store also released a Super Bowl commercial last month.
Blockbuster’s owner, Dish Network, has not commented on the sudden revival of Blockbuster.com. It has previously said it was not franchising new locations of the former video-store chain, with the one outlet famously remaining in Bend, Oregon. Dish said it...

What year is it?! Blockbuster may soon have plans to urge its followers to be kind and rewind, as their official website has gone live yet again and their Twitter account has awoken from its slumber.
The official Blockbuster site now has a homepage featuring an image of their iconic logo, along with the text “We Are Working On Rewinding Your Movie.” As per the Wayback Machine, the website has had this look a number of times in the past. However, since Blockbuster also posted on Twitter just this week, one might wonder if the company (whose parent company is now Dish Network) is looking to take another go at the market…or partake in another venture altogether.
New business idea: We're going to come back as a bank and use VHS and DVDs as currency. Time to go visit your mom.

Lost fans are preparing to go back.
It has been announced that, 20 years after the show premiered, a new documentary detailing the show’s groundbreaking success will be released.
The film, titled Getting Lost, will tell the entire story of how Lost became the biggest cult show on the planet, generating intense fan discussion and theories on the internet throughout its six seasons on air.
Getting Lost is also set to address – and hopefully put to bed – the furore surrounding the show’s finale, which has gone down in history as one of the most misunderstood endings of all time.
Find The Independent’s deep dive on the finale, featuring words from co-showrunner Damon Lindelof, Henry Ian Cusick (Desmond) and L Scott Caldwell (Rose), here.
The film will be overseen by filmmaker Taylor Morden, who directed The Last Blockbuster.

Nostalgia is a funny thing. It's powerful, this feeling that reminds us of things we loved from an earlier time in our lives. Many cinephiles have bitter feelings towards Blockbuster, the movie and video game rental chain that pushed many mom and pop stores out of business, but others (myself included) have fond memories of the blue-and-yellow stores. In the semi-rural area where I spent my adolescence, Blockbuster Video was the only rental game in town, and it was my oasis from the drudgery of being a creative movie nerd in the middle of football and cornhole country. These days, Blockbuster is almost entirely a thing of nostalgia, but The Last Blockbuster in Bend, Oregon, is still managing to hang on through some creative marketing and tourism.

Netflix is bringing Blockbuster back, and everyone involved is aware of how that sounds.
The streaming giant on Thursday launched its new comedy series Blockbuster, starring Randall Park, Melissa Fumero and J.B. Smoove. The show centers on Timmy (Park), the manager of the once-prominent video-rental chain’s last remaining store, as he tries to keep the brand alive while competing with streaming culture. Blockbuster, set in Michigan, is a fictionalized look at the company’s final still-existing franchised location in Bend, Oregon, that was the focus of the 2020 documentary The Last Blockbuster.
Series creator Vanessa Ramos tells The Hollywood Reporter that Dish Network, which currently owns the Blockbuster rights, toured the show’s set to verify its authenticity, including making sure that the re-created store used the exact hues of blue and yellow. Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment, owner of the ad-supported on-demand streamer Crackle, on Wednesday announced plans to acquire the struggling DVD-rental company Redbox in a 375 million deal that includes roughly 50 million in stock and the assumption of roughly 321 million in debt.
The all-stock transaction leaves Chicken Soup stockholders with about 76.5 of the combined company, while Redbox stockholders will own about 23.5. Redbox’s majority owner, Apollo Group Management, will own roughly 15 of Chicken Soup. The deal is expected to close in the second half of 2022, pending regulatory approval.
Redbox has struggled with the decline of the DVD and video game rental market as the company derived nearly 90 of its income from its 38,000 kiosks in groceries and drugstores nationwide. That decline was made worse during the pandemic, as revenues fell from 858 million in 2019 to just 289 million last year.

Having chronicled the decline of one influential business with “The Last Blockbuster,” Taylor Morden will instead tell the story of the incredible rise of another in his next feature length documentary.
Morden’s new film will examine Build-a-Bear Workshop, charting its growth from startup fad to decades-old experiential retailer. The film is being made with the company’s cooperation and will coincide with Build-a-Bear’s 25th anniversary. It recently started production at the company’s headquarters in St. Louis.

The purchase price of $15.55 million consists of $8 million in cash, $2 million in newly issued shares of Series A perpetual preferred stock and 375,000 shares of Class A common stock. The preferred shares were valued at $25 in the deal, and the common stock at $14.80.
In addition to creating a bulked-up specialty film distributor, the deal will provide a significant boost for Chicken Soup’s streaming operation. The company is among the leaders in ad-supported streaming, operating Crackle, Popcornflix and other services. It bought Screen Media in 2017 and plans to combine 1091 with that existing business unit.
Sony launched 1091 as a film and TV subsidiary of The Orchard in 2015. It rebranded as 1091 in 2019.

The era of nostalgia bait has reached its inevitable height: here comes a workplace sitcom dedicated to Blockbuster Video Store. The kicker? The series comes from none other than Netflix. Perhaps you've heard of this tiny DVD mail company turned streaming giant — it's the one that Blockbuster once had the chance to purchase before the company blossomed and eventually buried them. Now only one Blockbuster remains standing, a tourist attraction and singular reminder of the place where so many movie lovers found their sole outlet for exploration. Ironically, said business also happens to be the subject of Taylor Morden's documentary "The Last Blockbuster,"...

Randall Park is set to star in a comedy series at Netflix that is set at the last Blockbuster Video, Variety has learned.
The streamer has ordered 10 episodes of “Blockbuster,” which was created by writer and executive producer Vanessa Ramos. David Caspe and Jackie Clarke also serve as writers and executive producers. John Davis and John Fox also executive produce via Davis Entertainment. Universal Television is the studio.
The single-cam series is described as an ensemble comedy that takes place in the last Blockbuster Video in America. It explores what it takes – and more specifically who it takes – for a small business to succeed against all odds.
“To say getting to make a show about a place I love, with my friends Jackie and David, and Randall Park as our star is a dream come true, somehow feels like an understatement,” Ramos said. “I could not be more grateful to...

Exclusive: 1091 Pictures has acquired rights to Clerk, the Malcolm Ingram-directed feature documentary about the life and career of filmmaker (and many other things) Kevin Smith. The pic, which had its premiere in March at SXSW, will now get a digital release November 23.
The news comes as Smith celebrates his 51st birthday Monday, which happens to be the same day he begins production on Clerks III, the long-in-the-works sequel to his self-funded 1994 indie smash that launched his career as a writer-director, actor, comic book guru, podcaster, producer and TV host. As Deadline broke last month, Lionsgate has worldwide rights to Clerks III, which includes all of the major cast member from the original including Jeff Anderson, Brian O’Halloran, Jay Mewes and Smith as Silent Bob, along with Rosario Dawson.
As for Clerk, Mewes is among those interviewed to weigh in on the peaks and pitfalls of Smith’s career,...

This story was originally published on Nov. 2, 2020. Netflix released “The Last Blockbuster” documentary in March. Watch the trailer here.
The last Blockbuster in the world, located in Bend, Oregon, is weathering the pandemic by tapping into the nostalgia of the iconic video store chain, while also offering sleepovers through Airbnb and selling merchandise sourced through local vendors.
Plus, at a time when consumers are done scrolling through Netflix and Hulu and have watched everything there is on Amazon Prime due to the continuing theater closures and production stoppages because of the pandemic, Blockbuster offers tangible content for which people actually have to leave their homes.
“When this whole thing started, streaming platforms were the new toy — you can go online, and scroll in your jammies,” Sandi Harding, the store manager of Blockbuster, told TheWrap. “But now, people miss getting out, and being able to walk around and getting an idea...

To judge by this weekend’s box office, Oscars mean little to the movie-loving public. The five available Best Picture contenders — “The Father,” “Minari,” “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Nomadland,” and “Promising Young Woman” — grossed in the range of $200,000-$300,000.
However, “Promising” also dropped from $19.99 to $5.99 on VOD one day after Academy announced its five nominations. It now ranks on every chart we list, including #1 on Apple TV. “Minari” also received increased attention, even at $19.99. Of note is its #5 placement at Spectrum Cable; not only do its customers tend to reflect mass-audience tastes, but the chart ranks by rentals, not price. That shows significant crossover interest.
“Nomadland” is available on Hulu and “Judas” is available at HBO Max (through March 28), so any Oscar impacts at home are unknown. “The Father” will be available on PVOD March 26.

Like many funerals, “The Last Blockbuster” is both a celebration of life and a time to mourn a lost loved one.
The Netflix-streaming documentary delves into the macroeconomic forces that spelled doom for Blockbuster Video and why the rise of Netflix wasn’t the nail in the coffin so many assume it was.
It also illustrates the formula store manager Sandi Harding uses daily in Bend, Oregon, to keep the gears turning in the last Blockbuster on earth, serving as a model for how a like-minded entrepreneurial spirit could similarly cash in. It even ponders the intimate experience of snapping a Blockbuster VHS case shut — there’s nothing like it.
“There’s this peace when you walk in,” voice actor James Arnold Taylor says in the documentary about experiencing a Blockbuster store, “and you go, ‘The world is mine. I can accomplish anything right now. Everything is at my fingertips.

At its peak in 2004, Blockbuster licensed its name to nearly 9,000 video rental stores around the world. According to my calculations, that means the chain, which specialized in stocking up on new releases (and strangling competitors out of business), must have had at least 90,000 copies of “Gigli” in circulation.
Today, you can’t find even a single “Gigli” DVD at the one remaining Blockbuster store on Earth — a family-owned, community-supported franchise holdout in Bend, Ore. I know because I just got off the phone with them. “Can you spell it?” asked the clerk, unfamiliar with the 2004 Ben Affleck-Jennifer Lopez flop. That said, you can still find thousands of other movies for rent, the increasing rarity of which is apparently enough to inspire pilgrimages to this Tuvalu-like outpost for many who associate Blockbuster with early jobs and/or formative movie-watching experiences — even though there are probably local stores that could...

The streaming wars are just as fiery and competitive as ever. Disney+ now has one Marvel TV show under its belt (WandaVision), with another one to come in March (The Falcon and The Winter Soldier). In response, Netflix is broadening its reach with its list of new releases for March 2021.
Netflix always features plenty of international options for viewers across the globe, but March is the first month where it seems as though international releases make up roughly half of Netflix’s originals. And that’s great! China’s The Yin Yang Master and Spain’s Coven of Sisters both look to be intriguing films this month.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Thursday revealed the 366 feature films that are eligible for consideration at the 93rd Oscars, which are set to air April 25 live on ABC.
The total number of films is up from last year’s 344 films in contention.
This year’s list was compiled based on tweaked eligibility rules implemented because of the coronavirus pandemic, which has pushed the ceremony to its latest date ever. For this year, feature films had to open by February 28 in a commercial motion picture theater for a seven-day qualifying run in at least one of six metro areas: Los Angeles County, New York City, the Bay Area, Chicago, Miami and Atlanta. Drive-in theaters open nightly were included as qualifying venues, as were films intended for theatrical release but because of the lockdown made available first via streaming, VOD service or other broadcast.

Friday is here, and that can only mean one thing. The weekly barrage of new releases on VOD have arrived to tempt viewers to part with their hard-earned cash, and there are some real big hitters on offer. To sum up how badly the ongoing effects of the Coronavirus pandemic have affected the theatrical industry, The Croods: A New Age is now available to rent or buy, despite the animated sequel having topped the domestic box office for the last three weekends, and it’s still the number one movie in America as we speak.
This week’s marquee release, however, is undoubtedly Christopher Nolan’s Tenet, which was once being touted as the summer blockbuster capable of single-handedly reviving the cinematic experience from the worst year in recent history. Obviously that wasn’t the case, and the $200 million action thriller is now looking to pull in some big numbers...

At one point in the late Nineties, the Blockbuster video rental chain had a ubiquity comparable with other American mega-chains like KFC or Burger King. Today, the company has downsized – it only has one store left in all of the US. The Last Blockbuster, an amiable, breezy documentary directed by Taylor Morden and narrated with enthusiasm by actor Lauren Lapkus, aims to explain how this onetime king of the video rental fell from grace.
Morden knows most will blame Netflix for Blockbuster’s woes, but after considering the question early on in the film, he takes us on a roundabout history, first of the video rental market and then Blockbuster itself, centring on a remaining last-store-standing bastion of the chain still operating in Oregon, where old dusty PCs that require floppy disks are still in use, and its manager, likeable ‘Blockbuster mom’ Sandi Harding, continues to fight the good fight.

Blockbuster Video was recently back in the news after its last remaining outpost in Bend, Oregon began offering movie lovers a chance to spend the night on an air mattress or pull-out couch, surrounded by rows and rows of new releases. The cost was the same as a movie rental — $4 (not accounting for those exorbitant late fees!). The AirBnB promotion went viral, riding a crest of social media interest both from Twitter-users who fondly remember spending weekends picking out movies at their local Blockbuster, as well as from Gen Z members for whom the idea of a “video” is as relevant as a Spanish galleon.

In the age of streaming and VOD, movie fans old enough to remember the era of VHS and DVD rentals are surely filled with warm and fuzzy memories of browsing the aisles of their local Blockbuster Video. While they once numbered over 9,000 locations, there now exists a single Blockbuster store, in Bend, Oregon, which is offering a very special blast from the past in the form of three available overnight stays on Airbnb.
Yes, you can actually have a movie-night sleepover inside an actual Blockbuster, which has created a living room space amid its towering shelves of movies. The decor harkens back to the 1990s peak of the rental chain, with a pull-out couch and pastel-patterned bedspreads and pillows. Guests will be able to play VHS movies on the included 4:3 TV.
Unfortunately, the sleepovers are available only to residents in Bend’s Deschutes County. Beginning on August 17 at 1 p.

Those born after a certain date aren’t likely to understand why The Last Blockbuster trailer is so important to a lot of us since they either don’t remember or just don’t know what it was like to walk the floor of the video store, roaming the shelves to see whatever might catch your eye. "Did you know that Blockbuster had a chance to buy Netflix, but they didn't?" What?! No way! Pop Motion Pictures has debuted an official trailer for an indie documentary called The Last Blockbuster, which is indeed a film about the very last Blockbuster video rental store to ever exist. Many of you might know the Twitter account, @loneblockbuster, which was started as a joke but is also based on the real-life reference - the very last Blockbuster video rental store still in operation, located in Bend, Or. The Last Blockbuster is a feature length documentary film about the rise and fall of Blockbuster video and how one small town store managed to outlast a corporate giant. Kevin Smith is featured prominently, along with Sandi Harding, manager of the last Blockbuster store. I'm most curious to hear what this former CEO has to say about it all. Here's the first official...
