Comeback Baby
j-lacerra21 March 2019
I am a man and have always liked Iliza. I loved her first special, yet found the follow-ups to be a bit disappointing. Here, with Elder Millennial, it seems that Iliza is on the comeback trail. She is an energetic comic, and has voices and schticks that make her unique; here she uses them judiciously. Also, she is a pretty lady, quite easy on the eyes, but always willing to blast that pretty image to smithereens. This show is not constant hilarity. But it is always entertaining.

I was walking into that thinking..uhh feminist humor or whatever it's not for me.

But i had a smile on my face the whole time.

Very funny jokes, amazing stage presence.

The hashtags and stuff that pop up on the screen every few minutes is a little distracting i think i might have OCD i coudn't not look at it when it came on the screen.

There is a few moments who kinda kill the funny vibe a bit, like general empowering lines we heard a million times. She gets all serious sometimes and say stuff like "Remember you are perfect, no means no etc.." not that it's not important to say but it killed a bit of the funny mood for me.

Really breaks the stigma that chicks aren't funny she is hilarious. Intelligent humor not bad jokes for an hour. And yeah it's feminist but she dosen't humiliate men for cheap "Yass queen" moments it's good to laugh at yourself watching this as a dude.

Sounded like most of the audience reaction is really just a laugh-track. If that's the case, why waste the effort to make this a special?

Binging on NetFlix

Binging comedy on NetFlix. Most comedians are boring. Not Iliza. I liked her. Sure, the show starts slowly. She does not have the speed of Jen Kirkman, but she is still good. And her observations are quite obvious, without being the Seinfeld type of socks going in pairs joke.

Funny stuff
lynnopla26 August 2018
I laughed out loud several times and what more could you want? And to everybody talking about 'not being able to relate'; I am female but that doesn't mean I didn't laugh at Bernie Mac talking about giving his girl the D... comedy is funny or not and Iliza is funny.

I can't help but wonder if the low reviews are men
missryd10 August 2018
I mean, I'm an elder millennial white female so I'm sure that's why I can relate so much. I love that she gets real and turns it funny. She's also so animated an not afraid to make fun of herself. If you are against lipstick feminism, this wouldn't be your thing but it's totally mine.

Worth your time

I thought this was an awesome comedy special, made me laugh out loud a ton! Not only are her jokes funny and her timing excellent but she's a good storyteller and the jokes play into each other. I thought she put a nice "real-talk" spin on a lot of her jokes that I can see some people not liking but I really enjoyed it! Hope she comes out with more! Only thing I'd say is they need to tape better audiences, a lot of the time I was distracted by people in the crowd with sour faces or something - kinda put me off but thats nothing she can really control.

This lass is hilarious. If you don't like it you really don't know what stand up is. I've not seen a decent Stand Up comedian on Netflix in a while. Unless we're counting Richard Pryor. Ilizia is hitting that bar he set one many fail to reach. Not only is she reaching it she's doing pull ups on it, limboing underneath it, sleeping on top of it, keeping it polished, tap dancing on it, painting watercolours of it... You get the picture. I wrote this around a third of the way through.

It Feels Like She Peaked...
Kaptain_Bluddflagg25 July 2018
...and that was in Freezing Hot. I really, really wanted to like this special, but it was such a step in the wrong direction that I just couldn't.

A lot of what women go through is horrible and unfair, but a lot of what men go through is as well. I get that this special is from a female perspective, and I was really excited to hear about that from Iliza, but what I got was a lot of weak generalizations which fail to address that things really aren't that great for a lot of men either. Most of her special boils down to this: things are hard for women, and this is the fault of men and society (which translates to also men).

One point that I really take issue with is one that was also made by Whitney Cummings in her spectacularly unfunny special "I'm your Girlfriend" about how men don't want to date successful women, that men only want women who appear vulnerable. I get that they aren't men and that their jokes are about this issue from their perspective, but has it ever occurred to them that maybe the reason that some men aren't interested in them is that the men are tired of feeling judged too? Maybe men have self esteem issues as well?

Women are judged primarily on their appearance, while men are judged on their ability to provide. Iliza makes a joke at one point about how men like to think they are so much more observant than women, but she checked his credit score while he was complaining about his seat not facing the right way. So harsh, unrealistic standards towards women are bad, but men just have to accept them?

I think what bothers me about this is that instead of attacking institutions or ideas which make EVERYONE miserable, Iliza decided to go for cheap approval and laughs by catering to half baked, quasi feminist types. There are larger issues here that I do think she is intelligent and funny enough to tackle, but instead she did her whole hashtag shtick, made some goat noises, and then effectively gave carte blanche to any woman with an ax to grind over her current or past relationships approval for blaming everything on their partner.

Look, if the most interesting thing that you can think of to talk about during your 4th Netflix special is very generic material about dating that sounds way too similar to your old material about the same topic, then maybe it's time to take a critical look at your act and start working on some jokes that have punchlines that the audience can't see coming from the opener. Unless, of course, Iliza actually wants to be known as the umpteenth, barely funny female comic with a poorly articulated feminist bent.

Very rarely have I felt so let down by a performer. I thought Iliza was better than this, maybe I was wrong.

Wonderful
Caglatureray15 September 2018
Super funny & wonderful. If you are aware of how the society really works and how women really behave, you will also love this show!!! I'm a woman and I loved it !!! Her way of stand up , the way she talks is hilarious !! We laughed a lot with my husband. And to me she is no feminist but just a realistic woman who can criticize freely other women. Go girl!!

Loosen up. This lass is pretty funny, both my fiancee and I found her hilarious and resonated with us both. Most of the reviews on here start something like "well, actually", and that's enough to make me disregard whatever else follows it. Glad I did and watched this despite them.

She will make you love stand up!
Blackeyer6 April 2020
This woman has so many funny and smart stories to tell on her show, that makes me want to see it again. I love stand up shows, because they are supposed to bring forth funny, uncomfortable, everyday situations and combine them with clever comments and fun facts. Iliza does all that, as she mixes many of her everyday situations, along with typical average behaviours. More than often, she makes fun of many stereotypes and through her speeches she shows how supportive of the female gender she is. All the above goes for every show of Iliza. Also, she does not do something that many stand up performes consciously do: she does not repeat part of her performance on the next show, so as to gain some time. Every time she tells something new and the laughter is hearty,

Nothing new.
LucyBonette29 July 2018
This was really a one joke show. Men are hunters and don't like independent women. OK. I imagine she's good with oneliners or tweets, but an entire show about old man vs woman stereotypes is a bit much. As a non-American the dating scene as described is a little unrelatable, but I'm sure a lot of Americans don't recognise this either. Her analogies/metaphors can be quite funny, but overall it's just too much of the same.

How to play it safe and conform to what society tells you in a TED talk with some added schtick.
xxxia-5852624 July 2018
None of this is truly funny. Compaired to Amy Wong I just dont know how this type of *Comedy* is going to make any bleeps on the radar. She plays it so safe .It feels dated and done. Where is her personality?...she conforms SO MUCH ! Grow a backbone allready! It's way to superficial to relate to...Should it be a TED talk on relationships?. All I see is good ribs... (And im one year her senior so it should feel relatable) She's relying to much on her previous schtick. Goatsounds and hunchbacks....she does that in all her specials. They are all frikkin the same. Get a life Eliza!

Not to be the one to say it but.....
joaud12 August 2018
Okay so her standup is obviously meant to be feminist and progressive, BUT does anyone else feel like her standup is sexist against women?

I love comedy, I love stand up and this was hard to watch. I am I white female, the exact and only kind of audience this might appeal to.

She says "We have this nasty habit in our society of labeling women very cruel and unfair things when they express their desires for... monogamy, exclusivity, a relationship, a family, and babies". I found that all she did was portray women in a negative light for wanting those very things.

Without getting into specific jokes, because honestly it's every one, she tends to portray women as dependent on men, less than men, only trying to get men to impregnate us, only learns from movies, only valuable because our eggs, psychotic, obsessive, desperate, and she constantly uses some odd monster (?) character to portray women. I find that her portrayal of women directly contradicts the idea of female equality she wants to support. It's not even funny. I support good comedy at the expense of women or men or whatever, but not an hour and a half special degrading us to earn social points for being "progressive".

She relies too much on that weird monster character. It's in all of the specials I've seen of hers and it's so strange to watch, it's a cheap schtick. It was like loud and weird voices equals funny. Also, the hashtags in the bottom right corner were odd, let a joke be a joke. If people want to make a hashtag out of it cool but encouraging that undercut the joke and was tawdry.

I watched this in its entirety and I waited for one joke that wasn't about ALL women.... I was disappointed.

not to be sexist....
stbruins93726 July 2018
She unpacked the same joke ad nauseam. One topic standups dont quite cut it and i wanted to give here a chance but her demographic seemed to be limited to the "you had to be there" girls. I get that shes prob not for me but it would be better as a podcast.

Party Goblin-Not.
Aesafern27 July 2018
Initially, I was intrigued by the idea of an "Elder Millennial". Unfortunately, Iliza's comedy special was more self-deprecating and less enlightening, and nothing about growing up as a millennial. If stand-up comedy is coming on stage to make weird faces and bombard the audience with the 'f-word', then you're in for a treat. Elder Millennial is Iliza's take on dating, feminism, and men, and nothing unlike what we haven't heard before. There's not much else to say except, #unrelatable

Misleading title
RagLagertha28 July 2018
This could have been great if there was actually something about millenial problems or milllenial life questions and more stuff like that in the show. But.....there wasn't....it was just some supposedly fun stuff about dating and a few feminist topics. Okay, maybe change the title of your show then......

I am a guy and to me most female comedians aren't really cutting it. I know women like women standup, so maybe this is catered more to them. Though even they would expect specific millenial issues I guess.

My favorite comedian is Dylan Moran, maybe that helps you to decide if you should watch this. Iliza's jokes in this show are her own and original, but at the same time it s topics and ways of treating them you heard a thousand times before.

If you hope for an funny intelligent approach to millenial issues, look somewhere else.

Maybe I should have given It a 1
Cmkahue29 July 2018
Weirdly I didn't laugh at all. I just can't relate to most of her jokes. There is a very LA quality to her humor and jokes. Unless you live there the jokes almost mean nothing. I'm sorry I bet she could be pretty funny. She is only talking to a small circle of people. I made it about 30 mins in and had to shut it off. I was bored.

Unfunny and Annoying
spizzyjarms1 January 2019
The content didn't seem particularly funny to me, but maybe I just wasn't the target audience. What made it unwatchable was the horrible noises and voices that recurred throughout the special. Is that supposed to be funny? Yikes.

Great at promo bad at comedy
stephannewman-1002112 August 2018
If you have seen her specials before than don't waste your time here. The title of of the special is great, her instagram keeps you engaged but when it comes down to the hype but this special is terrible. The content does not reflect the promotion and she stayed with the content she is familiar with. It felt more like a ted talk with a high school drop out more than anything else, in that sense she is an elder millennial.
