As the film Descendants: The Rise of Red begins, a royal decree is issued, stipulating that Auradon Prep, the elite boarding school for Walt Disney’s classic characters, would welcome a new class of Vk’s — villains’ kids, or the offspring of Disney’s most nefarious antiheroes. Admission letters were sent off with the flourish of a wand and the Descendants franchise began a new journey.
The coming-of-age Descendants films have been tentpoles of the Disney Channel since 2015, when the first Descendants won over children and tweens. The two sequels, Descendants 2: It’s Going Down (2017) and Descendants 3 (2019), did equally well, each becoming the most watched TV movie among ages 6-14 when it premiered. The July release of Rise of Red, the franchise’s fourth installment, has kept the streak going, drawing 6.7 million views in the first three days after its debut on Disney+, making history as the most viewed...

Although there are fewer teen dramas airing these days, there’s still quite a few solid shows to choose from in the YA realm. Unfortunately, the same can’t really be said for the preteen genre — there’s a couple of notable gems like Raven’s Home, but such shows are few and far between. With Netflix canceling The Baby-Sitters Club after just two seasons and former Disney Channel staples like Girl Meets World and Andi Mack being long over, the future of tween TV remains murky at best.

Jennifer Garner and Ed Helms can’t save a lukewarm family comedy that’s over-reliant on potty humor and eye-rolling contrivances
There comes a time, in just about any modern family, when the youngest member of the household is old enough to warrant the commencement of “movie night”. About midway through the pandemic, when our daughter’s tastes graduated from Australian mermaid dramas to more palatable fare like The Baby-Sitters Club and Gilmore Girls, my husband and I celebrated by screening Cary Grant and Alfred Hitchcock films for our kids, who loved them as much as we did! But then the world opened back up, and personal preferences splintered off. Our son now likes watching football games, and football dramas, and while I can stand the latter, it’s hard to imagine subjecting his little sister to Friday Night Lights’ tequila shots and threesomes. Walden Media has preemptively acquired N.K. Jemisin’s bestselling “The Great Cities” duology, “The City We Became” and “The World We Make,” with the intention to develop both books into an ongoing series.
“The City We Became” is set in an alternate version of the world, where major cities like New York City become sentient through human avatars. After the avatar of New York falls into a supernatural coma and vanishes, a group of five new avatars representing New York’s boroughs come together to fight their common enemy and save New York — and, potentially, the world.
The collection marks Jemisin’s first books after her “Broken Earth” Trilogy, which comprised 2015’s “The Fifth Season,” 2016’s “The Obelisk Gate” and 2017’s “The Stone Sky.”
“We couldn’t be more excited to take on N.K. Jemisin’s immersive, diverse and utterly enthralling tale about found family and the aching desire...

Cher Horowitz is back. 28 years after Amy Heckerling’s cult classic “Clueless” premiered, setting the bar for modernized Jane Austen adaptations and inspiring decades of Halloween costumes, Silverstone is set to reprise her role as the sweetly well-intentioned Valley girl — not for a sequel film or one of her TikToks, but rather for a Rakuten spot that will air during the Super Bowl.
The teaser for the commercial opens with a classroom of students chattering amongst themselves. A school bell rings, the iconic yellow plaid emerges into frame and Cher strides down the aisle, holding one shopping bag in each hand. She reaches the front of the classroom and sets them down, then whirls around to face the camera. The opening chords of “Alright” by Supergrass begin to play as she fixes a steady gaze.
“Don’t bug,” she says. “Your girl is back.”

Wednesday Addams is taking the world by storm in a way that, thankfully, doesn't involve putting her twisted mind to work. Were you to ask the macabre teen herself, her version of world domination would probably involve piranhas, communing with the dead, and ridding the world of any color that isn't her signature despairing black. But the reality of her popularity isn't so bleak: It mostly manifests in TikTok dances, Halloween costumes, and some of the funniest fan edits that society has ever seen. Netflix's "Wednesday" is that kind of popular, as you've most likely noticed it trending at the top of the charts for many weeks.

There's no denying it's been a bloodbath both on network and streaming this year.
So many shows had so much potential but failed to pull the viewership numbers to be deemed successful.
With so much content and so many channels and platforms, some shows never even stood a chance.
For some, it was a lack of promotion; for others, there was simply too much competition. Now we are left with threads dangling and no hope of closure!
Let's take a look at some of the year's most unjust cancellations.

Netflix is parting ways with Warrior Nun.
Deadline reported Tuesday afternoon that the cult favorite has been canceled after two seasons.
The second season of the series launched on November 10, but there was a lack of promotion for the series, likely contributing to the lower-than-expected performance.
Netflix had several opportunities to promote the show, including at its Tudum Global Fan Event, but the streaming service elected to let the show slip under the radar.
As a result, Warrior Nun Season 2 spent just three weeks in the streamer's weekly Top 10 for English-language series, with #5 being the peak.
The series also showed up on the Nielsen Streaming Chart for the week of November 7, with 595 million minutes viewed, coming in ahead of The Handmaid's Tale, Andor, and The Watcher for that week.

Could “The Baby-Sitters Club” be making a comeback? The series was canceled by Netflix after two seasons earlier this year in March, and talk has swirled since about the series being shopped for a revival — or at least a TV movie — elsewhere.
But now there’s a bit more momentum for the show: “The Baby-Sitters Club” won two awards at the Children & Family Emmys this weekend, for both outstanding writing for a live action preschool or children’s program and outstanding children’s or family viewing series.

After splitting off from the Daytime Emmys, the first-ever Children’s & Family Emmys ceremony is here.
Taking place at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles on Saturday, Dec. 10, the first night of the festivities focused on the creative arts, with trophies doled out for achievements in writing, directing, voice direction, cinematography, editing and more.
The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences announced the establishment of the Children’s & Family Emmys in late 2021, nodding to recent growth in scope and reach among that programming, which NATAS president and CEO Adam Sharp said could “stand on its own two feet.” Indeed, younger audiences aren’t strictly daytime cable viewers anymore — much of the innovation in children’s and family TV in recent years has happened in streaming. Case in point: Netflix was nominated for more awards than any other platform, beating even Disney+, Disney Channel and Disney Junior combined.

These names range from a former president and Oscar-winning filmmakers to famous actors and popular singers.
Probably the most notable of these nominees are former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama. They are nominated for Best Preschool Series (“Waffles + Mochi”), Fiction Special (“Waffles + Mochi’s Holiday Feast”), Preschool Animated Series and Short Form Program (“We the People”).

“Sam & Kate” is a family affair, which is essentially the entire conceit for the film’s existence. Dustin Hoffman and Sissy Spacek play Bill and Tina, while Jake Hoffman and Schuyler Fisk (Spacek’s daughter with production designer Jack Fisk) play their respective kids, Sam and Kate. It’s the story of young adults and their challenging relationships with their quirky aging parents, fumbling toward a kind of grace in spite of their pasts.
The appeal of the film is its gimmick: watching two legendary actors who defined New Hollywood in the 1970s playing parents to their own children and the unique chemistry that comes from that. It also helps that the kids look a lot like their parents.
But Hoffman and Fisk aren’t carbon copies of their parents, and neither have their careers. Both have been acting since childhood, but Hoffman has gone the indie route, having directed the feature “Asthma,...
