Very odd
octavedoctor-13 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Wow, this is a weird one. Seeing the trailers, I had hopes that this would be something in the mould of Orphan Black, but the two are poles apart in every respect.

Let's start with the dialogue. Others have commented that the acting is bad; I don't think it's that at all. The dilaogue has this strange, stilted quality, like a foreign movie dubbed into English, where the voice artists have attempted to crowbar the rhythms and cadences of English into the unfamilar patterns of German, Italian or Japanese. Except it's actually an English language movie, but the English sounds unnatural. Only a handful of the actors are native English speakers but that alone is insufficient to explain the strange ambience of the dialogue. I think the problem lies in the translation. There is a scene in the opening episode where Nora is greeted by her friend with the words "I'm so glad you're not dead!".

I'm not fluent in German, but it may be that "Ich bin so froh dass du nicht tot bis" sounds perfectly fine in a pragmatic language like German, but in English it sounds odd as we would be more likely to say something like "I'm glad to see you're still with us!" an idiomatic construction that might sound ambiguous directly translated into German. So I think it might have paid for them to have employed a consultant to proof read the translated script and put some of it into correct idiomatic English. I notice that Anna Bullard, who co stars, is also listed as a dialogue coach. Hmm. Probably never a good idea to split roles to save the cost of a specialist consultant. I can't work out if she's an American actress living in Germany or a German actress who speaks fluent American. Go figure...

The plot. I know that there is a necessity for a gradual reveal, but the plot is not just overcomplicated; at times it is bafflingly incomprehensible. Characters waft in and out of the narrative without much of a backstory. I've watched it assiduously from the start, but five episodes in and I still ahve no idea who many of them are, or how they relate to the main narrative. If I can cite Orphan Black in comparison again, this had one actress playing as many as fourteen different versions of herself and yet, despite the complexity of the plot, it never tied itself in the narrative knots that Spides does, and it remained coherent throughout its run.

Spides is hard going. I will persevere with it, but I often find myself wondering why, and if my time would be better spent doing something more entertaining.

If you are a fan of the weird, the chimerical and the nightmarish (it could be argued that the dialogue flaws actually contribute to the surreal feeling of alienation) and aren't particularly critical of the issues that I've raised, then Spides is probably right up your Strasse. I found it a bit meh.

Bleak Berlin
Pairic26 April 2021
Spides: A new drug, Blis, appears on the night club scene in Berlin. Great stuff but has troubling side effects, people go into comas, disappear, seem different afterwards. There are aliens involved, Arachnids, drug dealers, detectives, but the police leadership seems to have been subverted. The narrative moves through much of the seedier side of Berlin, abandoned factories, railway cars. But it also touches on High Tech medical research institutes. Some savage gun fights, stabbings well imagined aliens. There may be a bit too much going on though. Still it's well worth watching. Showrunner/Co-Director/Co-Writer is Rainer Matsutani. On SyFy. 7/10.

Incredible but it caught me

Bad acting, worst script... but it was interesting if you doesn't expect anything. Perfect for this quarantine. A little nice twist on episode 6. Photography is poor. But give it a change.

Looking Forward to More...
timstokes-5573231 March 2020
I've watched the first episode and in fairness there was a pleasantly surreal storyline, a few unpleasant surprises and a few good twists and turns, all good romping fun.

The acting was a fairly level playing field, no-one stood out but no-one was less than professional.

I enjoyed the visuals, actors and story enough to keep me engaged all the way through the episode.

I only watched this programme due to the extreme opposites in terms of reviews and what I feel is an unwarranted rating of 5. thoroughly enjoyed first ep. and cant wait for episode 2 :D

Bad even by SyFy (sub)standards
faveacatena31 March 2020
Spelling the name of some mysterious club drug "Blis" is probably supposed to be cool and edgy, but it mostly tells you everything you need to know about a series that falls more than just an 's' short of quality fare.

Most characters, including lead Nora Berger, come across as one-dimensional, the acting is mediocre at best and British-German Francis Fulton-Smith (Ron Berger) needlessly overdoing a pointless, cringey German accent at worst, and so far, every "surprising" plot twist has been completely predictable.

I've got to hand it to SyFy Germany, though: by producing Spides, they finally made me appreciate how good SyFy US originals really are.

The spide(r)s are coming for you

Warning: Spoilers
It's a cool show. A B movie with typical style of such sci fi horror movies from the 1980s as the Body Snatchers come. That's why I don't mind the simple script or the hilarious acting. Good cast though. I think a lot of it is deliberately kept on B movie level. Finally some bad alien assholes and no political zeitgeist stories. And Berlin is also for Germans a city full of aliens.

Crap
marcel-kariton8 March 2020
Don't waste you time watching this. Poor set pieces, crappy CGI, silly dialogs.

SyFy, please stop wasting money producing crap like this. Better give it to the poor.

Give it a chance
tangerine-7019615 March 2020
Considering SYFY's usual media content the first episode of this series isn't as bad as the previous reviewers are commenting. The first episode is promising.. I will most definitely watch again.

Very Interesting Weird Show
mcintyre6417 June 2021
The opening credits and how its set in Germany reminds me of Dark which is one of my favourite TV shows of all time. It is also a little bit like Fringe. However there is no time travel or alternative universes in this yet. But I can see how i like it based on these two TV shows; there is a lot going on and you want to keep watching to see what happens. Acting may be a little mechanical and not as much depth to some characters that I would like but it looks good and is an interesting weird idea. I hope they do more Seasons and hope it maintains its good level.

Terrible acting and writing
harperchris191612 March 2020
I mean when I say bad, I mean really bad. Camera work, sound, music and budget were all a fail. I think they may have been going for a Stranger Things vibe or something and missed the mark horribly. The brother had to be the worst but everyone was trying their best to win the worst performance award.

Really good mix
minidriver-1854029 June 2020
Sci-fi, aliens, corruption, crime, detective work, European feel, great mix of things. Great characters, surprises, keeps you wondering exactly who or what is behind it all and what their motives are. Really like the two main characters that are the detectives, really work well together ("usual" mix of quite different people). The aliens are something different keeping sort of in the background and you do winder who is who and what's going to happen. Love the German setting, makes it better than if set in the good old USA that you might expect of such a thing. All in all a great take on aliens taking over people (or are they?). So pleased I came across this.

The writers spared me the trouble...
rharley27 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
So, after the not too original opening of people floating in tanks we're introduced to the lead character Nora awaking in hospital. Nora seems to be afflicted with the frowning and looking around suspiciously syndrome! There's a knock on the door and the doctor announces "You have visitors", not "Your parents are here to see you", there then follows one of the most wooden scenes I've ever been treated to in a TV series.

The so called parents, rather than rushing forward to hug their daughter, instead indulge in a little exposition "We were so worried sweetheart" to which Nora replies "Who are you?". Instead of saying something logical like "I'm your mum silly!" we get "You don't recognise us?" then there's a hesitant "It's me...mum" (more frowning and staring by Nora) followed by the man stepping forward and saying "Which would make me your...." at which point he pauses to let little Nora frown out the closing line "...my dad?".

Ugh who writes this stuff?! If that's the way parents greet a child they've been "so worried" about, then human interaction has taken a serious turn for the worse. Thankfully this exchange all takes place within the first five minutes, giving you a clear signal of what to expect in the ensuing 40 minutes and following episodes. Thank you to the writers for setting out your stall so early and sparing me the torture of watching until I fell asleep.

Terrible acting, hard to ignore
dobbstown237 March 2020
I tried giving it a fair shot, but the terribly unconvincing work of many of the actors was just too hard to ignore. Some of the dialog is also poorly written, even for SYFY.

Boring, drawn out, stiff, terribly acted
Reckat1 July 2020
This show was originally written for the German market, and it shows. Stiff English translation, probably from stiff German original screenplays. Everything moves sooo slowly ahead. You watch a whole episode and almost nothing is happening (similar to many german shows made for the German market). It's just boring. Many actors are just doing a bad job. Lot of them can't speak English in a convincing way. And there's not really much that makes it a sci-fi show, not even just as a connection. Throwing in some sci-fiish details doesn't help, especially everything just looks boring and usual too. Sorry, I can't bear to watch this till the end of the season. It's not really different from the average and standard made for german state-financed TV criminal shows or even cheap soap operas. If I wanted to watch those, well, I'd just watch those!

Surprisingly very good
ronbell-2398419 June 2020
I was expecting a normal SyFy channel turkey but this is really good. Some of the low score reviews on here must have been watching a different show. Ok, the CGI is not Hollywood but not many shows are. It's a dark Sci Fi show with a good story and the acting is fine. Give it a go.

The worst Series Ever! Gave me nightmares!
hildajaneflint18 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This is the most Awful series ever written by the influence of a Japanese writer., not surprised, it was rejected by the German producers.

The whole series you are waiting for Nora to stop transforming into the spider and to finally conquer or avoid becoming a monster; her lesbian friend unties her so the spider can take over and consume her, instead of killing the spider, she allowed her friend to die instead. This is a terrible fate because of her friend's stupid decision. The ending was extremely disappointing; they make you watch the film in hope it is going to have a good ending, The writer of this film clearly has an evil mind or is very disturbed! Avoid watching there is no good ending, and a complete waste of energy and time. It is the WORST Series I have ever seen!!!

Matter of taste
tmf-318 March 2020
I think it is always a matter of taste. Spides is different. I like the story. I like the style. I like the settings. The story isn't crazy new, but its a well made serie. Rosabell Laurenti makes a great job, which keeps me to watch on. For me it works out. Love it or leave it.

It's a shame.
Max_Lucas11 August 2020
This might have had a great story to tell. But when you hire a crew that uses "camera shake" as their special effects and bad actors, it ruins a good story. Not all actors were bad, but enough to take away from the story being told.

Should have done better
keith-bonner23 September 2020
I realise this is a German/English-speaking production but that doesn't negate the awful script and poor acting of virtually everyone starring in this. I watched the whole series hoping for improvement as it went on, only to be sadly disappointed

Right step to finally relief Germany from its hibernation
jackreyno28 August 2020
Not much to say. Finally fantastic stories are in the realm of German TV, even this is proof of starting difficulties. One cliche to the next cliche, scene after scene, episode after episode. Boring characters performed by actors who are not allowed to show their talent caused by bad directing. Looking forward for more fantastic stories, but there's room for improvement.
