Slow, but pleasantly easy-going with an amazing character development
Malvenido22 March 2019
I see some people complaining about this series being slow, however, that's the idea: An ordinary guy realizes he can travel through parallel universes but he is neither a scientist nor he's read about time travelling in his whole life. How on earth would he rush on things? Do you want him to have some powers and by changing one thing being a renowned genius? Sorry, but we have a normal skilled adult man this time!

Anyway, after some "trips" you get kind of mad because the MC doesn't seem to learn from his mistakes. Had I been the scriptwriter, I would have increased his IQ a bit .

It's wonderful when a "new" story starts in other universe because we have to pay attention to every single difference and details in situations, things and characters personalities.

I highly recommend you don't watch this show dubbed but subbed. It's much more enjoyable (and totally different) with the original voices.

I've seen plenty of parallel universes and time travel stuff such as The Butterfly Effect, Mr Nobody, Star Trek, Steins;Gate, Life Is Strange (this is a game) and I have to say this is at the same (and sometimes even a higher) level.

Just be patient with the overused and kind of everlasting drama, it'll all make sense and you'll get some single-episode-cliffhangers which you will either hate or love! LOL

Slow buildup but deep, sweet, and suspenseful
Pegafree3 April 2019
It does start out slow, but it is worth it. This is not a glitzy action-packed sci-fi story, though it does have its satisfying time-travel/parallel universe moments. At the end I found myself caring for all the characters and riveted by the events as they unfolded, even as I foresaw a major development before it was revealed.

I started to watch it with the English dubbing, but found it was a much richer experience to watch with the original audio (Catalan) with English subtitles.

Just About Perfect

No too slow, not too fast, CC's were easily readable, actors and director were good, not great, the story deserves an A+ and I absolutely enjoyed the musical score and her singing. I think the score kept the story moving along at a steady pace. This is one of the best efforts I've seen by Netflix and hope you have a bunch more like it up your sleeve.

I fell in love with it. Didn't want it to end.

I created an IMDb account just to write a review about Si No T'Hagués Conegut, or If I Hadn't Met You, if you're watching on Netflix in English.

I always try to find foreign tv shows and movies to watch, maybe because I like to see the difference between directing styles and I love both French and Spanish productions. I stumbled across this show and, by its trailer, I thought it would be just too silly, but decided to give it a try because I'm a sucker for time travel/parallel universe plots and, of course, drama and tragedy.

Yes, it runs a bit slow. I can see how the first episode turned some viewers off, but do not give up! This show is just incredible! It really makes you think about your choices in life and how everything in the future can change because of it. The chemistry between Eduard and Elisa is amazing, even though Andrea Ros is 25 (my age!) and Pablo is in his forties. The sceneries and photography are amazing! Pay attention to how the colours play a big part in each universe. The acting and the costume design really makes you think actors are younger/older in each universe and really give you an idea of past and present.

I did cry a few times, I confess. It's an amazing and epic romance/drama story, with a little sci-fi twist, all without being too cheesy.

Oh, and last advice: watch it with the original audio and English (or whatever language you prefer) subtitles. Catalan is such a beautiful language. It's a mixture of Spanish, French and Portuguese to me and it suits the whole plot so well! It's just not the same without their Catalan nicknames or swear words or songs!

This series will change your life for the better... if you have a heart

Anyone who has lost a loved one in death, or is in a relationship which began in deep love but then cooled off needs to see this series. The character development and various storylines are deep. Caveat Emptor: you will cry during every episode.

A great homage to true love that conquers time, space and death
eleonorahaas13 October 2019
I'm actually not into drama and stories about love at all, so at first I wasn't sure whether I should watch it. But it was also Sci Fi, so I decided to give it a try. And now I'm so happy that I did, because otherwise I would have missed out on a truly great masterpiece! It did start out slow, but at the tenth episode "Universe 0" I found myself crying several times, because I was so touched by how beautifully the story was written. What genius came up with this script? I'm sure this series will remain my all time favorite and I wish more people find out about it!

P.S. I'm surprised there were two ot three negative reviews. These people clearly live in a different universe than I do. A really dull universe that must be.

I love this series...

'If I hadn't met you' has quickly become my favourite TV show at the moment. I love time travel and parallel universe themes and this does the subjects justice. It never falls into clichés and constantly surprises. The overarching theme of grief and regret suits the slow pace wonderfully. Although nothing like it really, it reminds me of The Leftovers, which I think is one off the best TV shows ever made. Anyway I thoroughly recommend IIHMY.. Can't wait for season 2.

World's dumbest time traveller
CyricTheCynic10 December 2020
Technically alternate universes, but still. It's a decent love story but the main character is such a bumbling idiot it takes a lot away from the show. He's constantly messing with timelines and forgetting he can go back any time and losing the travel device. At one point he promises not to interfere and then Immediately does just that. He is also completely oblivious to the twist even though there are dozens of clues from the start. Given all the 10/10 I guess a lot of people can look past it but his idiocy soured the show for me.

Amazing. One of netflix's Best.
gisi_hernandez11 April 2019
This is one show that was so beautifully written that I cried for almost every episode and it made me really appreciate the intimacy between science and love. I wish the score was on Spotify or somewhere radio accessible because the score - and Andrea Ros' voice - was a plot device itself.

Warning: Spoilers
Kind of boring. Mostly because thing seemed to drag on with footage of driving and walking etc that wasn't necessary, and repeats of whole segments leading up to a minor change. I remember what happened before, just show the change and get on with it. I mean if I had to watch that wedding scene, or hear that song, one more time I was going to loose my mind. I saw the "big reveal" coming nearly from the start. The ending was 'eh.' We know why she was there, but what was the point in sending him to alternate realities? should have just allowed him to recover and move on. He just messed up multiple realities for other versions of himself, but it was never going to change anything in his own reality. I guess he realized that he loved his version of Eliza more than any of the others, and he belonged in his own reality, but if he didn't know that going to another reality was even a possibility then he wouldn't have needed to learn that lesson in the first place. The acting was good. It always picked up near the end of each episode and I'd end up watching another, but it still felt more like a chore rather than enjoyment at times. Mostly I wanted to see if it got better, what happened, and if I was right about what happened. But it wasn't a show that captured my attention and held it till the end. I'm not sure I'd recommend it, but I wouldn't say to avoid it.

Never felt more emotions in any tv show before!
StGeorgi12 April 2021
In my opinion, this is a masterpiece of a show! Since the beginning it welcomes you to enter the life of the family. Then when the tragedy occurs, it makes you feel every single emotion as if you are part of the story.

Never felt so involved and never felt so deep emotions from a TV show before. A job great done! Brilliant directing and brilliant play!

Starts off slow, but quickly built up a fantastic story.
vicky-l-sheets27 March 2019
I just finished watching "If I Hadn't Met You" on Netflix. I love my time travel shows. This was a little slow in the beginning, & not a show you can have on for background noise while you work around the house. You need to concentrate. It flip flops between multiple universes and delves into The Theory of Everything. Well worth the watch. 7.5/10

Touching, heartbreaking, breathtaking parallel universes love story
senzapablo15 July 2021
My wife put it in Netflix.... I said wt...a Catalan Tv series about parallel universes travel over a love story?? It started....super low budget clearly, the special effects LAME, but then....something magical happened. The story starts with a heartbreaking accident in which a father loses his wife and his 2 kids.....and from there it intensifies into a frenetic failed travel across universes trying to recover them, or being just one more minute close to them.... It is truly touching, the love story is intense, his pain is well interpreted by the actor. And she, the wife, she is lovable in every single way....you do not want her to die...you want them to be together.

I loved it from beginning to end. All of it.

People putting one star reviews, I can't understand. Probably heartless people.

It is a must watch. Will recommend to every friend I have.

Too long and weepy but still good
asikoracarelse20 October 2020
It's a cross between sf and romance, and way too much of the latter...too many boring romantic scenes. Also, lots of inconsistencies, though these are nicely (sort of) explained by Everest. What's really tragic is hair and makeup. The actors look exactly the same whether they're 20 or 40; in fact the attempt to make them look younger backfires. Still, very interesting premise although done millions of times before. The twist in penultimate episode is pretty much expected since episode one, but it's still a surprise. Why is it rated 18 by Netflix?

Brilliant writing
frederic_thiel24 February 2020
Don't let you the many questions raised by the use of parallel universes haunt you. Everything will be revealed in the last episode and I'll promise your jaw will drop. It's simply the most brilliant scenario I've seen in years!

If you are into Sci-fi shows that involve time travelling or romantic stories, this series might be worth watching.
100-Words-Or-Less-Reviewer29 September 2020
The premise of the first episode offers a lot of potential: Eduard is a man who loses everything and he wants to cope as best as he can with both his sense of guilt and loss, by looking for a Universe where his life or that of his family do not end in a tragedy due to a car accident.

The actors made a remarkable job to make this story believable. They are enjoyable and they gave nothing for granted while interpreting their role. Also the photography deserves a big thumbs up: I paused more than once in order to observe the scene and appreciate how beautiful it was.

However, the main problems of this "Si no t'hagués conegut" concern three aspects: the storytelling, the character development, and the makeup artists. In many episodes, the storytelling is lacking the surprise element, the same scenes are shown over and over again, getting repetitive and in some cases quite boring. While watching each episode, you discover almost nothing new regarding the main character, except the fact that he is amazingly dumb (why?) and extremely unlucky with car accidents in any possible universe. The writer was too focused on the development of the character of the wife, forgetting who mattered the most: the unnecessarily dumb and poor Eduard. The third problem is the poor job done by the makeup artists. Eduard looks too old in the past while his wife looks too young in the present. This was a quick-win and they strongly underestimated the importance of this aspect.

Despite the (big) problems above, I still gave a 7 to this show, mostly thanks to the important effort and work made by the actors.

Intriguing
Otte115 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I was thinking of 4 stars because of plot-line but considering I did finish it then it at least deserve 5.

Storyline is not new, intriguing spin of Butterfly Effect, Repeaters, Ground Hog Day, Happy Death Day, Edge of Tomorrow, Cloud Atlas which is essentially person who lost his family gets to see them again by going back in time to when they were alive and trying different things to prevent the deadly accident. What is different on this series is the time travel is to other parallel universes, so that it never affects his current timeline ever. From this standpoint, this time-travel actually makes more sense then many other movies on this list because you have have that dreaded 'if I went back in time and change something I wouldn't exist in the future to go back in time' loop that dooms every other time traveling movie.

Acting, directing on par, I really liked that they just wigs and make up to show younger selves instead of CGI, little jump in belivablility but adds a layer of unintended humor(45yr old playing the 22yr old previous self) that doesn't distract from story the way CGI does.

My negatives? It can be slow sometimes, this 10 episodes could have easily been done in 5 and would have been a tighter more cohesive story with less fluffing. Top of my list is writing of main character. I understand getting someone who is grief-stricken to want to do this over and over, but the character came off more as mentally developmentally slow rather then grief stricken. It felt like I was a special needs child who found a time machine in backyard and kept going in without learning anything from previous trips. I blame this on being 10 shows because after with so many trips there should have been a learning curve that never happened. Made it hard to empathize with the protagonist.

Not a bad series in any means, and emotional types will get wrapped in in that part of the story and not care about the rest. Others will be bored.

Great love story through time and space
maddawgyolo31 March 2019
Beautiful love story and the music is great music. It's a great escape from the typical Hollywood formulated love story. I've just finished Kurt Seyit ve Sura, and looking for more foreign series. I'm glad I've watched If I Hadn't Met You. The English voice over isn't very good but i'm still grateful, I have to re-watch some of my favourite scene in Catalan (Original Language) with subtitles. The pace is perfect, i don't know why people complain it's slow, it's a TV series, every scene unfold a special moment. I prefer TV series over a movie for this very reason, you get intimate details about the characters.

If I Hadn't Met You
Tweekums28 September 2021
This Catalonian series is centred on Eduard Marina, a man who blames himself for the death of his wife, Elisa, and two children. Unable to deal with the grief he heads to a bridge intending to jump in front of a train. Before he can do so he is approached by Dr Liz Everest who talks him down. She tells him she wants him to help her with an experiment... she has invented a device that allows the wearer to travel between alternate universes. He sees this as an opportunity so save his family in at least one universe. There are complications of course; there is a version of him in each of the universes he goes to and depending when he arrives that version might be a different age.

I enjoyed this series. It was very different to other time-travel/parallel universe stories I've seen; the sci-fi is limited to the device that makes the travel possible; every world is very much like our own and our protagonist is distinctly ordinary. His activity is limited to trying to help alternate versions of his family although emotionally he can't help behaving in ways that seem odd to them. This is a refreshing change. Pablo Derqui does a fine job as Eduard; sometimes playing two different versions of the character in the same scene. The supporting cast is fine too; most obviously Andrea Ros as Elisa and Mercedes Sampietro as Dr Everest. Overall I'd definitely recommend this to anybody looking for something rather different.

These comments are based on watching the series in Catalan with English subtitles.
