In the world of "Mindhunter," the Btk Killer is still free. Dennis Rader, the man whose presence and crimes lurked around the edges of the show's two-season run, wasn't caught until 2005, and the second season of "Mindhunter" ended with a grim reminder of his continued serial murders. You can't really blame David Fincher for leaving his historical crime series open-ended; the show based on the book of the same name by John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker is acclaimed by critics and audiences alike and has frequently been cited as one of the best Netflix originals ever made. It's also pretty darn close to flawless -- creepy and emotional, rich both visually and thematically, and home to some of the most fine-tuned TV performances in recent memory. So why the hell did it never come back for a third season?
The narrative surrounding the end of "Mindhunter" has (like the...

Othello regained the top spot in the industry last week, as the play, starring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal, grossed $3.179 million and saw its average ticket price increase to $382.92.
The production, which is playing at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre, slightly edged out its nearest competitor, Good Night and Good Luck, starring George Clooney. That play brought in $3.135 million, close to $150,000 less than the prior week, but the lowered grosses came during a week that included an entirely comped opening night for the production.
The show opened April 3 at the Winter Garden Theater to mixed to positive reviews, including from The New York Times, which gave it a critic’s pick. Good Night and Good Luck still had the second highest ticket price in the industry last week at $250.68.
Several shows had opening nights last week, including Glengarry Glen Ross, starring Kieran Culkin, Bob Odenkirk and Bill Burr, which opened to mixed to positive reviews,...

As he presented the Mark Twain Prize to Conan O’Brien at the end of a ceremony at the Kennedy Center this evening, David Letterman said to the audience, “I’m not a historian, but I believe that history will show, in history for all time, this will have been the most entertaining gathering of the resistance, ever.”
Letterman was speaking to what was like an act of resistance, given that Donald Trump now controls the Kennedy Center, after ousting the president, firing board members to ensure loyalty and ensuring that he himself would be the chairman of the arts institution.
Throughout the evening, comedians tossed in quips at the situation in their comic roasting and heartfelt tributes to O’Brien.
Stephen Colbert: “This is a very different place. Today they announced two board members, Bashar-al-Assad and Skeletor.”
John Mulaney: “Welcome to the Kennedy Center, or as it will be known next week,...

Donald Trump, now serving as board chair of the Kennedy Center, is well into his overhaul of the cultural institution. On February 7th, he fired dozens of board members, appointed himself to the top role, and dismissed Deborah Rutter from her position as president—a role she held for 11 years. Now, Trump has reportedly begun storyboarding the shows he wants to produce in Washington, D.C.
According to audio of a board meeting meeting obtained by The Washington Post, the 47th president would like the Kennedy Center’s programming to go “slightly more conservative.” He specifically cited, as examples, “non-woke” musicals, such as Cats, Fiddler on the Roof, Phantom of the Opera, and more.
Cats was written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and follows a group of felines (portrayed by cast members as anthropomorphic creatures) as they prepare for the Jellicle Ball, where they decide on a tribe member to leave...

The circumstances of the long-distance relationship between Erin (Katie Aselton) and Charlie (Daveed Diggs) are a little atypical in “Magic Hour,” but director-star Aselton and co-writer Mark Duplass have long been able to cook up tantalizing, high-concept hooks for dramas about mental strain. It seems as if a weekend in Joshua Tree might offer a rare, in-person respite for the couple. But the rendezvous shows they couldn’t be further apart, setting up an even bigger drama at the heart of Aselton’s occasionally frustrating yet considerably daring drama.
Neither Erin or Charlie will mention exactly what’s driven a stake between them after Erin’s longtime friend (Brad Garrett) hands her the keys to his desert abode, and their vague use of “it” can irritate in the time it takes to get to the film’s big reveal. However, “it” certainly has to be big when the two would...

When people decide that they want to start a family, it is often said that it takes a village to make it happen. Luckily, for the Madrigal family from Walt Disney Pictures' global phenomenon "Encanto," there is a small village living in their casita (or "little house" in Spanish) to help each other with anything that may arise. But for those of us who don't live in the Madrigals' idyllic Colombian town, it may be difficult to keep track of each magical member of the family.
In the opening number of the acclaimed animated feature titled "The Family Madrigal," musical juggernaut Lin-Manuel Miranda of "Hamilton" and "Moana" fame did his best to outline the different branches that make up the family tree. No doubt about: The big guns of Broadway’s spring season are arriving fast and furious, and boosting box office figures from receipts to ticket prices. Another newcomer – Good Night, And Good Luck, starring George Clooney, last week became the latest member of the $2 Million Club with just five previews and just weeks after Othello, starring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal, began regularly hitting the rarefied $2 million in weekly receipts.
Also last week Glengarry Glen Ross, headed by Kieran Culkin, Bob Odenkirk and Bill Burr, came very close to the $2M mark with $1,907,467, a house record at the Palace Theatre – and that’s just for seven preview performances; the full eight-performance schedule should push it over the edge. (Opening night is March 31.)
Meanwhile, The Picture of Dorian Gray, starring Succession‘s Sarah Snook in all the roles, pulled in $848,904 for its first six, sold-out previews at the Music Box Theatre.

Updated, with additional details: On his visit to the Kennedy Center this afternoon, the arts institution’s new chairman of the board, President Donald Trump, was asked by a reporter why it was so important for him to spend his time with the venue and on its lineup.
“You have so much on your plate. Why come here today?” the reporter asked.
Trump answered, “This represents a very important part of D.C., and actually our country, and I think it’s important to make sure that our country is good shape and is represented well. When people look at this — I’ve been hearing for a long time that they come here, and they’re disappointed when they come here. We want them to be excited.”

Updated, with comments from press secretary: Donald Trump on Monday will make his first visit to the Kennedy Center since he ousted leadership and ensured that he would be chairman of the D.C. arts institution.
While the center has been beset by cancellations of major shows by artists protesting the Trump takeover, the president told reporters that “we have to straighten it out. It is not a good situation. Like everything else in this country.”
Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said that the president “hopes to restore arts and culture that embrace American tradition, not disparage it, as we have unfortunately seen over the past several years.” She said that Trump would do a tour of the center and would “perhaps be discussing some future plays and musicals and theatrical programs that the center will be hosting under his new leadership.”

Vice President Jd Vance was loudly booed Thursday night as he attended a National Symphony Orchestra performance at the Kennedy Center, which has been taken over by Donald Trump and his allies.
The audience expressed their displeasure as Vance took his seat along with his wife, Usha, according to video shot by Andrew Roth, global affairs correspondent for The Guardian. Vance can be seen smiling and waving as the audience continued their jeers.

Last month, Trump fired the chairman of the Kennedy Center, David Rubenstein, and ousted the president, Deborah Rutter. Trump also ousted Joe Biden’s appointees to the board of the institution. With the board now filled with his allies, Trump then had himself elected chairman, with one of his loyalists, Ric Grenell, serving as president.

Growing up, Dana Ledoux Miller’s mother would take her and her brother to matinees of films like “The Little Mermaid,” “Aladdin” and “Beauty and the Beast.” After, she’d wear out her tapeplayer, listening to and singing along with the soundtracks for the animated classics, imagining she was Belle, Jasmine, Ariel or other Disney princesses.
“It made me want to tell stories,” Miller says.
But she never thought she’d get a chance to play a central role in determining the fate of one of those Disney heroines, which she did as the co-writer and co-director of “Moana 2,” one of the biggest hits of 2024. The sequel, which was co-directed by Jason Hand and David Derrick Jr., is debuting on Disney+ this week after earning more than $1 billion at the global box office. Othello, now in previews at Broadway’s Barrymore Theatre and starring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal had a weekly gross last week of $2,818,297, making the revival the top-grossing (eight performance) play in Broadway history.
The previous record holder was Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, which grossed $2,718,488 for the week ending December 31, 2023.
Othello‘s number also improves on its own previous weekly take, when it took $2,637,158 for its first seven previews for the week ending March 2. The production also carried that week’s top ticket price, by far, at $361.90, more than twice the average price of other big-selling shows. Last week’s average Othello ticket price was $338.09, down a tad from the first week.
Othello, directed by Kenny Leon, opens Sunday, March 23, for a strictly limited engagement through Sunday, June 8 at the Barrymore.

Othello broke the record for highest weekly gross for a Broadway play last week, and was the top-grossing show in the industry for the second week in the row.
The play, starring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal, brought in $2.8 million in its second week of previews and played to 100 percent capacity at the Barrymore Theatre. Ticket prices are high, with an average price of $338.09, which is hundreds above the next highest ticket prices of $158 at Wicked and Hamilton.
Still, the prices are below the highs reached during the prior week, when the show commanded an average ticket price of $361.90. The play, directed by Kenny Leon, is scheduled to open March 23.
Othello again beat out Wicked, which had been the highest grossing show over the past several months. Wicked took the second spot last week, with $2.4 million, followed by Hamilton with $1.7 million, The Lion King with $1.5 million and The Outsiders with $1.3 million.

Producers of Hamilton, including the musical’s creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, have canceled a planned 2026 engagement at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., decrying the “recent purge by the Trump Administration” of the venue’s professional staff and center-produced events.
“Given these recent actions, our show simply cannot, in good conscience, participate and be a part of this new culture that is being imposed on the Kennedy Center,” said producer Jeffrey Seller in a statement. “Therefore, we have cancelled the third engagement of Hamilton at the Kennedy Center, originally scheduled for March 3-April 26, 2026.”
The engagement would have been the third run of Hamilton at the Kennedy Center.
“Hamilton was proudly performed at the Kennedy Center in 2018 during the first Trump administration,” Seller said. “We are not acting against his administration, but against the partisan policies of the Kennedy Center as a result of his recent takeover.”

It was a night of firsts at the 2025 Oscars, with some winners making history and various records being set.
After emceeing the Emmys twice, Conan O'Brien served as the Oscars host for the first time, and he noted several of the historic moments while on the big stage.
By winning the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for Emilia Pérez, Zoe Saldaña became the first American of Dominican descent to prevail. "I am floored by this honor," she stated at the podium. "My grandmother came to this country in 1961. I am a proud child of immigrant parents, with dreams and dignity and hard-working hands. I am the first American of Dominican origin to accept an Academy Award, and I know I will not be the last. I hope!" Saldaña was the frontrunner all season long, having already dominated all of the precursor awards on her road to the Oscars.

The 2025 Academy Awards ceremony has been full of surprises and history-making moments. From Kieran Culkin delivering an all-time great speech after winning Best Supporting Actor for "A Real Pain" to "Flow" becoming the first Lativan movie in Oscars history to win an award, this year's ceremony is one of the most feel-good in recent memory (so far). And those aren't the only moments worth celebrating, as Paul Tazewell became the first-ever Black man to win the Best Costume Designer prize, which he received for his work on the cinematic adaptation of the Broadway musical "Wicked."
Of course, Tazewell's moment has been a long time coming. In 2021, the acclaimed costume designer was nominated for Steven Spielberg's "West Side Story," only for "Cruella" designer Jenny Beavan to take home the trophy at the end of the night. However, Tazewell is no stranger to winning prestigious awards, as he previously earned a...

Paul Tazewell made history on Sunday night as the first Black man to win to an Oscar for costume design.
After hugging presenter Bowen Yang, who was wearing one of his Wicked costumes on stage, Tazewell took a moment to talk about how significant this award is for him.
“Thank you Academy for this very significant honor. I’m the first Black man to receive a costume design award…” he said before being interrupted by a standing ovation from the audience.
If Hollywood is just now recognizing Tazewell, the costume designer has long been a staple of New York theater, launching his Broadway career in 1996 with Bring in ‘Da Noise, Bring in ‘Da Funk and winning a Tony Award for his costume designs for Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton. Caroline, Or Change, The Color Purple, In The Heights, Ain’t Too Proud, and the note-perfect recreations of Michael Jackson’s iconic...

Visionary costume designer Paul Tazewell triumphed on Sunday night, winning his first Academy Award for his nature-inspired “Wicked” wardrobe. He can add his shiny new Oscar to the crowded shelf where he keeps his Tony, his Emmy, his BAFTA, his multiple Costume Designer Guild awards and the many other honors he has won over the years.
Tazewell’s “Wicked” victory makes him the first Black man to win for costume and only the second Black person to do so since Ruth E. Carter‘s 2023 victory for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” which followed her history-making 2019 win for “Black Panther.” The only other Black person to be Oscar-nominated for costume design is Sharen Davis, who earned nods in 2005 for “Ray” and in 2007 for “Dreamgirls.”

Can Paul Tazewell win a Grammy? We’re not sure, but if he does, he’d make history. The acclaimed costume designer won his first Academy Award for his impressive frocks in Jon M. Chu’s “Wicked” at the 2025 Oscars. He already has an Emmy Award for “The Wiz Live!” and a Tony Award for Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “Hamilton.” Perhaps he should consider picking up songwriting.

“Wicked’s” Paul Tazewell has made Oscars history by becoming the first Black man to win for best costume design.
Tazewell, a previous nominee for “West Side Story,” already has an Emmy award (“The Wiz Live”) and Tony award (“Hamilton”) under his belt. He triumphed over fellow costume designers: Arianne Phillips (“A Complete Unknown”), Linda Muir (“Nosferatu”), Lisy Christl (“Conclave”) and Janty Yates and David Crossman (“Gladiator II”).
Tazewell has swept the season scooping up the BAFTA, Critics Choice and Costume Designers Guild awards along the way. He was also named one of Variety’s 10 artisans to watch in costume design, and was honored with the Variety Artisan Award in costume design at the Santa Barbara Film Festival.

This week on CBS’ S.W.A.T., it is high drama (on multiple levels) when a hiking expedition for teammates Zoe Powell and Devin Gamble turns into a showdown with an illegal weed farm they stumble upon, run by a dangerous cartel.
As if that doesn’t promise up enough tension, Powell has been tasked by Hondo with convincing benched Gamble to sign the statement that she needs to in order to return to active duty on S.W.A.T.
