Pokémon can engage in physical contact or fire projectiles (usually elemental in nature), which causes the opposing Pokémon's health bar to deteriorate. Pokémon will cry out and faint when defeated, but there is no emphasis on suffering.

- A bereaved young Pokémon seeks its mother, who is occasionally depicted as a ghost (which may cause distress to very young viewers), however, supernatural and bereavement themes are dealt with restraint and care, and another character compassionately adopts the bereaved Pokémon once the deceased mother peacefully crosses over to the afterlife.
