Unlike many Netflix shows, this show is decent, it isn't filthy and seems to emphasize the importance of family and forgiveness. Overall good acting and writing. Waiting for season 2.

Liked the premise and the actors, but less so the story and characters

That's one family of not-too-bright and easily influenced kids. Why on earth should Maddie be mad at John in the last episode? I don't think this is a spoiler; she's mad at everyone throughout the whole series. Interesting that the 12-year-old is played by a 26-year-old actress. Why they keep falling for Gwen's nonsense is beyond me. I'll probably watch a second season, but only to see if the characters shape up a little. If not, I'll cut my losses and watch something else.
Wardrobe Distracting
sifsand7 March 2019
Amalia Williamson's wardrobe is how many shorts and leggings?? Shes worn the same in first 4 episodes. They should also involve the Aquarium they live in more...who wouldn't want to live in such a unique place...show it off!
Characters OK, Not Realistic

Watchable show. Why does the oldest daughter dress like a hooker?
oogaboogaman8 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Not the worse show on Netflix. Who am I supposed to root for though? The dad seems lost. The oldest daughter dresses like a hooker. (dad doesn't care) The son gets on a bus and goes hours away to see an old girlfriend (dad doesn't care). Oldest daughter's best friend also dresses like a hooker and is a horrible person. (dad doesn't even know who she is even though he's seen her, so doesn't care). Youngest daughter is fainting during spelling bee. (dad isn't there, but finds out about fainting, doesn't care) The sister in law is told not to get back with her cheating ex. (guess what.. she doesn't care!)
Everyone on this show doesn't care! I can go and on.
Dad is the new leader of the Rescue team and the previous leader tells him to go easy on the volunteers. (Does he care? NOPE!)
Now I'm starting to wonder.. Why should I care? lol Nobody on this show does!
Having said that, its watchable family entertainment, without much foul language. Just a bunch of idiots that never listen, and don't care. Let the non caring begin.

So who buys the groceries and cooks supper?
raypowell1 March 2020
I was expecting better from CBC. The last episode was terrible! It was like someone told them to add more stuff or it won't sell.
Overall, it was better than average (aka I've seen far worse). I don't live in the US, so I don't know schools' dress codes, or who's allowed to drive ATV's on public roads!
They are many storyline errors, and little backfill, but the show was passable, given there were 4 directors, 7 writers, 10 producers, 1 bear and 1 penguin but no cats or dogs!
A real cliff hanger...
ronandrei7 March 2019
As in, I want to hang the writers, producers, directors, actors etc. over the side of a cliff until they promise to never work in film or television ever again.
Even the good Baldwin couldn't make this bearable. I did watch all 10 episodes, boredom, something to poke fun at, glutton for punishment but I watched them all.
The daughter dresses like a hooker, her friend is..... what is the deal with her friend? A tramp in training?
The wrestling rivarly? They can't stand each other and then bond over a joint only to be at each other's throats again?
A pet penguin? Seriously? Although the penguin and the bear are the best actors on this show.
Deplorable acting, horrible script, no chemistry between the characters, characters you couldn't pay me to care about.
I know, I know, I've never acted or been in a movie or TV show, at least I wasn't in this wretched dreck.

Ridiculous...
nicckmann10 March 2019
First of all, where is this supposed to be. I realize its filmed in Parry Sound Canada, but at first they say its north of Boston??? What...there is no mention that they moved to Canada.
Second what the heck is he supposed to be? SAR??? What certifications does he have?, EMT, firefighter. paramedic what?, can it be easily switched to wherever?
Wrestling season is a winter sport, yet it looks like a summer all the time.
Why does the oldest daughter look like a 30 year old hooker? Is the only clothes she has is short shorts?
What the hell is with the porcupine hair of Alex Baldwin. I could go on, a hot mess of writing and show research.
A Family Friendy Show- Grade D+
johnh228 March 2019
"Northern Rescue" is family drama about dealing with loss, starting over, and the importance of family.
Worthy themes are presented, but story lines feel tired and cliche. I can not recommend Northern Rescue. If you are looking for a show the whole family can watch, I would recommend "Everwood." You could probably pick up Everwood on DVD used pretty cheap.
"Everwood" is probably the inspiration for Northern Rescue and it was frankly a better show by a fair margin.

Arched eyebrows
jbuck-495-2519272 March 2019
The actors are too old to be playing the characters they portray. W Baldwin' s hair cant stay that black out on the water for long and why would a teenage girl(s) have such arched eyebrows and be in full makeup all the time. I want to like this show but it seems a bit far fetched so far.
Refreshing
sanclan2 March 2019
Most of Netflix original fair is horrible and I stray away from it. This show is refreshing in that it is well acted, well written, and contains many good components. It is about family, life, survivol, redemption, sorrow, happiness, love, conflict, etc. I highly recommend it if you want a good mostly clean show to watch (hard to find from a Netflix original) with good characters and good stories.
Has Great Potential
cpale5 March 2019
The writers are what makes this show not work. The acting is good, the premise is fine, the feel is slick and colorful but OMG, some things are just so wrong.
Charlie baking cakes and dealing with boyfriend while guests are in restaurant - really?
Gwen's character is simply out of control with no redeeming value..
Just too much fluff and I blame the writers
Close to Reality
tinakonkin13 March 2019
As a widower of 5 years this show was very real. I could so relate to the young daughter and her trying to fit in as some of the emotions my own dayghter suffering the loss of a parent. I loved Billy Baldwin's genuine care of a dad. Best show I've seen in a long time. Can't wait for many more seasons. Tina Konkin
American knockoff on 800 words?
smr-5545710 August 2019
Is this a humorless knockoff of the Australian series 800 Words? I understand the positive reviews, but the original was warm and quirky, while this series is cold and a!l too typical. Both series are essentially the same, attractive widower with attractive children pick up and move to a remote location from the big city following the death of wife and mother.
Its Bad bad

Warning: Spoilers
Don't know where to start. It's a very unforgettable story. But the few things I want to point out is:
1. The dad is an a$$ the most of the time. Especially the people he work with.
2. If they want me to believe that the two older siblings are still school age then my whole life is a lie.
3. The acting is as wooden as my bed frame. No one even tries to do any real acting. I'm not expecting oscar worthy performances but dear me I don't know where they got these people.
4. The whole story has been done a million times in the past there is nothing original about it.
5. So the oldest girl's friend get her in trouble by stealing stuff and putting it in HER bag and they end up being caught by the police but lo and behold the next day their just best friends again. No "im so sorry" or anything.
6. The youngest girl can build robots.
I'm at episode 6 at the moment and the only reason I will continue watching is because I have this thing of not stopping something I started.
The aunt is the only one that's kind of ok and the penguin is cute.
Loving it

It's ok but . . .
annmoore27 November 2020
It's an easy watch. The viewer doesn't need to concentrate too much and it's a nice change from some of the 'gritty' dramas out there. I just have two questions - is there absolutely no dress code in the US or Canada for high school students? Maddie dresses like a cheap hooker and Gwen like a slightly more high class one (and they both look at least 10 years older than any high school student I've ever seen). And, are Search and Rescue personnel permitted to arrive on duty looking like they are badly hungover and have slept in their clothes?
Boring and so slow
rbtalex-78-66008014 March 2020
Great series but seriously, use actors who actually are school age and look like high school kids
fhjjzhsnz27 August 2022
Seems like a good series, well written and good actors, but as viewers we're not stupid and if you have actors aged 20 + playing school kids, we are going to notice! This spoilt it for me. I was constantly thinking while watching each episode that it would have been so much better if the age if the actors represented the age of the characters. Its such a shame as as the subject and the screen play is so good. Why do producers do that, when I m sure there must be so many talented children who could play those parts. That was a major issue for mr while watching the series.. Having said that, a lot of viewers will identify with the heartache and problems bereaved patents and children face losing a partner/ parent.
NO to Season 2!
VintageSoul5627 May 2020
I can't even give this stars. I thought that this was going to be a totally different kind of series than it really is. I held off watching it until, as usual, Netflix just doesn't have enough good stuff to watch. Too much drama in each episode. It would have been better if there were only two dramas going on at a time and not like five or six. Well, I just wanted to shake William Baldwin's character for being so out of touch with his family and his co-worker's. He's such a hard a**, I can't believe that he let the oldest daughter walk around looking like a runaway hooker. Really! Oh, and the oldest daughter, she's another one that I wanted to just shake some sense into her. I know she's supposed to be a teenage, but drama queen is more fitting. Her Kardasian wanna be friend, what a piece of work. Geez. The only ones who have their heads screwed on straight is the second in command S&R, Simmons and Albert. Even the aunt, who is the most level headed in the family isn't, really. Letting some sweet talking ex almost win her back. Once a snake, always a snake. Nobody talks to each other which, of course, adds to the drama and that's what the writer's and producers want. I hope that Netflix decides not to renew this series. Skip this trainwreck.
