Perfect

This episode made my eyes water more times than I could count. It's so perfect I can't find the right words for it. This is truly an episode that was worth waiting for. I couldn't imagine bringing the books to screen more perfectly.

Hands down one of the all-time greatest episodes of Outlander!!! Sam, Sophie, Cait, Duncan, John... everyone in the cast just lived and breathed the essence of our beloved characters! The writers brought Diana's written words to the screen like they've never done before! Outstanding costumes, and set brought this beautiful episode to life! Thank you all for such an incredible presentation!

THE BIRDS AND THE BEES
magical-kingdom15 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Incredible. Jamie's expression, emotions, tears of joy. Finally meeting a child of his blood he doesn't have to hide. Adored Jamie & Bree's interaction while bee hunting. Jamie's chosen words, attitude perfect. Crediting Frank for loving, raising another man's child. His sadness letting her go. Happy she returned. Tears in his eyes watching his daughter smile in her sleep. Jamie to Claire "A gift from me to you". Murtagh's presence such a bonus. Claire's shock finding her wedding ring and learning Bonnet raped Brianna. Ian's humor. When it comes to Auntie Claire I've learned not to ask too many questions. Episode captured the pain, fear, intimacy, hate and humor. Fantastic presentation, well written and beautifully filmed. Tough time watching Jamie beat up on Roger, I turned away.

Coming together...
peterlsmith-564-96215931 December 2018
Simply magical how the twists of time and circumstance are woven together in the telling of this wonderful story and come together at times such as in this episode in ways that make the audience feel as if they are there with Jamie & Claire!

Absolutely wonderful!

Warning: Spoilers
I try never to say this, but ... OMG!

What a beautiful episode. Everything was so heartfelt, but the moment Jamie recognized his daughter-knew in his heart that this beautiful young woman standing before him was his own flesh and blood-made me weep. And later, when he told her she was his heart and soul, well if I hadn't already decided years ago that Jamie was the perfect guy, this would have pushed me over the edge.

Claire's moment of motherly chastisement, "Didn't you think to use protection?" was so perfect. Just the thing a mother would say! And Brianna's retort, "I didn't think I needed to pack condoms!" was the perfect daughter's response, with just the right inflection.

And poor, poor Roger. Poor Roger.

As always, I can't wait till next week. I've already watched this episode twice and have decided it's time to binge the entire season-again. Maybe it will make the waiting less painful.

Lovely moments...but...
mtanguay-796355 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This episode, finally, brings us the meeting of Jamie and Brianna and their really sweet blossoming father-daughter relationship. Their moments, and those with Claire and Brianna, are lovely. The episode's quality, however, is undercut by the maddening character of Lizzie who seems to have been planted in this story arc merely to get the wrong idea. Has this character done anything of consequence up to now? No, she is here simply to be at the wrong place at the wrong time, to see (in the previous episode that sets this one up) Roger acting uncharacteristically "handsy" and rough with Brianna so that Lizzie could quickly come to a wrong conclusion in this episode. My wife and I have loved Outlander up to now, and we'll keep watching, but some cheap contrivances have made these last few episodes more frustrating than enthralling.

Caitriona brings it home
adelat-231 December 2018
This was a very important episode this season if for nothing else but just bring the books fans home. The writers gave them everything they wanted and they are happy. But can I just highlight on how the heart and soul of this show Claire ( played brilliantly by Caitriona Balfe) is? If she's not happy, nobody's happy. If she grieves , everybody grieves. She gave us the most important moments of this family and she keeps doing it. Her scenes with Sophie Sletom are pure gold and will be watched long after the book readers move on something else.

a little better than episode 8
gabriel-lichtenstein13 October 2020
Well this time It felt like the writers did a better job, I hope they are preparing us for some very interesting plot twist, it's building momento, but it still doesn't make up for the terrible thing to watch that was episode 8 and how badly scripted it was making me feel like a fool after all these years watching the show. I hope it becomes better as there are still entire seasons ahead.

Fantastic episode
lorrainemch-442257 January 2019
What an absolutely amazing episode.

This is way up there with my favourite episode. When they two meet I was crying so much and it's not even real. How can I be so investred in made up characters 😂?

The acting was top notch - Sophie really held her own in this episode. As was Caitriona - her facial expressions are brilliant. She often needs no words. The character who plays Ian (I forget his name) makes me smile every single moment he is onscreen.

Well done team to the whole cast and team. You have yet to disappoint.

Oh Bree ... !
selketentr6 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The episode was very well done. Considering the wordy books they had to glean the story from. I was delighted to see the reunions between Jamie, Claire and Bree. Bree has an annoying way of not telling the whole story. Her decisions to withhold info causes a lot of bad decisions to be made. She broke up with Roger because he made a decision to keep info from her...and she possesses that same arrogance. Its almost like telling a lie when she allows someone to draw their own conclusion from the scant info she shares. Bree makes the decision as to what is in the best interest of all. She causes a lot of pain and suffering...especially for Roger. And (in the books) Bree causes a rift between Claire and Jaimie by not being forthcoming.

A Perfect Episode
jmansmannstjohnslrev28 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The Birds and The Bees may not be the most memorable episode of the series by any means, but it may be one of the most perfect. It's strange because Season 4, especially the back half is such a mess, but this episode hits all of the right notes, from the emotional reunion of parents and child, the life on the ridge, to Brianna's revelation and Roger's subsequent misfortune. It works so perfectly and the cast, I mean what can you say except that they are absolutely brilliant in the episode. This episode is emblematic of why I think Drums of Autumn was the best book in the Outlander series, because it just tells a beautiful story of a child being united with her parents and getting to know a father that she never knew.

And the episode is so perfectly balanced between Claire, Jaime, Frank (well his memory at least) and Brianna, such that you get to see Brianna's relationship with all of her parents. There's a part of me that actually enjoys Brianna's relationship with Claire the most in this episode. That's not to say that it isn't touching to see Brianna build a relationship with her father (the saddest scene is Jaime contemplating the fact that he will likely lose his daughter again when she returns to the stones), but I think there's often a tendency to have mother-daughter relationships that are strained. We actually saw this when Brianna was first introduced in Season 2. That's why it is so nice to see Brianna confide in her mother as a confidant. Part of the reason Outlander is so good is it's consistency, remember when Claire told Brianna in Season 3 that she was the person who knew Brianna best, you get a payoff when Claire correctly deduces that her daughter is pregnant.

All in all, it's just a great episode that hits all of the right notes without being too overdramatic or drawn out and sets up the conflict for the rest of the season. It is a shame that Season 4 turns out so inconsistent because this episode was a masterpiece.

Exceptional
Rob-O-Cop31 December 2018
I like everyone else loved this episode. This show has come so far since the missteps of the first season. I'd happily watch Jamie read a phone book. Brianna didn't impress last season but this season she's delivered in every scene. There were no convenient awkward plot driving accidents this episode, like Brianna twisting her ankle on arrival in 18th century Scotland so she could meet Jamie's ex. I hope they keep those to a minimum. This episode erased all that. Very very well handled on all levels.

Well written!

Warning: Spoilers
Gave it a nine because my favorite book line was NOT used. When Briana sees her mother for the first time in the past she says "Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!" I wanted that and waited for it. One of the most memorable lines from the book, and I'm disappointed she didn't say it.

Probably the best Outlander episode so far in Season 4. Drama, wonder, family coming together and then sadness. Loved the acting from all of the cast.

Excellent!
jltjr1972-289-41506330 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
What an excellent episode! So far, the best! The only thing I did not like is when Jamie was talking to Claire about him wishing Brianna didn't have to go back to her time. Once again, Claire being the Claire she has been throughout the entire show always meddling in someone else's life. She is completely selfish. Brianna is an adult, a young adult, but still an adult and it's her decision on whether or not she should go back or stay so Claire should mind her own business. There is nothing or no one left for Brianna in the future and the gift that she has can allow her to go back and come back whenever she so wishes. Claire was selfish with Frank as she is with Jamie and now she's doing the same with Brianna. I think that with what poor Jamie has gone thru in his life I think he deserves a life with Brianna and Brianna with him since he can't have one with his son, William. It's a great opportunity for Brianna and Jamie to get to know one another and form a true father and daughter relationship. He is after all her biological father and he does have a right to a say in this so if Claire is sticking her nose in Brianna's life then Jamie has a right to as well. But again, Brianna is an adult and if she so wishes she can decide to stay or leave and it shouldn't be up to either of them. When it comes to Jamie, Claire seems like a possessive controlling individual. She did not like Lord John coming around, if any woman was near Jamie she'd immediately make sure they knew he was taken, or she's always whispering in his ear influencing him to change course to what she wants. For example, he was doing wuite well for himself the last few years until she made her reappearance she then was trying to get him to move out of the brothel where he had a good arrangement with the Madame. She's converted Jamie into a pansy. He's not the same Jamie from when the show first started. He needs another type of woman not Claire.

I've got to say that Claire's character has always rubbed me the wrong way because of the way she is always meddling in other people's lives. Claire, mind your own business! Nobody forced you to stay in the past and nobody kept you from going back to Jamie! You're always giving your 2 cents to everyone else but when it comes to you and what you think you should do you don't care if it affects other people's lives or not! Because you're selfish!

Question: How or why did Jamie not remember what Brianna looked like when he met her from the pictures Claire showed Jamie's back at his print shop?

Another question I have is why did Claire not tell Jamie that Brianna had been with Roger first and then was raped by that other man whom WE know is Stephen Bonnet? I guess that would not have a made a difference since Lizzie was so convinced it was Roger when she was explaining to Jamie about the man she and Young Ian saw on the road. Maybe to avoid all of this what they could've or should've done is have Roger tell Bonnet that he'll agree to leave with him on the Gloriana if he could be allowed to have a moment to just go upstairs and tell Brianna that he'll be leaving. This way Lizzie would've seen Roger interact with Brianna and she would've realized that Roger was not the man who had raped her. I just think they're just making it too long and it's so annoying and frustrating to have to wait a whole week to see the next episode. But I guess, that's what makes it a great and entertaining show.

For the horrible Brianna, this episode deserved a zero rate.
jabandrade15 May 2020
Frankly, it had been a while since I got as angry with a character as I did with this Brianna. Jesus F *** Christ! How is it possible for a character to be so poorly developed? And actress Sofie Skelton, with the charisma of an inflatable doll, helps even less. Stupid decisions, incomplete dialogues that always make room for more confusion and idiocy and the worst results. Poor Roger suffers the devil because of her emotional instability. And as this takes over almost all episodes 9 and 10, there is almost nothing more to talk about. Only that it is simply unbearable to put up with the troubled and confused character Brianna. It would give a 1.0 rate, because it's not possible to give zero. But I give 6.0 for the effort of the rest of the cast.

Comparison of the book and show
amanda_parsons11 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I really loved this episode. We got to see Bree and Jamie unite and also the mix up with Roger. We got the scene with Bree and her mom, but she doesn't keep the ring as long. She does make Claire promise not to tell Jamie. Some of the sequences are a bit out of order, but they captured the book well.

Sophie always reminds me of a British Kristen Stewart with the same amount of talent Kristen brings to Twilight. For that, none of the scenes with Bree are ever as rewarding as they are in the book. I feel like it is made up with our new scenes with Murtagh.

I cried more in this episode mainly due to how Caitriona reacts to seeing Claire's daughter in the past and the news of the rape. Overall, well done.

Roger worst nightmare
anagalilea2 January 2019
I dont like the character nor the actor -looks clumsy and lost in translation- professors are way cleverer. He is not even goodlooking. On top of that, he has to interpret a character that has bad luck and steps on the wrong place each time. Really spoiled the fun of the episode
