The fact that there was going to be a Blade reboot as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe came as a huge surprise when the announcement was made at the San Diego Comic-Con back in July of 2019 – but all these years later, we’re still waiting on the film to make its way into production. In fact, with Bob Iger recently announcing that the studio was cutting back (even more) on Marvel stuff, Blade’s future seems in limbo. So, here’s Everything We Know About Blade.
Mahershala Ali
The Blade character was previously played by Wesley Snipes in three feature films and by Sticky Fingaz in a short-lived television series. This time around, he’s going to be played by Mahershala Ali, who was already attached to the project when it was announced in 2019… and while there was no indication online that Ali has been interested in playing Blade,...

Since Maya Erskine burst onto our televisions in 2019 as a 31-year-old actress playing the socially inept 13-year-old Maya Ishii-Peters on Hulu’s “Pen15” (she also co-created the raucous show), her comedic path seemed a clear one. But then earlier this year, she switched it up with the very adult role of intrepid spy Jane Smith, whose cover is to be married for better or for worse to fellow spy John Smith (Donald Glover) in Amazon Prime Video’s action-drama “Mr. and Mrs. Smith.” Some may call the genre swap a 180-turn, but Erskine doesn’t see the leap as gargantuan.
“Shows like ‘The Sopranos,’ to me, have some of the funniest shit I’ve ever seen but are also really dark and dramatic,” she says. “To me, that’s life. I feel like you can’t have one without the other. There has to be a balance.”

“The primary thing when I talked to Donald Glover at the start of this was, he said that the show is about trust,” reveals”Mr. and Mrs. Smith” composer David Fleming. For our recent webchat he adds, “trusting your professional partner, trusting your romantic partner; it really was trying to tell those two stories, of their relationship as spies and their blossoming romance as one story and the music had to serve both purposes.” We talked with Fleming as part of Gold Derby’s special “Meet the Experts” Q&a event with 2024 awards contenders. Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie‘s 2005 hit movie has finally been adapted into a TV show after several stop-start attempts. Created by Donald Glover and his “Atlanta” colleague Francesca Sloane, the series follows two secret agents who go undercover as a married couple in order to complete missions for a mysterious organization.
Glover stars as one half of the duo while “Pen15” star/creator Maya Erskine features as the other. Glover is reliably excellent as John Smith but it’s Erskine, as Jane Smith, who steals the show, as noted by critics.
Kristen Baldwin (Entertainment Weekly) stated: “Erskine — so wonderfully, uninhibitedly awkward in ‘PEN15’ — brings a riveting stillness to Jane. Her character’s inscrutable mien keeps John and the audience a little off-balance, though Erskine reveals glimmers of emotional desolation in Jane’s steady gaze.”
Aaron Pruner (The Wrap) observed: “Erskine, who many will recognize as the brace-faced 13-year old in Hulu comedy “PEN15,...

There are dream jobs, and then there are dream jobs. Acting seems like one of the more potentially fun dreams, especially when someone gets cast in a major franchise. Who among us hasn't imagined getting to be a part of "Star Wars," "Star Trek," the Marvel Cinematic Universe, or whatever movie or television series makes our hearts beat faster? Talk about living the dream. Heck, sometimes those dreams can even be shared, with friends or family members getting to live vicariously through the actor. In the case of actor Maya Erskine, who recently starred as one half of the spy duo "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" on Prime, one particularly intense "Star Wars" fan in her family even (jokingly) threatened to disown her if she didn't take a role on the Disney+ series "Obi-Wan Kenobi."

Yes, like Paul Walter-Hauser and John Malkovich before her, there's no word on who the actress will play in the MCU. Regardless, this is a huge get for Marvel Studios and, while there's no official word on Lyonne's role, we'd love to hear your suggestions in the comments section.

Throughout the early 2000s, the rock ‘n’ roll film festival “Don’t Knock the Rock” was one of the highlights of any L.A.-based cinephile’s year, an impeccably assembled program of movies, live performances, and panels celebrating the intersection between rock ‘n’ roll and cinema. Created by writer-director Allison Anders and music supervisor Tiffany Anders, “Don’t Knock the Rock” was beloved for its determination to showcase difficult-to-see music documentaries and for the breadth and depth of its programming.
The festival last graced L.A. screens in 2016, but now it’s returning to Hollywood via the American Cinematheque with a line-up that’s one of the best ever. From May 23-27, “Don’t Knock the Rock” will screen an eclectic mix of documentaries, music-themed narrative films, and essential retrospective programs at the Cinematheque’s Los Feliz venue, with an added virtual component that will stream from May 23-July 31. Amazon Prime Video’s “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” is taking this Emmy race seriously.
With stars Donald Glover and Maya Erskine leading the charge, “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” which draws inspiration from the 2005 movie featuring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, is set to compete in the drama categories at this year’s awards ceremony.
Crafted by Glover and Francesca Sloane, the show’s debut season stretches across eight episodes, centering on John and Jane Smith, secret agents who pose as a married couple while working for a shadowy corporation. Its blend of comedy and drama offered the potential to categorize it in either genre for awards consideration.

When Mr. & Mrs. Smith was announced as a TV series for Prime Video in 2021, there were plenty of reasons to be skeptical about the project.
It was based on a movie of the same name that did reasonably well but isn't especially well-remembered.
The announced starring duo of Donald Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge was intriguing, especially considering that both performers were credited as creators.
Both had a history of starring in and creating successful series, including Glover with Atlanta and Waller-Bridge with Fleabag. Plus, Waller-Bridge served as the showrunner in the first season of Killing Eve, another prestige series about an assassin.
But then Waller-Bridge dropped out of the project just a few months after it was announced due to "creative differences," with Maya Erskine replacing her as the show's female lead. Glover and Francesca Sloane are credited as the co-creators.

Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender has massive shoes to fill with its live-action adaptation of the beloved animated series, and the same is true for the actors tasked with bringing the show’s characters to life. It’s a twist both title characters of the new Amazon Prime Video series “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” might love. In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” co-creator, writer, director, and star Donald Glover invoked the end of a marriage to describe his creative split from one-time “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” co-star Phoebe Waller-Bridge – months after Waller-Bridge similarly compared the dissolution of their relationship to a failed romantic union.
“It’s a divorce in a weird way,” Glover said. “You’re like, ‘Oh shit, this should have worked.’ And this is just me, being honest, but I think a good relationship is one where you don’t waver from the extremely uncomfortable. And I don’t know if we were ever going to get to a place where we could be completely brutal to each other.”

When Donald Glover was first approached about the possibility of remaking Mr. & Mrs. Smith, he wasn’t exactly enthused.
“I don’t really do remakes,” he told his buddy, an exec at New Regency, which produced the 2005 original starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie as married spies. Of course, he’d never actually seen the film, just the tabloid saga surrounding its stars, who’d later wed. In fact, Glover’s still convinced that was key to the project’s appeal. “When people are like, ‘I love this movie,’ I’m like, ‘What did you like?’ Not to say that the movie’s necessarily bad,” he says, “but I think it just had to do with the chemistry and what was happening between them.”
Donald Glover and Maya Erskine were photographed Jan. 29 at the Georgia Room in New York City.
Glover did eventually watch Mr. & Mrs. Smith, mostly out of curiosity.

Tim Robinson, the comedian behind sketch series I Think You Should Leave, is starring in Friendship, along with Paul Rudd and Kate Mara. The indie comedy is marking the feature directorial debut of Andrew DeYoung, the helmer known for his work on such series as Our Flag Means Death and PEN15.
J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules, the producing duo behind horror hit Barbarian, are producing the comedy, which is now in production, with Fifth Season, the financier-distribution-production outfit behind recent movies Flora and Son and 80 for Brady. Fifth Season, formerly named Endeavor Content, is also financing.
Written by DeYoung, Friendship centers on a mild-mannered man named Craig, whose life is perfectly balanced, with Subway sandwiches and Marvel movies, a job he enjoys and a happy home life with a wife and son.
Tim Robinson (I Think You Should Leave), Paul Rudd (Only Murders in the Building) and Kate Mara (Class of ’09) have been set to star in Friendship, a new comedy from Fifth Season and BoulderLight Pictures.
Pic centers on Craig Waterman (Robinson), who enjoys his life. He likes New Balance shoes, Subway sandwiches, and Marvel movies. He lives in the suburbs with his wife, Tami, and son, Steven. He’s happy to work at Universal Digital, a company that helps brands make their products more habit-forming. Craig sees no reason to change anything or make new friends… until weatherman Brian moves into the neighborhood. Mysterious yet friendly, macho but vulnerable, Brian (Rudd) transforms everything for Craig, but Craig’s obsessive and childlike nature threatens to ruin the friendship, and possibly everything else in his life.
Friendship is the first feature from director Andrew DeYoung, who also penned the script and is exec producing alongside Tracy Rosenblum.

Donald Glover is the new Brad Pitt, at least when it comes to Prime Video’s eight-episode “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” series. Glover stars in and co-created the reimagining of Pitt’s 2005 action-comedy, which famously paired the A-list actor with Angelina Jolie.
“I’m not a big fan of remakes, so this was kind of a big deal to kind of take it on,” Glover told Entertainment Tonight at the show’s premiere. “Once I saw the original, I was like, ‘This is a good date movie.’ And I was like, ‘Maybe I could make a good date show out of it?’ Like, you know, something me and my wife could watch together.”
Glover confirmed that he “reached out to Brad” when he was first getting ready to take on their shared role of John Smith, but the Oscar winner did not have much wisdom to impart.

After more than five years, Netflix's long-awaited reimagining of "Avatar: The Last Airbender" is finally coming to fruition in February. The live-action series will take the beloved Nickelodeon animated show and attempt to bring it to life in a new medium for a new generation. Or, presumably, the same generation of fans that loved the original and who are hoping to capture that same magic. While the final verdict has yet to be determined, Netflix used every tool at its disposal to bring the airbenders, earthbenders, waterbenders, and firebenders to life. That included borrowing a few tricks learned from another one of the streamer's big hit shows, "Stranger Things."
Entertainment Weekly recently published a comprehensive preview of the live-action "Avatar: The Last Airbender" series. In speaking about bringing the firebending abilities to life, it was explained that "Stranger Things" season 4 had a direct influence on that front. The same...

Amazon just released the trailer for its latest series, ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’, and it’s definitely something to talk about. The show is set to premiere on February 2, 2024, and it’s not just any ordinary remake. It’s a new take on the 2005 film, and it’s got a lot of people excited.
Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane are the creative forces behind the series. You might know them from ‘Atlanta’. They’re serving as co-creators and executive producers here. Glover also stars in the show as John Smith, with Maya Erskine from ‘PEN15’ as Jane Smith.
The show is about two strangers who get jobs at a mysterious spy agency. They’re promised an exciting life of espionage, lots of travel, and even a dream home in Manhattan. But there’s a twist. They have to pretend to be married. As they start working together, their fake marriage starts to feel real.

It's been nearly 20 years since Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie lit up the screen as John and Jane Smith, a longtime couple whose love life has lost its fizzle when they discover they're both secretly spies/assassins from rival agencies that have been tasked with killing the other. Wisely, rather than trying to bottle sexy lightning twice, the creatives behind the upcoming "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" TV show have opted for an entirely different approach to the original.
Developed by Francesca Sloane and Donald Glover, the "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" series was initially set to reunite Glover with his "Solo: A Star Wars Story" co-star Phoebe Waller-Bridge before creative differences led to the latter departing the project (but with the "Atlanta" and "Fleabag" creators still on friendly terms). However, as enticing -- and hot -- as the Glover-Waller-Bridge pairing read on paper, the show has found what appears to be...

After just two seasons, the Courteney Cox-starring horror series “Shining Vale” has been given the axe by Starz, and that’s not even the worst news about the show this afternoon.
Variety reports, “The Season 2 finale of the horror comedy, produced by Warner Bros. TV, aired on December 1. Not only will the show be cut by the network, the first two seasons will be removed from the streaming service at the end of the year.”
“Shining Vale” Season 2 premiered on the Starz streaming service on October 13, 2023, and Variety notes that the show didn’t find enough of an audience to justify a third season.
The bigger issue here, however, is the news that both seasons of “Shining Vale” will be removed from the Starz streaming service. The series has to date not received a single physical media release, so this could be another case of a streaming project being...

When Guillermo del Toro accepted the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature ("Pinocchio") in 2022, he proclaimed during his speech, "Animation is cinema. Animation is not a genre. Animation is ready to be taken to the next step, we are all ready for it." Well, 2023 certainly heard him, because this year we were gifted an embarrassment of riches — all using the animated medium to push the limits of storytelling and visual artistry. At the same time, animated projects are constantly under attack by powerful millionaires in positions of power who can't or refuse to see the value in animation and instead still operate under the false assumption that it's nothing more than "kid's stuff." And even still, there was plenty of incredible animation this year specifically targeting young audiences, like the "Craig of the Creek" prequel film "Craig Before the Creek," Apple TV+'s "The Snoopy Show," and of course, the undisputed children's champion,...

Doug Liman's 2005 movie "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" had a killer premise: What if the two of the hottest people in the world were seemingly living a mundane married life, but neither knew the other was secretly a spy? And what would happen if they were eventually tasked with killing each other? When a TV adaptation was announced, originally meant to star Donald Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge, it was easy to picture those actors slotting into the archetypes from Liman's film. You could picture a simple version of what that show would look like. And it might have been pleasant, given the inherent charisma of both of those actors.
But thankfully, as the first trailer shows, this show isn't interested in being a beat for beat remake of the film. Similar to the way series like "Fargo," "Westworld," and "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" took inspiration from their cinematic forebears and...

When news first broke that a "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" reboot would be coming to Prime Video, fans of the 2005 action romance flick were understandably skeptical. Do we really need a new version of this married spy story? Could any other version live up to the steaminess of the original, with its pretty A-list stars, snappy plot, and real-life love story unfolding behind the scenes?
As we learn more about the new "Mr. and Mrs. Smith," it turns out we needn't be worried: this version clearly isn't aiming to reboot the original. Billed as a "reimagining," the new saga is poised to make a lot of key changes to the familiar premise, stretching the plot to fit a TV show and rewriting the spies as newlyweds in an arranged marriage who are aware of one another's secret agent status from the start. The new "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" may not...

Set in 17th-century Edo-period Japan, the new Netflix series "Blue Eye Samurai" follows Mizu (voiced by "Pen15" star Maya Erskine), a mixed-race master of the sword who lives a life in disguise seeking to deliver revenge. "It's an Edo-period tale of revenge — Kill Bill meets Yentl," co-creator Amber Noizumi told Tudum. During this time period, borders to Japan were closed to other countries, with the exception of illegal trade. Knowing that there were only four white men in Japan at the time of her conception, Mizu decides to track them down and kill them in the hopes of enacting revenge against the man who made her a "creature of shame." Her quest requires her to hide not just her blue eyes but also her gender, because as is narrated in the series' trailer, "Under the law, revenge is a luxury for men. Women must be practical."

What's better than dressing up in your own Halloween costume? Having someone else to match you, of course. While coordinating couples' costumes are popular for spooky season, we also love duo Halloween costumes for non-couple parties of two, and thanks to pop culture's biggest onscreen hits, there's plenty of inspiration out there for two-person costume ideas.
For Halloween this year, we have you and your best friend, sibling, or roommate covered with the best costumes that channel iconic duos from movies and TV shows. Maybe you're both obsessed with famous pairs from the '90s like Will Smith and Carlton Banks from "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" or Cher and Dionne from "Clueless." Or perhaps you're fans of more recent onscreen besties like Anna and Maya from "Pen15" or Rue and Jules from "Euphoria." Whatever your preference, our collection of two-person Halloween costumes has something for everyone, and most options...

We finally have our first look at Amazon Prime Video's "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" reboot. On Sept. 14, Prime Video shared the first image from the series, which stars Donald Glover and Maya Erskine. The streamer also announced that the show, based on the film starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, will premiere in 2024.
Way back in February 2021, Glover announced he was teaming up with Phoebe Waller-Bridge for the series, but that September, Variety reported that the "Fleabag" star had exited the series. Glover revealed that Erskine would be joining him on the show in an April 2022 piece for Interview magazine.
Glover (who was interviewing himself) asked, "What happened with Phoebe Waller-Bridge? She was supposed to be on 'Smith,' right?" To which he replied, "Yeah. But classic creative differences." He then confirmed that the new Mrs. Smith is Erskine, who's known for starring in and co-creating Hulu's "PEN15." "She's dope,...

The Prime Video series “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” has been delayed from a November release to early 2024, the streamer announced Thursday.
Reimagining the 2005 Doug Liman-directed film that starred Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, the series stars “Atlanta” star Donald Glover as John Smith and “PEN15” actress Maya Erskine as Jane Smith. Like the New Regency movie, the series will center on a married couple who are also spies, though it’s said to have a different tone than its predecessor which was an action-comedy-rom-com of sorts.
The official logline is as follows: “Meet the Smiths: Two strangers, John and Jane, who have given up their identities to be thrown together as partners — in espionage and in marriage. Matched by a mysterious agency, each episode follows them on a new mission and new milestone in their relationship. When the cracks begin to show through, they must fight to stay together.

Whenever she finds herself in a room surrounded by TV’s biggest stars, Rhea Seehorn is always looking for Bob Odenkirk. “He’s my partner in crime,” the Better Call Saul star says of her co-star. This awards season will likely be no different, as Seehorn, Odenkirk and the AMC series are all nominated once again for Emmy Awards.
For the second year in a row, Seehorn scored a nom for her performance as Kim Wexler, a role she’s played over six seasons and seven years. But this time marks Seehorn’s last outing as the character, as the series closed with its final season in August 2022.
Coming off last year’s nomination, Seehorn isn’t any less excited for the mayhem to come — eventually, as the ceremony itself has been pushed to Jan. 15, 2024: “I am an eternally not-jaded person,” she says, adding that she intends to deploy...
